52 oz, the new orange juice size?

Post by squirm » Sun Apr 15, 2018 12:33 pm

I bought bacon the other day, 12 oz. Coffee has been 13 oz. It is even better when they raise prices and reduce the size. When they start selling eggs and golf balls in 10 packs I am really going to get concerned.

Get a juice squeezer. I don't know if it will save you money but it will taste better and you won't feel bad about getting ripped off.

Better yet, eat whole fruit = better taste, better nutrition (e.g. fiber), less cost. Or make a smoothie.

Instead of raising prices they simply give you less. Even tuna cans are now 5oz. Pretty sad.

Have you seen the Cheerios 8.9 oz box? It belongs in a friggin doll house.

We (the collective "we," not you and I specifically) are the cause of all this downsizing. It's what consumers often prefer (versus price increases) when voting with their dollars. It has to be significantly preferred, in fact, because size changes are expensive.

This seems to fall into the actionless rant category. If evil corporate America is keeping you down you can stop buying his orange juice. Or cut back from a 12 oz glass of juice to an 8 oz glass of juice.

I don't typically buy orange juice--if I'm going to drink a ton of empty carbs, I'd rather have nine 12oz beers (average 6g carbs per quality craft) than one 8oz glass of OJ (52g carbs)--but I do see this downsizing across the board. As has been previously mentioned, bacon is the big one, where the price has doubled AND the size has dropped by 25%, and center-cut bacon is now like $6 for 8oz. I now only buy bacon at Costco. Hell I already make my own coffee, beer, and cheese, may as well start curing bacon too.

It goes along with the 5.2 Oz yogurts, less product, same or higher cost.

Now if I go to the pub and ask for a pint and they come back with a 12 Oz glass, look out!!

Bob, you're in my neck of the woods, just head out my way and I'll make sure you get a proper pour! Currently on draft: Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter and Coronado Stingray IPA. Next up: Dragonstooth Imperial Oatmeal Stout and 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die! IPA.

That said, I do Tulips instead of Shakers (tastes better), so the standard pour is about 14 oz, purely due to the size of the glass. But 4 glasses costs the same $0 as one does, so you don't actually lose out.

Do people still drink OJ? I though Katie Couric killed the market during a "Today" episode when she commented about diluting her kids' OJ with water.

I'm patiently awaiting the day when the regular cereal box is replaced by the single serve boxes.

I don't buy OJ. on the rare occassions when I want to drink it, I buy some oranges and do it myself. I miss the days of going to the grovestand and just buying a gallon of fresh squeezed. Not from concentrate, never frozen, never pasteurized. And I actually prefer tangerine juice to orange juice.

At least one local bar I go to gives 13oz pours. At least they don't call it a "pint". But cans = 12 oz and a draft beer is 13oz?

Focus on the price per ounce.

That's not clear to me. I prefer buying things that last, but in many cases all there is is made in China junk. I would pay more for durable stuff. I can only assume the profit margins are higher on junk.
