West Michigan Bogleheads Chapter - chat

Post by David Jay »

I have renamed this as the “chat” thread. Some of you have already started to use it that way, that’s great.

Please continue to check in if you want to be included in the contact list.

I will create a “Master Thread” for meeting announcements as we get things under way over the next weeks and months.

I will be retiring in January and I would be willing to coordinate.

I was thinking of the 131 and 31 corridors: KZO to GRR, South Haven to Muskegon, but no limitations for those who want to drive in from up north or Lansing area.

I live in metro GR.

As I said above, please keep responding so I can PM everyone about getting together.

I have one last big overseas trip coming up in early November, getting back just before Thanksgiving. That suggests that first get together will be in early December.

In the meantime, be thinking about what you would like to get out of a BH chapter. That will be the question that we will explore as we have our first “coffee” together.

I suppose one thing we can discuss is how best to take advantage of local resources, for instance, we have some great credit unions.

Are these all Chex or hard pulls?
Would be a great first topic over coffee.
Also if there are referral bonuses the group can get for one another!

From my personal experience, which is dated by several years, United and LMCU are soft, while CWCU and Honor are hard pulls. Not sure on Chex. It was nice when we had Northpointe 5% and Mercantile 3%, but those programs were canceled. I think AAC CU has 3%, but I do not have them.

LMCU only pays on 15k per account but you and your spouse can each have an account. 30k at 3% guaranteed is pretty nice.

I thought it was $25k ea. Hmm. I usually have only $10k in there anyway.

The Northpointe 5% has an interesting story. Apparently one representative from the bank was working with Doctor of Credit to publicize the account, unfortunately, Northpointe got loads and loads of applicants that did the bare minimum to earn 5% all the way up to the max balance - often with 10 or however many debit transactions of 50 cents. I imagine allying with a blog like that was quite costly for Northpointe.

I suspect that DoC is based in Michigan. DoC profiled an arbitrage opportunity with the Michigan Lotto, which ended up in the news.

In fact, he very likely reads this board :happy

Anyways, I hope the local credit unions remain healthy. I also hope that their APY follows the upward trend of interest rates :happy

Yes, I agree. United Bank of Michigan just announced 2 weeks ago their rates going from 4% to 5% APY.

Kalsee CU offers 3% on up to a $25,000 balance with 12 transactions a month. Kellogg Community CU offers 4% on up to $15,000 with 20 transactions.

No, these last few weeks of work have gotten very busy. Then there is the busy-ness of the Holidays.

I am not going to set up any meetings until after retirement (January 15th).

For those interested, ChooseFI is holding a Meetup/Potluck on Saturday May 4 at Millennium Park in GR. It will take place from 3-7pm. If you have not already joined the ChooseFI Grand Rapids Facebook group, you can find more information there. There are a lot of things in common with Bogleheads and the Financial Independence movement of course...
