Rating system for posts/posters ?

Post by davidsorensen32 »

Hello Admins, just thinking aloud - how do you feel about incorporating some sort of rating system for posts (or posters) ? The reason is as we've grown in leaps and bounds, I'm sure you've noticed a lot of pretty low quality posts these days. Random opinions without facts, distorted data, illogical inferences, and the most frustrating of all - enormous but completely content free posts. Long, wieldy sentences that mean absolutely nothing. People with too much time on their hands venting mumbo jumbo gibberish. On one hand we have posters like Taylor, KlangFool, nisiprius, Raybo, Homer, livesoft , triceratop who post brilliant insightful posts. And on the other hand you have pretty useless chaps who are a huge time sink at best.

Perhaps incorporating some sort of a rating system would allow folks to self police and let visitors to the board quickly sort through the good posts/posters and ignore the bad ones ? We skip over repeat offenders with low scores. What do you think ? IMO at our scale some sort of quality control is necessary to keep the board relevant and informative.

A great way to learn is to help others. I may be one of those time sinks but being engaged is what keeps me here learning more every day. Otherwise you just have newbies asking questions and then leaving.

Not that I'm against a point system but I don't agree with your premise as to only give points to those that already know the most. But I'd happily give points to people who let others know they have been heard. Probably one of the reasons I like to respond to posts that have few answers. Nobody likes to feel ignored.

I admire the effort but are we on the same forum? I see almost none of this.

The longer posts tend to be a little esoteric for me but I can't recall a long, complicated post about nonsense, gibberish, or mumbo-jumbo. Plus, they'd be pretty easy to skip over. You should see the other forums I go to! This is the most intelligent and best curated forum I've seen. You can't even swear here! It sure seems like people who draw incorrect conclusions are almost immediately called out. That's the best and worst thing about this place -- depending on which side you happen to be on at that particular moment. :D

On the other hand, I do see lots of things I disagree with, but they tend to be mercifully short. They're seldom flat-out wrong -- as in factually incorrect. I just disagree with the viewpoint.

And then there are things like cars and watches and college where somebody strikes the match and it just smolders for days with no right or wrong...

Feel free to give me one-star feedback for this post. I have checked my post for sentence-structure wieldiness. :D

This forum already is diligently moderated.

The “rating system” already is in place. It is reflected in the number of reads, number of comments, and recency of comments.

In this respect it is one of the best administered online forums I know of.

I never found reading triceratop’s posts to be particularly laden with revelatory and new information. Should I downvote his posts? :confused

This, ahem, will almost certainly not happen.

I don't think it is needed. After a couple of years on this forum, I "know" the long time posters so I know who to avoid and whose posts I should read. I assume others have developed their own opinions. As others have said, the moderators are good at their jobs.

Being active in other forums (mostly IT) we see and discuss this too. Lots of "n00bs" asking questions with no basis or that have become common knowledge.

Additionally since most of us have the ability to do internet searches at a whim to locate many of our questions. There's a reason whey LMGTFY.com exists.

At the end of the day I'm a "n00b" here and am likely to ask basic questions-since I am searching for input you that addresses "MY" question specifically, not an old answer to a question from a year or so ago.

4.5 stars for daveydoo.

I just wish those "cars and watches" threads could be moderated to minimize the "non-answers"... that is, someone asks whether they can afford a certain car, or what fancy watch is recommended...
How is it "helpful" to bash the desire to have such an item, separate from "I don't think you can afford it based upon information provided"?
There is too much of "the winner is s/he who dies with the most unspent money" attitude in those responses, and, most importantly, that was not the question asked.

This is the internet, if you don’t like it or it doesn’t interest you, don’t read it.

Last thing I want to see bogleheads turn into is a social media nightmare with convoluted rating systems and reviews, even more convoluted filtering and display of content due to aforementioned ratings and reviews, badges and other profile status icons, etc.

This forum is clean and simple with most content still financially oriented. Good enough for me.

The mods are also very good and timely.

I've participated in forums with rating systems. I haven't seen it work well.

First, a one-dimensional rating system (thumbs up, thumbs down) is useless. Even the movie ratings were forced to add additional information, like "rated PG-13 for language."

Second, and much more serious, there is no way to enforce sincerity in ratings. People inevitably engage in mischief-making, factionalism, downvoting posters they just don't like personally, gaming the system, etc. In the case of Bogleheads, I think people interested in using the forum to drive traffic to their business or website would organize systematic astroturfing--asking employees and clients who aren't regular forum readers to join the forum for the sole purpose of upvoting their postings.

The number of people willing to vote on quality, rather than agreement/disagreement, is never high enough.

One forum I frequent is a language learning forum with participants from all over the world and rarely--but not rarely enough--someone will go on a spree of downvoting everything from countries they are hostile toward.

Take a look at Slashdot sometime, if you've never looked at it. They have a very complicated system, using custom forum software supported by years of ad money. You only get moderation points if you earn them by participating, and there is not only moderation, there is "metamoderation" in which people rate the ratings made by moderators. Look at at threads like "Apple Removes Facebook's Onavo Security App from the App Store" and see comments like "Is Venezuela socialist?" and "Every time you post this garbage from your Apple device, you prove that you are a dumb [expletive deleted]."

Yes, let's gamify everything.

Bogle ratings for posters - One Bogle, Two Bogles, etc. Or maybe Not Bogglish, Bogglish, Very Bogglish, etc?

And votes for posts - Up, Down!

Then badges - you have to award badges! "Most Bogliscious Post of the Day", "Social Security Scientist", "Mortgage Madness" - the possibilities are endless.

Bah. Let's leave things as they are.

The board is moderated to keep it relevant, as defined in the Board Rules. "Informative" is in the eye of the beholder, not the forum approved definition. I am perfectly capable of digesting information and opinions, and I regularly skip over "time sink" posts, without the use of a rating system that tells me who I should listen to.

I would not participate in a forum where everyone shared the same "approved" viewpoint.

There's a wonderful episode of the Netflix show "Black Mirror" (season 2, I think) that shows what can happen when you live in a society that grades, i.e., assigns points to or "likes" and "dislikes," every daily interaction. I suggest you watch it. We're already living in that society to an extent, and it doesn't appear to be working out for us very well. At least no one seems to be very happy anymore.

Huge time sync? When you see the big goofy smiley face with the dollar-sign eyes you can quickly know its one of the responses not to read if you find me to be a useless chap.

You mentioned some of your favorite posters - you can self-select yourself - read their responses and skip others.

Don't forget, *both* spouses need to have those 100k jobs for it to be "doable".

[Also curious about that "husband and spouse" characterization. What's the meaning of that wording choice? Why not "both spouses", if one wants to avoid the older "husband and wife"? What about a "wife and wife"? Or don't "they" tend to "both" earn $100k??]

I don't think this is necessary. One can search a specific user posts if they have a favored poster to "follow" their comments on topics where they've responded. Or even PM them if they want to ask a certain person their view on a topic.

One can skip the "opinions" or read through them (based on their desire) and maybe find a nugget or two to comment on in the thread. Also, a lot of topics here are opinion oriented so the wide and diverse contributions actually enhance the content -- in my opinion.

Hi All,
Several points:

1.) OP idea is good, but perhaps no suitable for this forum. Why?. Because of demographics.

2.) StackOverflow Link: https://stackoverflow.com/ is the best resource for all things programming. It has votes and reputation. Good incentive system. You can't imagine how useful and powerful this site has been for programmers. This is living proof that the system works.

3.) The problem with BH is that quality gets buried by garbage and you have to spend time sorting out. Only reading post by certain ppl is a recipe for atrophy, so that's a terrible solution. If we could figure out a system to rank quality in questions and answers it would be amazing.

4.) Test their version of BH forum. Here https://money.stackexchange.com/. See what you think.

Sounds too much like what's going on with YouTwitFace right now. And like the "social score" in China.

Besides, how many staff members would have to be hired to implement this policy? What would be the vetting process to find people qualified to make the kind of judgments you are talking about and what kind of training would they get?

Rating systems tend to result in an echo chamber and are a form of censorship even if what they are saying meets the forum rules. I like it here specifically because it is not an echo chamber and there are a variety of different people with different viewpoints posting. This lets me evaluate differing viewpoints and further refine my own which I view as a positive rather than a negative. I would think that a rating system would also lead to less new people posting questions which would lead to less engagement from existing users which would make the forum less valuable, not more. The moderators already do a good job of keeping discussion on track, removing inappropriate content, and ending threads on topics against forum rules or that have run their course.

Posting pet peeves:

1. Subject line too too vague - saw a post today called "Social Security".

2. COMPLETELY quoting a previous 100 line post and sometimes posts with quotes requoted over and over. You can just include the point you are replying to. Maddening when reading on a mobile phone.

3. Off forum posts like HELP ME FIND A WALLPAPER PASTE BUCKET.

So I would agree that something - within the bound of the standard software would help.

This is probably the best forum I’ve seen. I came here for financial advice and ended up learning so much other stuff.

If there were ratings I might have not read stuff I definitively benefited from.

Love this the way it is and happy to read from anyone whether I agree or not.

What I've seen is many posters with less relevant or rhetorical questions simply lack responses to their questions...the thread simply dies from a lack of interest. Agree that the moderators do a good job keeping threads civil, on point, and out of the no-touch zone of politics, profanity, etc...

I gotta say that I must be reading a different forum than the OP.

Just skip stuff that you think is worthless. Anyone here for a short period of time can separate the wheat from the chaff. And, while not everyone agrees on everything, there's not usually much chaff.

Whoa !! 40 posts in 12 hours !! Hope admins are noticing the interest. Don’t have time to respond to each individual post but I will say that with the ever increasing participation on our forum it’s getting harder and harder to find the few good posts from among the oceans of garbage these days. Some sort of ranking system is needed. Moderators do a good job here but you can’t moderate quality. Unfortunately quality is not equal to quantity - someone with 100,000 posts might have totally junk posts whereas someone with 1,000 posts might have each high quality posts. Think about the new folks on the board who might not know who the better posters are. Take a look at Quora too - they got a good easy system going. Finally let’s not be Luddites. We need to change for the better .

What I think will be useful for this forum is having to ability to rate answers and highest rated answer will move to the top of the page. This way if you find old question that is applicable to you, you can read/find best answers relatively quick without having to read all answers/multiple pages.

To be fair, most of the comments are going against your suggestion or are merely chatter (like this post), there are only 3 or so comments out of the 40+ agreeing with or suggesting something similar to what you said.

This is a great place for new folks to post and learn from those more knowledgeable. I would hate to see a new member miss out on the knowledge available for fear of reprisal.

Seriously humorous! 8-) The overwhelming majority of the responses express pointed disinterest in the OP's suggestion.

I think we should make them orange too.
No, salmon[1].

1. When I was still employed at Megacorp, the guy who sat behind me was the software lead for a different project. He was what I called an "attractive nuisance" in that when he was at his desk, people would come and talk to him constantly. This would interrupt my naps. One particular event had about half-a-dozen folks there arguing about what color some control on the GUI[2] should be. This guy, let's call him "Steve"[3] argued for "salmon" as proper choice. From that time on, if anyone came to "Steve's" desk and asked a color-related question I would yell over, "SALMON!"

So how many negs would I get for this post? [4]

2. Graphical User Interface, in case anyone doesn't know.

3. That was, after all, his name.

4. Lots.

So let me summarize, if I might.

We should make this forum be reddit/personalfinance

They already have the system and a good % of questions asked here are asked over there.
