2011 Honda was with 6 differential flushes?

Post by Cody » Thu Jul 12, 2018 4:48 pm

My daughter bought 2011 Honda CRV that has great service records (all done by Honda shops). It currently has 82k miles. And All Wheel Drive.

But I see that the differential fluid has been flushed/changed 6 times.

Did the Honda Service shops just take advantage of the previous owner or am I missing something?

I pulled this off Carguru: "Actually The 2012 Honda Calls for the Differential Fluid to be changed at 15,000 miles and every 30,000 miles there after. So the dealer did follow the recommended change." I figure 2011 is the same.

But they were changing it every 15k miles always.

Thanks,
Cody

Obviously, I do not know what the dealer did with your specific car. But I do know that if you let them, they would flush it every month, every 1K miles.

Just follow the manual going forward.

My 2006 Honda CRV manual says change diff fluid at 90,000 miles.

After some thought - maybe the CRV was being taken back for noises or problems with the diff and the flushes were supposed to remedy it.
What is the timing/miles of these 6 flushes?

According to the 2011 Honda CRV manual I'm looking at, you only change the rear differential fluid every 60,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first. If it is being towed behind a vehicle, they you change it every 2 years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first.

It was changed at:
76k
59k
43k
30k
18k

I don't know if it was towed vehicle.

Hum?

Where did the vehicle reside? I know a guy who worked in Manhattan and brought his car in every work day to get his oil changed. Why? It was cheaper than what parking cost.

So you can assume that the rear diff is in great shape. The previous owner was taken advantage of, yes, but keeping fresh fluid in the diff is a good thing.

What page in the manual says when to do what? I can't seem to find that (as listed in the index). You'd think "maintenance" but I don't see it. Its early morning I guess.

Thanks much,

There may be a completely separate maintenance manual. It's been a while since I owned a new Honda.

Some people don’t trust the manufacturer recommendations and change fluids more frequently than needed just for their own piece of mind. The prior owner could have been that sort of person

As long as they weren’t changing it to mask a problem with the diff (I.e get rid of a whirring sound) then consider yourself lucky that the previous owner was diligent about maintaining the vehicle

15k seems the norm and watch for the Maintenace Minder code. The guys here have good info about everything CRV.

My 2004 CRV also says 90,000 miles for diff fluid change. However, it starts making a rubbing sound when making low speed tight turns (such as in a parking lot) if I let it go past roughly 25-35,000 miles. I've been getting it changed more frequently.

It's also possible the dealer had their own maintenance schedule that they tricked the owner into using.

I know people like that, but the people I know are just into frequent oil changes. For some reason, they neglect the transmission, brake and rear end fluids. :confused
