What do you spend your money on outside of expenses and investments?
What do you spend your money on outside of expenses and investments?
I’ve been pretty prudent with my purchases, but after seeing some posts on tax loss harvesting, credit card/bank account churning, etc, I realize I’m still not 100% “efficient.” But this got me thinking - what are some of the “inefficient” things my fellow bogleheads like to spend their money on?
I realized I don’t really collect anything nor have I really bought something for myself in quite a while...so, I’m curious - what do you spend your money on outside of expenses and investments?

Everything you spend money on outside savings is an expense.

The question is so overly broad. A lot of people have hobbies they like to spend money on. What do you do when you're not working?

Re: What do you spend your money on outside of expenses and investments?
most people spend their non essential money on cars, unnecessary graduate school, bigger houses than they need, etc.
trips to maldives are trivial in cost compared to owning and maintaining unnecessarily large homes or luxury vehicles.
anyways, for me I'd say travel and restaurants

I love to travel, though we haven't done much recently. I like kayaking, camping, and other outdoor activities, which gladly take up lots of fun money.

Offroading gear for my Wrangler. This is my first year in the activity, so expenses are high but controlled. 5 tires, about $1,000, Rock Rails, about $550, rear lift (DIY front) $100, replace the steering stabilizer $40, FRS radio, fire extinguisher required by club $50. Trail fees about $100 so far, club membership $50. The activity brings one or both of my 2 boys (18 and 22) with me. I'm waiting before I do my next purchase....probably skid plate for oil pan and transmission for about $200 until I sell some fire wood or get my next RSU's paid out.

daycare and taxes......besides that I guess since we don't really good, take out food, an occasional concert....The rest is just staying above water with bills, and trying to pay down debts.

Re: What do you spend your money on outside of expenses and investments?
I've enjoyed taking one class per semester (mostly online) at the local community college for the past several years: meteorology, geography, art history, music, criminal law, trigonometry, macroeconomics, etc. All the courses I didn't have time to take when I was in college the first time (back in the early 70s). CC tuition was very reasonable. However, now that I'm over the age of 65, tuition is free and my only expense is the cost of the textbook.
I've also been studying Korean on my own (Rosetta Stone) for the past year.
Travel.
Renting a rowing machine.
And, of course, what I pay the cable company for Internet access.
