Cheapest ways to watch NBA playoffs

Post by ThankYouJack » Sun May 27, 2018 4:36 pm

I cut cable because I hardly ever watch tv but am considering watching some of the game 7 conference finals (on TNT I believe) and the finals. I don't have good reception if I hook up an antenna. Being able to record and fast forward would be a plus too. Any recommendations?

We don't have cable. I ask my son, "Let's watch the game tonight." He says, "OK" and connects his laptop to the TV. It works.

So ask your son to do this for you.

What does he stream it through? An illegal site?

Most of the streaming TV services like DirectTV Now and Sling have free 1 or 2 week free trial period. You can use these free trial periods if you want to watch NBA finals only . Or you can pay for 1 month and cancel after finals are over.

If you want to stream any sports games, like livesoft's son, an easy place to start is Reddit. Google "Reddit stream NBA", and you will get there. Hook your PC up to the TV and you are good to go. It is not above board though.

I listen to it on the radio via my laptop.

Doing so brings back fond memories of listening to sports programming on the radio with my Dad when I was a kid. Also allows me to be productive at the same time (TV does not).

You could do this, or you could go to a restaurant/bar with TVs and order a coke with 10 refills.

But, probably not the cheapest. This is one of those you can have 2 of the 3, but not all 3 deals. :happy

There're a couple of playoff games left then onto the finals which will be shown on ABC, a free channel.

Very concerning. It means you have no idea what sites your son goes to and have no idea what he does with his computer.

I guess I should have said "cheap" and not "cheapest". I'd rather not watch at a sports bar. And plus once I factor in time and gas, $10 / month is going to be cheaper.

I don't have cable, or even decent streaming because of a puny Internet connection. But at now that we're at the finals I can watch them on ABC for free via the antenna on our roof. Go Cavs!

I would knockout a hotdog vendor + tie him up in a closet. Put on his uniform + ID to make out that I"m him. Watch the game in person while making a few $$ plus free dinner. :sharebeer

A little late but this still applies for all sports: google NBA Reddit Streams or NFL or UFC or NHL etc

SlingTV is only $20/month with no long term contract. Works great through a Roku.

Find a friend/family member who likes and trusts you and has DirecTV. Ask for their login info. Download the TNT and ESPN apps on whatever streaming device you have. Login. Stream live. That's what I do. #ThanksDad

For legal options, look at the streaming services like Hulu, Directv who have trials. This is a nice comparison site

Agree, Sling Orange would be cheapest if you don’t want to try to juggle free trials.

I don't have cable or any of the live TV streaming services (just regular Xfinity internet), but it seems like you can watch the NBA Finals since they will be on ABC, not ESPN.

Would an HD antenna like Leaf work? Seems like the playoffs are on local TV.

Had one a few years ago and some channels worked great. Location to satellite and weather were factors though.

I would be nowhere near the person I am today if I was worried about what my parents thought about the sites I visit on my computer. I certainly wouldn’t have been allowed on Internet chatrooms when I was 13 where I could discuss Linux and technology and blend in like anyone else; “on the internet no one knows you’re a dog”

Oh, and livesoft’s son isn’t a minor.

No. But for $10 / month for 3 months, DirectTVNow is working well.

Cut the cord two+ years ago. We have had it easy because both my parents and in laws still have cable and they are kind enough to share their account info. With a roku/apple tv/smart tv with that log in you can access essentially any channel they have, because every major station has their own app. Basic tv just get an antenna on amazon (don't need the most expensive but don't get the cheapest). Last nights game was more clear than my old direct tv/all cable companies.

So if you have a friend/family member who is kind and willing to give you their info you are set. It doesn't affect their viewing/costs/anything at all.

Unfortunately the refs last night did not have the same clarity as I did with my antenna because they blew that game!

I was overseas for Rockets vs Warriors Game 7, my best/cheapest option was to watch the game on my laptop on NBA.com for $7.
