I am very voyeuristic and love this thread. I only tracked digits for myself.

2007 - 4 digits
Started working making $50k
2010 - 6 digits
Got married making $150k combined
2018 - 7 digits
Sold California home at ridiculous gains and moved east to LCOLA and changed to single income making $100k

We live a mustacian, rice and beans, beans and rice lifestyle.

I've got a good one for you. 2 physician household, private med school. We're pretty thrifty and have a 50% gross income savings and debt payment rate even in residency. Includes projected future savings / loans.

What is your Year 2018 networth change?

Post by revhappy » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:20 am

[Thread merged into here, see below (next page). --admin LadyGeek]

I am closing my books for the month and the year.

All figures in '000 SGD

Image

So down 5% for the year on the overall portfolio. 42k loss. Salary savings were 8% so net, my networth went up by about 3%. It is a bad year for me compared to past 2 years, when I managed good returns with low allocation to equties and this year it was bad timing of moving my allocation in equities from 30% to 50%, in the early part of the year. But on the bright side, now I have achieved my target equity allocation so going forward, I just have to maintain it.

How are you guys doing?

I'm down about 2.75%. Would have been worse if not for home equity growth and investing 102K more.

Wow, you're really bond heavy relative to most people on this forum.

I'm down about 7%, but I'm 60% in equities. :moneybag

Down 15%, very heavy in equities for my age and put a lot of cash in new taxable account right before the big market crash (Bad timing).

On the positive side, great year for me to TLH. :beer

Was planing to change AA to more bonds and then market went down so hit hard. Expensive lesson for me to learn about my risk tolerance and AA.

I am in for the long term so hope for better 20 years to come and fewer like 2018.

Will be looking to change AA as soon as it is reasonable but need to buy less bonds now.

Wish the best investing year to everyone in 2019!

Almost exactly flat. Less than 1% change.

Approx loss of 3-4% of total NW offset by additional savings.

It was my best year ever in business, so I was able to set aside substantial monies this year. In addition, two of my rental properties appreciated far more than normal. Paper net worth increased by more than 4X.

NW is up 19.3% according to Personal Capital. Doubt I can keep this going indefinitely bet we'll see :)

Equities portion was just about flat. Other investments saved me.

Net worth increase 5% / 180k thanks to savings (we also sold a rental property at a profit).

Investment performance was -3.5%, fairly conservative AA.

Net worth for 2018 increased by 9%.

Second lowest yearly gain since I have been tracking since 2011 (yeah, yeah, the good years :).

This is better than anticipated, especially with "paper losses" of nearly $44K in the last 3 months. Our loss in October was slightly higher than in December.

Now that I am "all in" as a Boglehead, didn't have a single twinge of fear, doubt or panic. Just need to keep shoveling money into those boring index funds.

Well lets see...

First off you are not discussing net worth. You are discussing the value of your investment portfolio. Your "net worth" includes everything else - value of real assets, vehicles, personal possessions, other accounts such as short term savings, checking, cash... minus any debts.

Second... including the table seems like a humble brag. you could have made the point just stating this years percentage.

But if you want I will play. My change in net worth this year is about +3%. Investment portfolio was basically flat YoY (with inflows equaling investment losses), house appreciated a few percent, I paid down some debt and build up short term cash (preparing for a house move).

With 25% stocks, my savings investment performance in 2018 is down -1.18% to date. However, because of much increased medical and dental expenses, my investment savings total (not my total net worth) is down -4.70%

Just finished the accounting for the year.

Portfolio ROI: -6.5% (standard 70/30 portfolio with 40% INTL, plus 10% REITS and SCV tilts)
Net Worth change: +45% (finally a significant portion of a former employer's stocks became liquid, so I sold it and started counting it against my NW)

Portfolio down about 6% @ 60/40. Primary residence up 11% in a VHCOL area. To answer OP's question am up about 5% overall but all it really represents is a number on a net worth statement.

Net worth up slightly from 2017 to 2018, ROI down about 4.4% with a 60/40 stock/bond split.

Isn't it a little early to close your books for 2018?

Monday is 12/31 and the market is open with a normal closing time (NYSE and NASDAQ).

With current market volatility you could gain or lose 100 basis points.

A lot of that can be driven by contributions from excess earnings from your career. Our CAGR for net worth since 2011 (when I started to get smarter on finances) is just under 17%. Certainly the bear market helps but about half the contribution is also contributions.

My networth is my portfolio. I don't own a house, we rent and in Singapore cars are too expensive so as an expat here most of us don't own cars, so my apart from my portfolio, there isn't much else of monetary value except my wife's jewelry, which I don't like to include in such calculations.

I like how I track my portfolio, it is like a company's balance sheet isn't it? Except that I have only assets, no liabilities, Sorry for the bragging :)

According to Mint, Jan 2018 - Dec 2018, net worth increased $300K and was primarily driven by real estate equity.

Year isn't over yet. Overall my investments (which don't include our homes), is down 2.06% YTD through yesterday.

So far through the year, net worth is down 1.6%. My investment portfolio is down 6.7%; this was offset by reduction in debt primarily.

Rebalance and make sure your assumptions about future rates of return are reasonable. We do occasionally get people posting that they want a real rate of return above 2-3% (sometimes much higher).

A couple things:
1) Have you looked at the Excel XIRR (internal rate of return) function? It's a useful tool for this analysis
2) Also may want to add in real return (adjusted for inflation)

I looked at this yesterday morning and was humbled to see that our portfolio only went up $2k despite putting $30k of new money into savings. Of course, last year we were up $98k after putting away the same $30k, which was stunning. Looking at it that way, up $100k after saving $60k over two years, I can't complain. Valuations are now more reasonable just in time for a decent pay raise this year.

Increased NW a little more than 3X, but a major portion of that was an inheritance. Backing out the inheritance, increased NW by just shy of six figures, which was a goal for 2018. Almost increased as much as last year, but December brought me a bit below 2017 increase. All in all, quite the change in our financial picture in one year.

I didn't do it because I posted the percentage change in my liquid portfolio not my net worth. I do agree real estate holdings are part of one's net worth, but I only have my residence and I just reflect it at purchase price in my net worth calculations instead of marking it to market so I would not accurately reflect it's value if I included it. Also, unlike a blogger I do not have to try to create an aura of success so people will read my blog and advertisers will pay me for that traffic.

Difficult for me to calculate precisely but up to this point my 2018 ROI is about -5.8 %. Portfolio around 50/15/35 dom equities/int equities/bonds.

Net worth down about 4.9%.

As others have mentioned, still one trading day to go!

My networth went up 125% but that's because I am in the early stages of accumulating (85k to 191k). This was all due to aggresive saving / contributions. My actual 2018 return is -10% and I'm down about 30k from the September high.

Roughly flat for the year. Bought a new car which reduced my investments, offset by new contributions and the general market decline.

I have avoided looking and calculating. We are most likely flat nw if I am generous in the house prices which went up. We paid down a decent amount of debt but I don't think it was enough to balance out the losses.

I was so looking forward to clearing 500k nw but may be next year

Just finished the accounting for the year.

Portfolio ROI: -6.5% (standard 70/30 portfolio with 40% INTL, plus 10% REITS and SCV tilts)
Net Worth change: +45% (finally a significant portion of a former employer's stocks became liquid, so I sold it and started counting it against my NW)
I just want to point this post out for those that dislike rentals so much, as I think it's a fairly accurate snap shot of what most people got from the market. Not only did the value of my rentals not go down (definite up though I am generally very conservative in calc) the positive cash flow (let's say dividends) is way up this year (rents keep sky ticketing here) since moving new people in in June I up 400/mos. Definite only source of increase in any net worth.

That said I have more actual money in the market then I do cash in rentals (I have litterly 35k into 3 rentals that return positive cash flow of 1200/mos nice to use opm)
