organizations that help sea animals

Post by mouses » Mon Nov 05, 2018 1:33 pm

I'm looking at charities to include in my will. I'm particularly looking for organizations that help sea animals.

I spoke to Ocean Conservancy, and they seem to mostly do policy work. That is important, but I also want hands on the ground so to speak. Charity Navigator gives them the highest rating four stars.

Defenders of Wildlife, according to their website, does seem to be hands on the ground, but I haven't been able to reach them by phone (hold forever) to verify what they do or to ask why their website says they spend 3% in fundraising but charity navigator says 14%, Plus, they spend a lot on administrative costs, and aren't really upfront about that on their own website as they lump it in with programs. Three stars from Charity Navigator.

World Wildlife Fund does not have much concrete info on their website and Charity Navigator says they spend 20% on fundraising. Three stars from Charity Navigator.

The Nature Conservancy?

Normally I donate to small local groups that I know well, but for this category it seems like big organizations, more financially ineffective, are what I'm stuck with.

Does anyone know anything about these organizations or have other ones to recommend I take a look at?

Thanks.

My kids did a project where they studied bycatch, which is the entrapment of non-target species in commercial fishing. dolphins, turtles, fish, etc. It's a huge problem. The fishing nets get discarded in the ocean where they continue to snare animals. It is a difficult problem, both technical solutions and policy/enforcement are difficult. In the kids' research they came across two professors working in the area who were very helpful. You might consider contacting these professors and asking where your donation would have the best impact. I will PM you their contact info.
Or, you can ... decline to let me, a stranger on the Internet, egg you on to an exercise in time-wasting, and you could say "I'm probably OK and I don't care about it that much." -Nisiprius

Have a look at Monterey Bay Aquarium: https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/con ... nd-science
While it is an aquarium, it also does rescues and research. I happen to know a post PhD researcher that does some work for them.

I donate to Monterey Bay Aquarium, but otherwise do not have an affiliation with them.

Thank you for considering.

I've been a supporter of the Ocean Cleanup project since the early days. Cleaning up the mess we've made absolutely helps marine life.

It is definitely a moonshot type of project but they recently launched their first cleanup system. Hopefully it works great and they launch several more!

Not strictly sea animals, but https://www.bird-rescue.org/ is a good one to consider.
