Please help find these shoes for an old lady

Post by kayanco »

Hi,

I'm desperately looking for these Dr. Scholl’s shoes. They are for an old women who can't walk in any other shoes. But I can't find them anywhere. By chance does anyone here know where to get them? Please let me know if you do, I'd be very thankful.

Thank you.

I searched eBay for a size 10 in womens Dr. Scholls sandals.

There are some similar styles, but not that exact style.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/DR-SCHOLLS-WOM ... SwkcFbJMon

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dr-scholls-dol ... SwpHpbFVCE

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dr-Scholls-Del ... SwtTVZjVNh

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dr-Scholls-San ... SwVuNa~14A

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dr-Scholls-Bro ... 8104!US!-1

Kind of like looking for a needle in a haystack of the internet.

Have you tried to contact them directly? Sometimes a nicely written note with all a picture and any numbers/identifying info can occassionally produce results.

+1 It's hard to believe with all the shoes on their website they don't have something she could wear. It might not be exactly the same style, but is that as important as the fit?

I think she can only wear shoes with this separation/partition for the thumb. Not sure what this style is called?

Currently she can't wear anything and walking barefoot, even outside. If I can't find the exact, I might have her try something that's a similar design.

It may be difficult to find another shoe with the exact same pattern on the top as the designs probably change every year or two. You probably want to find a similar shoe that has everything that's below the foot area the same as these. You might want to take side photos too.

When the big toe is separated from the others, I'd say it is called a "thong".

If she has trouble walking in anything but these, it may be time to visit a podiatrist and be evaluated for a different kind of shoe that meets her needs. When I had a foot problem, I tried different things the podiatrist recommended but ended up getting relief by buying a particular kind of walking/running shoe. It cost a little over $100 but was worth it since I was incurring that much in medical expenses trying other things.

This style, with the thingy between the toes, is called a "thong" sandal.

Women's feet either love or hate them. (I'm a lover!)

This particular thong has a very particular single strap across the top of the foot and no back-strap. Heel height and type (not evident in your photos) is important too. All these features combined make this sandal comfortable for your particular woman.

Advice to contact Dr Scholl's customer service is a great idea.

Next step, go to shoe websites and put "Women's thong sandal" into the search: amazon, zappos, 6pm, footsmart. Look for similar thongs. Be sure that anything you order offers free returns.

I've had luck doing this to find exact models of shoes I'm trying to replace. Go to EBay. Put in search box: (without quotes) "Scholls braided leather thongs" Then hit search. When you have result list, go to top of page and click the "Save this search option". Choose to get emails when new matches are listed. You can also put her size in the search parameters if you wish before saving the search.

This won't help you immediately, but may help find a future exact match.

If you write to the company, you might also ask if other shoes are made on the same last. Many shoemakers use only 10-20 lasts. While the decorative variations may have some effects on comfort, the soles/fit remain the same.

One day, you'll be able to feed the image into Google or search engine and they'll spit out a model and places where it's sold. For now, Google Image Search (available by simply right clicking on the image - last entry - "Search Google for image") only comes up with "flip-flops" for the top image ( https://www.google.com/search?tbs=sbi:A ... aAOIyt_1Lw ). The bottom image does much worse ( https://www.google.com/search?tbs=sbi:A ... yQZeSDU4vw )
Supposedly, eBay was to come out with some kind of image search, "Ebay to launch visual search tools for finding products using photos from your phone or web", Sarah Perez@sarahintampa / Jul 26, 2017 ( https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/26/ebay- ... ne-or-web/ ), but I wasn't able to locate it on their website. They mentioned Amazon and Pinterest as having some image searching capabilities, but I wasn't wasn't going to download their app just for that. I'm skeptical it will work that well for this application, while finding similar things might be something I can see it doing now.

Anyway, I noticed the six-leafed logo on the heel, and when searching Dr. Scholl products, didn't come across that, so I figured it was some kind of vintage logo (and item). I couldn't make out the logo or text on the center of the shoe, but

I noticed this one had the same logo, and could make out "Gel Pac Insoles" below the round logo in the middle of the shoe. The original photos appear to say something else, could they be different or different language? BTW, "Air Pillow" also came up in the search with similar type shoes by Dr. Scholl's. Anyway, good luck on your hunt and let us know how it turns out.

I personally have not found a podiatrist helpful in terms of accurate shoe recommendations. But there are businesses that specialize in this. My decades ago ortho doc referred me to one.

This style of sandal, where a strip comes up from the toe spacer and the wide strap is higher up on the foot is called a "Ridley thong". That might help find a pair with the same feel and fit.

I wanted to thank everyone who gave feedback and suggestions. I discussed with her that the exact same style is no longer available so I'll try to find a similar style based on the information you all shared. As some of you already guessed before me, she did say that she needs that support/grip around the thumb.

Thanks again all of you for your kind help.

Every day I notice an expansion of different brands offering "comfort" shoes and sandals.

It could be worth a trip to a podiatrist. They seem to have the scoop on the best brands that are recommended for different feet shapes/issues.

I will be forever thankful to the podiatrist who clued me in Saucony running shoes.

Once you have a sandal you love, it's hard to say goodbye. I feel your pain!

Other brands to consider are Dansko, Naot or Clarks. Some people swear by Vionic, but they just don't work for me. I hope you either find your replacement or an acceptable alternative.

You're welcome. Having personally experienced foot pain, I can appreciate the need for a comfortable pair of shoes. And I'm always up for a mystery/challenge. Anyway, I hope the fine lady finds what she needs or something close to it.

Our pleasure, OP!! Please let us know how it all turns out, by PM or otherwise. Godspeed to you and your loved one. She's lucky to have you.
Update on progress so far:

- I called Dr. Scholls customer service (as proposed by the members here). They were sympathetic and asked me to email them the photos while I was on the call. Unfortunately, they told me they no longer had anything similar. They reviewed the current offering on their own website but couldn't recommend anything that was similar. They recommend to go the physical stores that carried the shoes. So I took that lead.

- I searched for which physical stores had this brand shoes, and made a list:
Famous Footwear
Payless shoes
Kohls
DSW
JC Penny
Macy's
Sears

- Yesterday I drove to most of these. Turns out they don't carry a large selection of Dr. Scholl's, some had just one type of sandal, others none. So I looked for other brands with similar thong design.

- I bought about 6 pairs. I will go to the remaining stores today and buy some more similar shoes.

- My plan is to ship her all the shoes I find. She can keep those that suit her and I can return the rest. I'm hoping she finds at least one that she can use.

The key piece of information provided by another poster was the Gel-Pak logo. Then with Google Image and some persistence, it finally came up.

Great job! Persistence pays off. And it puts a name on the model "Nicky"! You might try using eBay or a 3rd party and doing an ongoing search over a few months and see if you get lucky (you'll need lots of luck). https://community.ebay.com/t5/Bidding-B ... p/25657904

Google images didn't find the photo in the listing, but TinyEye had 2 results shown below. I bolded the dates (Sep '16 & Jan '17) where they found (likely just links to the Walmart site), but if the link was live during those days, the shoe may not be as vintage as I originally thought. Don't know how this helps find it now, but it might be helpful in narrowing down the search.
