After-tax 401(k) Contributions and W2

Post by delconte » Thu Oct 11, 2018 11:54 am

Can someone who has done After-tax 401(k) contributions as part of a Mega Backdoor Roth IRA tell me if the contributions showed up in any box of their W2? Thanks!

No.

Box 12 on your W2 will show your pre-tax contributions to a 401K as code D.

Making additional after-tax contributions to your 401K is not a taxable event and so is not reported at the time you contribute. When you convert the after-tax funds to Roth, you will receive a 1099-R showing the distribution from your 401K, and box 5 will show the amount that you contributed.

No. There is nothing to report to the IRS.

Do you qualify for retirement savings credit? If so, you can claim it based on after tax contributions. However, the income limit is very low for this credit.

Designated Roth 401(k) contributions show up in Box 12 code AA even though they are not a taxable event, so I was thinking this might be similar. But I do not see an appropriate code.

For most people, the best place to find this information is in their pay stub, which usually has more information than a W-2.
