Remembering context of the post read so far

Post by ray.james » Wed Nov 07, 2018 3:30 pm

I am seeing something surprising with the forum software that I am unsure if it is a limited feature or a bug. The software seems to remember the last post I read and when I click on the thread next time - it takes me to the next immediate post that was "unread".

However when I use the quick links to find all my posts, to read the threads where I actively responded, it defaults to the first post of the thread. It does not remember the last post I read. Is this expected functionality of the software. Is there a way to enable it to remember the last post I have been on ? Thank you.

edit: fixed and simplified, Its a technical problem and explaining it is half of it.

I did some research and found that the link is formed differently in each case which causes this to happen. I too have seen this in action for quite some time and just know it is going to happen. It may be something that could be addressed but those that administer the site would have to determine that.

Using a well worn example I provide the links below for the on-going thread -
U.S. stocks in freefall

On the main page I use the link is constructed to go to where I was last time.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=80065&newpost=4200 ... ead#unread

On the My Posts page it does not.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=80065

Cheers

Ah! i see, makes sense; I just checked.

Is the limited functionality coming from phpbb or the feature disabled for this forum? Would be interesting to know from administrators. Thank you.

Not an administrator, but I suspect it's phpbb functionality since my understanding is the board does very little, if any, customization of the phpbb software/settings.

When you go to the Your Posts link, do you see a round icon to the left of the thread title, that is sometimes red? If you click that icon it should take you to the first unread post in that thread.

Excellent that works! So the read icon always has the "unread" built into the link. I always thought of them as color indicator and not a link!
