Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I'm 48 and 60% stocks/40% bonds but not because I'm using age minus 10 in bonds
It just fits my current situation

Age minus 13 in bonds. Investment portfolio only, SS and pension excluded from the calculation.
Core Four w/ nominal bonds & TIPS. Refi Rampage: Purchase: 3.875% 30 -> R1 3% 20 -> R2 2.375% 15 -> R3 1.99% 15 -> R4 1.875% 15
Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I did at one time use this guideline. I think it's good pre-retirement.
In retirement not so much. Circumstances vary a lot. For example if your needs are met and you are really managing a bequest a bit more growth is likely to work out better.

Me 62 Retired, DW 59
45/55 Stocks/Bonds and Stable Value
I consider Stable Value similar to bonds at 3.25-3.5% return without interest rate risk.
Closer to age-5 in fixed income
After start of SS (FRA or later) and Pensions, will go to 50/50

I'm Age - 15.
Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
Currently age bonds at 58 years old. Conservatively I do not count expected pension, only invested money.
If I added my expected pension value to my bond and stable value investments I would be age + 15 in bonds. I sleep well at night.

Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I think for my last 20 working years I had 6 months post-tax income in cash. Yes, it was our emergency fund. By the time I retired it was a small part of our portfolio.
I cannot remember when I started, but as my wife neared retirement, I was moving some equity savings into bonds. Pensions and social security easily cover all of our non-discretionary expenses. We have about 12 years of discretionary expenses in bonds.

Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I am currently - age 60 and 50/50. But it's only happenstance. IPS states I will remain at 50/50 until age 70.
Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
Age 57, fixed income 44 or 45%.
I don't follow age - X in bonds. I follow keep in bonds what you cannot afford to lose a la Taylor Larimore. I have a little more in bonds than I need to live on until SS at 70yo. The question is what I will do if the markets tank. I have some extra in fixed income. But I may be reluctant to buy equities in a falling market if it takes me below the amount I need to bridge to SS.
If equities continue to climb from here I will consider buying more bonds.
I am ok with 50-55% in equities. Not too worried about missing out on equity appreciation. Am reluctant to have to go back to work because of financial necessity.

60/40 stocks/bonds
I plan to stick with age minus 20 in bonds, and only changing my AA once a decade. I plan to be 50/50 in my 70s and 40/60 in my 80s. I haven't yet decided what my AA will be if I make it into my 90s.

Age -10 in bonds by accident of age. I think in fractions or odds. 1/3 bonds. Probably stay that way for quite some time.

What’s the formula with =TODAY() that increments 1/365th of a percent each day?llama wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2017 1:40 amWe used to do exactly this as well until our average age hit 40. Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I've gone from age -15 in bonds to age in bonds over the last 5 years. I've found myself becoming increasingly more conservative after mulling over hundreds, maybe thousands, of threads on this site. For me, I've become to realize I have less need to take on the additional risk. Of course when we are talking about changing an AA by 10-15% this isn't a tremendous shift in risk!
I like age - 10 in general. It's simple!

Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I am age-16 in bonds. I probably will be at my current bond % for 20 years or more, so I anticipate answering "age - 35" in the future versions of this question.

Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
Just two years of expenses in bonds is way aggressive for me. What I would like my fairly aggressive 70-30 to mean is, the ability to cover expected expenses until age 70 when I become an artist and draw my SS, after which expenses are covered. I may sell some equities if it seems advantageous but hopefully will never be forced to do so in a down market.

Age - 20 in bonds which is a little more aggressive than our IPS calls for, mostly being lazy about rebalancing, working towards retirement threshold at 50/50. Note, I count CDs and Treasury Bills as bonds.

Re: Anybody else Age - 10 in bonds, rest in stocks
I just turned 49 in Dec and have 80/20 AA. I plan to keep that allocation until I retire at age 65 or 67. I feel like I can be a bit more aggressive since I have a guaranteed military pension (since 2007). Fingers crossed I can average 6.5% return on Roth IRA and 401k so that between them and pension I should be just fine. Social Security will be a bonus!

49 years old, no pension, have been 80/20 for some time now, currently gliding to 75/25 using new contributions. Probably about halfway there at the moment.
