I don't set an alarm but wake up around 7:30am every day (dog, cat and/or husband will wake me up around that time if I'm still sleeping). I walk the dogs first thing which wakes me up. Beyond that my schedule is not set in stone. I will make a latte and take it to the roof to check out the plants if it's a weekend or if I have time during the week. I will shower if it's a weekday and I didn't the night before. I usually leave for work around 8:40am and arrive before 9am. On the weekends I workout around 9 or 10am after reading the paper.

At this stage in my life (no kids, flexible work schedule) I am not forced to maintain a tight routine. Honestly, this isn't great for me. I operate well within the confines of firm expectations and boundaries or requirements. Without them, I find myself too often spending time and energy making endless decisions: what to wear, when to get up, whether to read another article before dressing, how far to walk the dogs, what time I need to show up to work, etc. On the weekends it's even harder. I may waste 3 hours reading my phone (mostly news but still) trying to decide what workout to do and when to do it and whether to eat before or after and whether to cook or walk to Starbucks.

For the early risers here, I have to ask: have you ever used the Snooze button? I bet I have used it maybe 5 times.
I used to be awful with the snooze button. I'd snooze for 30 minutes. Then a job change had me getting up much earlier for a while, and without even trying I broke the snooze habit. That was 8 years ago - I've probably snoozed a handful of times since.

6am.

Out of bed, dressed and heading to work by 6:15
Arrive at work 6:35-6:40
Gym till about 7:30
Work till 4~4:30 and head home
Home before 5.

I hear all these parents complain that they have no time.... But if you ask probing questions usually it turns out that they dont go till work till 8 or 9... fighting hours of traffic, then not able to leave till 5 or 6, forcing them to fight traffic again on the way home - barely making it home in time to see their kids before bedtime.

Never understood why all that headache was worth sleeping a little later in the morning... :confused I love mornings... Grabbing that giant mug of coffee after the gym is a highlight of my day. :sharebeer
Your schedule confuses me. You work for an hour and then hit the gym for an hour and then work again? When do you actually "get ready" for work (surely getting ready involves more than putting on clothes). I, too, get up at 6am. But then I shower until 6:20. Then blowdry hair for 15 minutes. Then flat-iron hair for 10 minutes. Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Make lunch. Brush teeth. Out the door at 7:12 in order to get to work at 7:30. Work until 4:30. Home at 4:48. Stupid one hour lunch resulting in me wasting 40 minutes watching YouTube every day. :annoyed

It's all about priorities. The huge majority of us aren't working 100hrs/wk, if you can't find an hour a day to do something that is really important to you...then the harsh reality is that it isn't really that important to you. The wife and I totally designed our life around two things that are really important to us: spending time with our kids and health. These two priorities determined our decisions about where to buy a home, where (and when) to work, how to organize household responsibilities, our leisure time activities, etc.
Oh, dont get me wrong... I dont work 100 either. I do my 40 and get home. My point being I know people who complain they have no time, but if you dig you find they are not actually working 100 hours either.... they just sleep late and roll into work late... and thus have to stay late...
Sorry I didn't make myself more clear, I was actually agreeing with you. People complaining they have no time to do this or that is one of my pet peeves; almost everybody has time, they just choose to allocate it in ways that often don't emphasize efficiency and productivity. It's no different than people who say they can't save, who'll spend $200 on Starbucks or various subscription services that they don't even use or eat out every night of the week. You can, you just choose not to; and there is nothing wrong with that (if that is the life you want), it's the thinking that "you can't" that is the bothersome part.

When I was working (small-college teaching) I usually woke up, or my wife woke me up, a bit before 7. (She had to do it if I spent too much time goofing off on the computer before going to bed.) Then it was about a half hour showering and getting dressed, a half hour eating breakfast, a few minutes to fix a sandwich for lunch and make a last-minute trip to the bathroom, and a 15-20 minute walk to campus. That got me there around 8:30 or slightly later, to get ready for my first class which was usually at 9.

After I retired, my wakeup time varied a lot at first, between 7 and 9 depending on how much time I spent on the computer before going to bed. Lately I've been trying to stick to a more consistent schedule, going to bed 11-11:30 and waking up naturally at 6-6:30. This lets me walk while it's still relatively cool (although muggy) down here in the South. I don't "need" to stay up late on the computer any more... I can do that stuff during the day now! But sometimes I backslide. :annoyed

My husband and I have used an alarm clock in the bathroom as a "Get up now!" alarm clock. I may set my iPod Touch or Apple watch as a pre-wake up alarm, but having to get out of bed to shut off the stupid alarm clock in the bathroom ensures that I really, really am aware that I need to get up NOW.

2am to hit the gym. On vacation i take it easy, like today when I’m up at 3:30 to hit the hiking trails.
Impressive!
Do you happen to work in radio?
No, I don’t work in radio. I have a 9-5 job at megacorp. I like hitting the gym early and my work day is from around 5am-2pm (I have a global job so that they don't really care what hours are worked as long as I perform).

By doing my workouts so early I'm in a great mood when I show up for work.

I’ve been doing it for a few years now so I’m usually awake before the alarm goes off.

Since I retired, I just wake up when the light (or my bladder) wake me up. Since waking up early no longer has any association with going to work, I really enjoy sunrises as much as sunsets.

One of my favorite early morning activities is riding the motorcycle to a yoga class just after sunrise. Great light, cool air, very little traffic, and I can always tap a nap later :)

On workdays, I go to bed between 10 - 12:00 depending on what is happening/how I feel, and am up between 5-5:30am to be at work by 7 am. I am a slow mover in the morning.

On the weekends, I am usually up by 6:30. And I look forward to nap time on the weekends (an hour or two before 3 pm).

Retired… Typically I tell people I’m a little bit like a dog —- eat when I’m hungry and I sleep when I’m tired… So I can wake up anywhere between 5 AM and 8 AM depending on my energy level

On this topic, I just happen to be reading a book (from library) "Why We Sleep" by neuro-scientist Matthew Walker. It is fascinating. Mother nature developed our sleep pattern over 3.5 Million years to renew, refresh and repair our bodies and brains. How sleep deprivation generally 7 hours or less has major adverse consequences on reaction time, learning, memory. And it contributes to other ailments such as obesity, cancer etc...
There must be a correlation between # of kids and cancer then!

Ideally I would sleep from 11pm - 7am. I am not really a morning person. But my kids are, so I wake up when they do.

Research seems to suggest that early birds live longer. I'm not sure how many people can control this though once the requirement of work is gone.

Anyway, I know for the most part, I can't sleep more or at different hours than my body dictates.

Interesting thread though.

The book has an interesting chapter on this topic. Simply stated, lack of sleep undermines the body immune system to fight diseases. E.g.: The author cites epidemiological studies that show night shift workers as having higher cancer risks.

I much prefer mornings to nights. Something about that calm quiet when everybody else is asleep.

4:45 M-F which allows me to make lunch and walk the dog for 30 minutes before heading to work at 6:15. In bed usually 8:30-9.

Wake up naturally around 6a on weekends.

I retired 8 years ago this week at age 49 and I'm still up most days by 6am. Quick cup of coffee and then a 3-5 mile walk. I lost 75 pounds about a year ago and I have not gained any weight back.

I am lucky when I get 6 hours of sleep.

My spouse is a drinker and a TV watcher and has never worked. When she collapses into bed at 3:30am that usually wakes me up.

My BMI is 24 so I don't think the lack of sleep causes me to gain weight.

During school months, I generally get up at 6AM to help get the kids ready for school. During breaks from school I still naturally awake about the same time. On Saturday mornings, I set an alarm for 5AM to go running at 6. 11 or 12 PM is bedtime and a short nap in the afternoon is a frequent occurrence.

I set my alarm at 6:50am, I have every intention to get up and workout, but it doesn't happen very often. I wake up with the alarm, and then I probably get up at around 8:30 or 9 or 9:30 or 10, but usually not later than 11am. I want to get up at 6:50am!! My body just doesn't want to listen to me. :x

My alarm clock (mini dachshunds) wakes me up about 4 A.M or so every day. Though sometimes tired this early in the morning, by 6:30 A.M, I have had 2 cups of coffee, read my favorite blogs ( #1 is bogleheads ) fed my dogs and exercised.

When employed, I woke up at 6 AM

I get up when I wake up, which is around 5:30a. Key to my quality of life is having a fresh pot of coffee ready to go. (We prepare the coffeemaker the night before and set the timer.) I read the news and catch up on email until breakfast at 8:00a, with a nice, long dog walk afterward.

I prefer going to the gym in the afternoon.

Bedtime is around 10.

For me it's bedtime between 10 and 11. Her its 9 - 10 although she is always awake when I get to bed. She's up reading on her tablet still in bed about 6 AM and I'm out of bed around 7:30 with her. She goes to exercise walk before 8 AM and I go after she gets back when I finish reading on the computer, maybe 9:30 to 10:30 AM.

Still working here.

Up at 4:15a M-Fr. In car by 4:30, at gym by 5:10, in office by 6:45-7:15 depending on whether I have early meetings and how snappy my workout is. Out of office by 5pm 90% of time. If I go to work later, I add another 30-60 minutes to my daily 1:45 of commuting, which I try to avoid at all costs.

In bed by 10-10:30p, some days earlier if really tired.

On weekends or rare home office days I try to sleep until tortured awake by kids, usually 6am.

Wish I could sleep more, but struggle to balance, sleep, time w kids, work, and exercise. Something has to give. I dont have the will power to exercise after kids go to bed, need morning routine and threat of massive traffic on way to work to get me out of bed. I have been doing this for 4 years, and feel that it has worked better than any prior set up. Moving closer to work not an option.
Same kind of schedule as you and same trouble balancing competing priorities. How is this working for you? Has the 4 years taken a toll? Genuinely interested.

We recently moved back to the US and my commute went from 30 minutes to 1:30 each way (walk plus train), or a 35 minute drive if I leave home before 5:30a/leave work after 7pm.

Mix this with demanding schedule in new senior-level role and I'm lucky to get an hour with my kids and an hour with my wife every day. And also feel like I'm not putting in the time needed to be successful in office...

Sleep - about 6 and a half a night; wake up call sometime around 6am.

I catch up on weekends (if kids don't wake me) or when I'm traveling. Intentionally book hotels very near office and don't do 6am flights / very late arrivals anymore. Great to catch up but then time with kids/wife dwindles to if schedules allow us to FaceTime...
Working all right but I could use another hour of sleep, really.

Right now I see wife and kids for 1-2 hours every night (she works too, and many evening its back to to the grind stone for her after kids are in bed).

I used to travel 4 days a week, but last 4 years its been more like one international trip for a week every 3-6 weeks which is much better to manage for all of us.

To be honest, we are considering a major life change with her quitting work or dramatically reducing schedule. Reduces her stress level, improves our weekends - not just chores, allows for lowering some costs like childcare and also moving much closer to my office reducing commute time. However that comes at a steep cost of reduced income that far exceeds cost savings, increased reliance on my income and more worringly reduced satisfaction for her from her job (I dont really see her as someone who would be happy as a SHM).

In the 18th century, French courtesans slept until noon and received friends and clients while still lying in bed covered by laces and silks. If any of them are still here, they should report in this thread.

Work afternoon shift until 11:30 pm if not stuck on jobsite 'til an ungodly hour. Home by midnight. Bike commute, so between that heart rate boost and my need for a shower, I'm usually up until 1. I lay down at 1, but often don't really fall asleep until 1:30 or even 2:00.

First alarm is at 7:45, but I do use the snooze. Rarely in bed past 9:00 as i feel I'm wasting my day if I am.

I wake up between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. I am redoing both my front and back yards and have been told to water, water, water in the summer heat. I have planted about thirty and the nursery is planting another five. I have taps on both sides of my house so I position the sprinklers and turn on the taps. Then I go to McDonald and get a diet coke, coffee and yogurt. I don't want to leave my house before 6:15 or else starting my car will wake up my neighbors. Then its eat breakfast and mess around in the garden for a few hours till it gets too hot. Sometimes I wake up a little later if I have done a lot of work in the garden the previous day. This is for the summer otherwise I go to the gym.

Retired. Four legged fishing buddy wakes me at 5AM. Cup of tea, read, breakfast, hitch up the boat and on the water by 6. :-)
