What the heck is growing in my yard?

Post by Jags4186 » Wed Oct 10, 2018 2:33 pm

Hello folks,

I have this giant mushroom thing growing in my yard. I’ve dug it up twice now in the last two months and it has returned in relatively the same spot. I’ve googled mushrooms and I can’t seem to find anything similar to this. To give you an idea, this bad boy probably weighs in the 20-25lb range based on prior ones I’ve dug up. What’s interesting about this growth is that it is much darker than prior mushroom growths—prior ones were much closer to a white color.

Maybe if you let it grow it will spout legs/limbs and walk away.

From afar, it looks like it might be a "hen of the woods" mushroom.

They are edible and decisions from what I understand. However, DO NOT EAT unless you get a firm ID locally.

Was there a tree stump there in the past? It's possible it is growing on the leftovers of that. This would be the fruiting body.

I’ve only been in this house for 3 months but it looks to me like no tree has been here—it’s pretty close to the house. When I first moved in there was a giant mushroom type thing that didn’t look at all like a mushroom and I just went over with with my lawn mower. Within a few days it shrivled up black and I dug it up leaving bare dirt in the spot. After a ton of rain one day I look out the window and there is another giant mushroom thing growing. I dug it up and threw it away with the lawn debri. Then one day I look out the window and this monstrosity is there.

We’ve had just obnoxious amounts of rain and humidity these last 3 months, and even today its greater than 80 degrees in Northern NJ. I’m also getting some other more “traditional” looking mushrooms in my yard, but nothing like this.

The mushrooms we see above ground are just the flower heads of the plant that lives underground. Like others have said, you most likely have a dead tree or stump buried in that area. Once it's depleted, you probably will never see the mushrooms in that spot again.

Would you suggest I leave it or continue digging it up?

You are in their prime area and this has been a perfect year for them. The "body" of these things lives underground, usually in roots or rotting wood. When conditions are right, they shoot up the mushroom. the mushroom part generates spores that spread and allow them to reproduce.

I would wager there was a tree at that spot once that has been removed.

Note: I am not a professional, but i do grow a few types of mushrooms as a hobby. i also gather wild hens-of-the-woods for a friend who really likes them. I am mildly allergic to eating them.

That thing could live for years underground. Some times they go for a few years without fruiting.

Most every county has an agriculture extension office (an extension of the state university). They can probably identify this for you just from the picture. Do an internet search for your county agriculture extension office and email them.

I was going to suggest a kind of shelf fungus, but hen of the woods (maitake mushroom) does look like a good possibility.

There are mushroom growers and foragers all over where I live. Maybe you can find one where you live. Maybe you could even sell it!

Hen of the woods, They are supposedly very tasty. Dont trash it yet, I'll see if I can post pictures from my mushroom ID book for you.

Can you get a picture of the underside and does it change colors when you bruise it?

Other than the fact that it’s a little scary and bugs are out in full force today, I should be able to get a picture of the underside. Will report back!

Not that this helps in your exact situation, but the Chicago Sun Times had an article on mushroom picking this morning. They do mention "hen of the woods" in the article with recipes if it turns out to be that.

Some edible mushrooms are selling for top dollars at restaurants $10-50/lb. You might actually find yourself a nice surprise here...

If this is maitake (hen of woods) like others mentioned, they are like $10-20/lb.

I don't know what it is. Two years ago, we took out a couple of weedy trees. Last year, almost my entire lawn was suddenly covered in fungus that looked very similar to what you have, feasting on the roots of the dead trees. If it's any consolation, it didn't come back this year.

I think it is one of those mushrooms that is highly prized by mushroom aficionados.
Ask around, someone will gladly take it off your hands.
Probably worth quite a bit of money.

There is probably an old decaying tree stump below and mushrooms poking out of it. Dig it out, replace it with bought top soil, a few grass seeds, and you are fine.

Another mushroom nerd checking in. Others beat me to it but yeah it sure looks like hen of the woods. Don't eat it unless you or someone else can positively ID it. FWIW (and take it with a grain if salt, I'm no expert) but I'm not aware of a deadly poisonous mushroom that grows in the leafy cluster type habit like that. The ones I'm familiar with are solitary to scattered, like aminita phalloides. Always do a spore print and key it out before eating!

Thanks everyone for the help. I’m am going to dig up, cover with fresh top soil and seed as someone above suggested.

And while I appreciate everyones concern, there is 0 chance I’m eating something that just shot up in my yard. I mean, if a hamburger appeared on your front doorstep, would you eat it? :D
