Sounds like a retirement punch-out and a new beginning :D Welcome to the class! We wish you all the best in this wonderful new path you've laid out for us, the wind at your back and the open road ahead of you 8-)

January 3 - it’s been exactly one year since I walked in and signed my paperwork and retired from my position of 36-1/2 years. Still hasn’t completely sunk in.
It’s taken me a lot of years, but I’ve come around to this: If you’re dumb, surround yourself with smart people. And if you’re smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you.

Well, when it sinks in, could you please let us know if you ever figured out why there's a 20-pound frozen turkey up in the light grid? :D

It was a trial run to find out how long it would take to thaw, in preparation for Thanksgiving dinner. Dana didn't want to catch [grief] from her mom for messing up the family Thanksgiving. It didn't work. After dripping water down on the anchors, the turkey fell out of the light grid on to the anchor desk with a loud, very wet *plop*.

Well, you did ask...

It's 24 pounds.

(I had read the tag line often enough without bothering to figure out what I recognized it from.)

Speaking of non-sequiturs, I retired at 55, if you want to include that in an update of the list at some point.

I don't believe I posted this. Officially retired as of september 30, 2017! Very happy now, less stress, more time with family, especially more time to ensure finances are in order (they are)!

I was just browsing around Bogleheads and discovered this roll call page - you can add me to the list. Retired at age 58 on September 1, 2017. I haven't been an official member for very long although I have been following the investment principles of index investing for the past 25 years. If I could give my children one piece of advice, it would be to join this forum - the knowledge and wisdom I have found here has been invaluable. I wish I would have discovered it a long time ago!

Welcome to the Awesome Retirement Class of 2017!
It's been almost a year now - have you figured out what to do in retirement?

Good advice! Yes, the "knowledge and wisdom" we find here is certainly invaluable - we even learn how to catch mice in the attic, cook oatmeal with Dr. Pepper, and whiten our teeth :D

Figuring out what to do in retirement is an ongoing, evolving process. I exercise a lot, I read a lot, and I am certainly happy to be done with the rat race, but I don't feel like I am making the most of it yet. My DW is 4 years younger, just started a new career as a nurse practitioner, and intends to work for 10-15 more years. The challenge I am facing is to learn how to enjoy traveling without her... to overcome the loneliness I would almost certainly feel if I were to leave for extended camping trips, or to go on the long hikes I have been dreaming of for so many years. I am planning to do about 300 miles (30 days) of the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire and Maine starting in late July... we will see how well that works out. "Man plans, God laughs"! And you know what... if I searched this forum, I'll bet I could find several people in similar situations who have probably already shared loads of helpful advice.

I retired May, 2017. Only regret is that I had gotten out a few years sooner. I've found it doesn't take as much money as I thought. Between SS and this pension I have yet to touch IRA monies. In 2017 travelled 60 days and this year about 34 days thus far.
