Vanguard bond funds - Qualified vs. non-qualified?i

Post by doin tings » Mon Oct 01, 2018 10:25 am

I'm trying to decide how to distribute investments between taxable and non-taxable accounts. So I'm assessing whether distributions are qualified vs. non-qualified for tax purposes.

For comparison purposes I was reviewing VGBIX (Total Bond Market II Index Fund Investor Shares). I looked at Vanguard's 2017 end-of-year chart and it doesn't have an entry for QDI.

Here is the page: https://advisors.vanguard.com/VGApp/iip ... endfigures

It just has an empty entry for QDI like it is N/A. Yet it surely has distributions. So why would they not show the percentage that are QDI?

I believe most/all bond funds are non-qualified dividends. Thus why many keep them in tax-advantaged (usually pre-tax) accounts, along with REITs. White Coat Investor has a popular page which includes calculations to show that this is not the best way to maximize after-tax return (better to pay less taxes on equities) but this forum hasn't really adapted it. I don't hold bonds so I haven't given it much thought.

It is N/A. Qualified dividends are from stocks not bonds.
