Been re-watching a bunch of my favorites from years gone by. Casablanca, African Queen, Lost Horizon, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc..

One that I hadn't seen in over 30 years was The Wages of Fear.

From the online description: "In a decrepit village in South America, four men are hired to transport an urgent nitroglycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe. During their task, a tense rivalry develops between the sets of drivers and it may result in death."

Forgot how atmospheric and tense it is. You can practically taste the dust and smell the fear. Great stuff.

That was my FIRST foreign movie and it was quite excellent.

Frantz, a French WWI-aftermath film. Like all foreign movies, hard but good to swallow as an American. Cinematically beautiful, if you're into that.

We see a lot of movies and hardly any earn a strong recommendation. The Death of Stalin is an exception. Brilliant! While it’s funny, I don’t consider it a comedy. I look at it like without the laughs, it would make one catatonically depressed about humanity. Isle of Dogs was a lot of fun. I found Billboards a cliche and all over the place. The ending was completely incongruous. I won’t say why so I don’t spoil it. Black Panther? Meh. There’s always the classics on dvd or streaming, thank goodness.

Just seen The Quiet Place. I like horror movies. Wife + cousin really liked it. I gave it a 5. Not that impressed. Different type of horror movie though. You may differ from me.

Personal Shopper

A highly focused personal shopper cruises around Paris on her
motorcycle taking care of the shopping needs of her wealthy
celebrity employer. She is constantly texting and spending more
time with her phone than with any human being.
The personal shopper, Maureen(played by Kristen Stewart), is
obsessed with trying to contact her dead twin brother and is getting
anonymous texts from someone who knows her every move. 8/10

Faces Places. I highly recommend _buying_ this movie. It's cheaper than Ambien, and it lasts much longer.

Agree. Very good movie although a couple of the (possibly) supernatural plot twists lost me. I've only seen a couple of her films but Stewart is an exceptional actress.

One thing I noted in this film and a couple others I've watched recently is that texts and info on computer screens almost becomes another "voice"/presence in the film. Had to sit closer to the TV to read the darn things. :happy

I started to mention in my review that the viewer has to play close attention to
certain parts of the movie to figure out what is going on---even then,as you said,
when it comes to the supernatural elements, it was difficult to discern if it was
real or just her imagination.

Yes, and that ambiguity, to me (and it sounds to you as well), was an aspect of the film that I found interesting.

I, Tonya - somehow managed to be very sad and hilarious at the same time, loved and was saddened by it. Great! I will probably watch it again.

Lady Bird - good coming of age movie, but not something I need to watch again

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - the thing about this movie for me is it really emphasized small town living where you can vehemently disagree/argue with someone and maybe even hate them but if they became sick you'd bring them food and help them. Just tons of grey areas in this movie; I liked and disliked all the characters at times and that tension makes it so compelling. Plus the scenery made me nostalgic and homesick. I will watch it again.

I think Homeland is one of the all time greats. Unfortunately Season 2 is pretty much panned by everybody, but it is outstanding after that.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) with Kenneth Branagh as Poirot

Of course there is only one Poirot, David Suchet. Never-the-less, this production got the mustache correct, if one goes by Agatha Christie's writings.

The acting for the main characters was quite good. The plot is, of course, Dame Agatha's and is one of her best. The movie did not, thankfully, try to improve on it, other than perhaps, a dramatic soliloquy or two for the actors to show their chops above and beyond filling out the plot.

One quibble, and I guess a big one: This is one of those recent movies with sweeping, grandiose, majestic scenery and action sequences, all of which is CGI. The recent CGI technology, although a big advance over earlier technology, has a certain synthetic look that jumps out at me. I find it distracting. Perhaps I'm just being pedantic!

All told, it was an enjoyable movie that I recommend.
I thought it was quite a bit better than I had expected. I feared a tedious CGI-fest, but that aspect turned out to be ignorable for me.
I agree it was an enjoyable movie.

I highly recommend an old classic French musical comedy called "Le Million" directed by Rene Clair. It's basically the story of the search and chase for a winning misplaced lottery ticket, but it's so much more. Director Rene Clair (who went on the direct American films like "And Then There Were None" and "He Married a Witch") had directed silent films, and he, at first, frankly didn't like the coming of sound. But since talkies were the new thing and the future, he decided rather than just have filmed stage productions like some early talkies with static cameras and lots of dialogue, that he would find innovative ways of using sound while trying to keep finding new ways of visual means as well. And did he ever! This film is at the nexus of silent films and talkies, and Charlie Chaplin, The Marx Brothers (especially in "A Night the Opera") and early sound musicals by the likes of masters like Rouben Mamoulian and Ernst Lubitsch were obviously and on the record to being influenced by this film. It's delightful, funny and visually and aurally, with some pretty music, a lot of fun, too! A perfect first foreign film for those not used to black and white or foreign films as well.

Just took the time to watch the preview for that movie. Think I'll rent it this weekend.

The last one I watched was All The Money In The World. It was alright, nothing great. I felt like the older and younger characters were a cross between myself. The older character saying he doesn't have the money to spare, when he's one of the richest men around. He's not kidding with his boglehead ways :greedy

Nothing on television of interest last night and had access to "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri." It was very well done, Frances Dormand deserved her Academy Award, Woody Harrelson was excellent, and the movie was very engaging even though it did have some scenes that took liberty with likely reality, even in a small town. If offended by F-bombs, do not watch. Would rate as a 9/10.

I generally am not into musicals, but my wife likes them. So, we decided to watch it. It really was enjoyable. No violence, foul language, and just a good wholesome movie. Good family entertainment.

Now watching the series Endeavour. This is a prequel to the Inspector Morse series. There is also a sequel: Inspecgor Lewis.

The story timeline goes like this:
  1. Endeavour has DI Thursday with sidekick DC Endeavour Morse.
  2. Inspector Morse has DCI Morse with sidekick DS Robert Lewis.
  3. Inspector Lewis has DI Lewis with sidekick DS James Hathaway.
I finished number 2 some time ago.
I just finished number 3.
I just found number 1 and am now watching it.

Interesting facts:
Number 1 has a character named DC Strange. Number 3 has Superintendent Strange, who now outranks Lewis.
Hathaway is played by Lawrence Fox, a nephew of Edward Fox who played The Jackal in the The Day of the Jackal.

Lawrence Fox (DS Hathaway):

Edward Fox (The Jackal):

I saw Isle of Dogs and A Quiet Place last week.

Isle of Dogs I would give 2 out of 4 stars. If you're a Wes Anderson fanatic, I'm sure you'll love it. I enjoyed his first 2 movies (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore) but since then I've thought they've been meh at best (Life Aquatic, Royal Tenenbaums, Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel). For me, this is another meh. The stop motion cinematography is beautiful though.

A Quiet Place. I'm giving it 3.5 out of 4 stars. Enjoyable thriller with mild horror element. Distinctive backstory which creates a great audioscape for the movie. I was definitely on the edge of my seat for much of it. For sure there are some plot holes, but who really cares?

I agree. Laughable, really. Just so much stupid stuff. Maybe the worst was the grounded boat that the soldiers took refuge in, and when it started to float, they somehow decided that ONE guy getting off would mean the difference between it floating or not; a big steel boat weighing many tons. Many other similar idiocies. I must say though, visually it was pretty stunning.

I watched the Isle of Dogs today. I really liked the movie a lot. It is nice to see some intelligent animation as opposed to the usual Disney drech.

There was so much humor throughout the animation.

It is not as good as the Studio Ghibli animation or storytelling but rather good.

I thought it was terrible too, for other reasons. It didn't tell any compelling story. There should have been at least a plot and much more character development. Yes, it was visually stunning, but also terribly boring.

Just came back from this. I did not like it nearly as much. And I really disagree on the quality of the "audioscape".

I suppose I should have known better given the title, but I did not expect so much silence in the movie, especially at the beginning. There is a soundtrack, but it was far from compelling. The music, soundtrack and dialog are at least as important as the cinematography to me. I was not impressed by the content of the subtitles, either. Without spoiling the movie, I think this is partly because of the plot, but it also reflects on its relatively low budget.

I almost fell asleep during that first part, and I would probably have walked out if I was seeing it alone. It was a really slow start. The movie got a little better in the second half, but I just don't understand how it is getting so many great reviews. It's as if someone hacked rottentomatoes lately.

There's frequently a documentary on PBS paralleling some big movie release, and it's often better, and this time is no exception. Can't recall the one about Dunkirk (Nova maybe ?) but check it out.

I do not remember the title of the movie, but it was about the 3 US soldiers beating up a terrorist on a train from Brussels to Paris. My wife and I liked it. My lasting impression was to sit through 15 minutes of advertising, that was blasting at us. The same advertising which we see on TV, but here we could not change channel or reduce loudness. I had the advantage though that I could remove my hearing aids to be able to live through it.

Have to agree, just watched that this weekend. Very entertaining.

We watched The Shape of Water last night and while it was enjoyable I'm not sure why it won so many awards. The ending seemed very predictable and rushed.

Aquarius (2016, not rated). I was looking to see if Netflix had anything with Sonia Braga in it, and this came up. Very low key, slice-of-life film making where the actors all look like people instead of movie stars. If you are feeling overstimulated or hyperstimulated by too many action movies, this is a good antidote. It would be interesting to pair this with Bye Bye Brazil (1979) but that is no longer streaming on Netflix.

Saw Chappaquiddick yesterday. I give it 3 stars out of 4. I was born after the incident so have no memory of it nor of its impact on Ted Kennedy's future political career. So I went in as a pretty blank slate. The guy who plays Ted Kennedy does a great job.

I went to see Black Panther on Tuesday night. $5 on Tuesday nights. It was good but I am not sure what all of the hype is about.

We watched “Coco” last night with our 7-year old. We all liked the movie.

Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance

It was a very interesting 1972 Japanese samurai movie.

We watched Baby Driver last night. It kept our attention throughout and is entertaining if you don't overthink it.

The dynamic between the movie's protagonist and his sweetheart was a nod to a noir/genre I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I liked the vibe of it. Maybe someone else who has seen it can help me place it.

Some thoughts on recent viewings if they're a help -

- Wind River an excellent, very atmospheric drama now on Netflix

- Thor Ragnaroc: Somewhat different spin on the standard made it fun

- Justice League: Boring

- I Tonya: Wife's pick but turned out to be much better than I expected. Great soundtrack and Allison Janney was brilliant.

- Baby Driver. Better and more nuanced than the title and promo had me think. Also a great soundtrack[/list]

You Were Never Really Here. A stylish thriller most notable for the performance by Joaquin Phoenix. The story is brutal and sordid, and not terribly original. It's worth seeing, but I hesitate to recommend it to others.
