The Post: enjoyable but my expectations were even higher. I was not blown away by it.

Early man: Not great. I also had high expectations of Nick Park. It was a bit predictable and formulaic.

The Breadwinner

An exceptional animated film set in Afghanistan, just before the
American attacks against the Taliban in 2001. After her father is
imprisoned by the Taliban, a strong willed young girl disguises
herself as a boy to help support her mother and two siblings.
Juxtaposed are stories from Afghanistan folklore that relate to
the characters in the film.
Nominated for Best Animated Picture of 2017.

We recently saw the best movie of the year...Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri.

Frances McDormand (oscar winner 20 years ago for fargo) is wonderful as the grieving, driven, crazed mother of a teenage daughter who had been raped and murdered in this small town. Buys space on billboards when police make no progress in solving the crime to put pressure on the town. Woody harrison, the police chief, turns out to be a hero of sorts.

Coen brothers production ultimately deals with her efforts and the ability of humans to gain redemption when they do the right thing.

Wonder which was great. Latest Star Wars which was a series of unconnected vignettes and of little interest.
The Post which was very good, but anything with Meryl is fine with me.

This movie is not a Coen brothers production. It was written and directed by Martin McDonagh. In fact, I can find no association other than the fact that one of the brothers is married to the star.

Good movie.

The Post - enjoyable but could have been better. Wish they had a list. As many such movies do , what some of these people involved are doing who were connected to watergate.
3 Billboards - went with great expectations. Other than McDedermit who is always excellent, the storyline was disappointing. But a lot of good acting.
Phantom Thread - insipid.

“Loving Vincent”

The story of Van Gogh - “filmed” as if every scene was a painting of his.

Incredible movie - felt more like an experience to be honest. Loved it.

My wife and I watched this film tonight, streamed on Netflix. Quite good and a jarring reminder of what life must’ve been like there at that time.

Watched L.A. Confidential for the first time again in many, many years. What a well-done movie. The redemption stories of Vincennes, Exley, and White are woven together perfectly. Period detail is fantastic. Supporting performances are outstanding (Basinger's obviously, but more, too).

I just rewatched Thor: Ragnarok since my movie theater experience sucked (first movie in a theater since Doctor Strange, I hate theaters). It was okay the first time but much more enjoyable from the comfort of my sofa! "Are you Thor, God of Hammers?" 8-)

One of the best movies I've ever watched.
Just watched this today per your advice - very good!! My daughter the movie buff tipped me off to 2 more movies based on the authors books (Taylor Sheridan). "Hell or High Water". And "Sicario". Gonna give them a try too.

I, Tonya

A version of Tonya Harding's life that at times comes
across as a parody. According to the movie her life
was filled with crude, violent, vulgar, and manipulative
people. Her mother is portrayed in an extremely negative
light.
In the midst of such an unloving and crass environment,
Tonya found validation and a sense of self worth through
figure skating, a sport at which she excelled from early
childhood. The only person that seemed to offer her kindness
and encouragement was her skating coach.
Not a "feel good" movie but a blunt portrait of the rough-hewn
skater.

Murder on the Orient express, on 4K Blu ray. Greatly enjoyed the cinematics. The story dragged on a little bit. I didn't remember the book that I read as a teenager, fortunately, so there was still an element of surprise.

Dunkirk - I had watched the first 20 minutes on the plane back from Mexico earlier this year. I rewatched the first 20, and finished yesterday flying back from SoCal. Enjoyable movie, not quite up to Saving Private Ryan standards, but a nice follow up to Darkest Hour, the Churchill film which included the behind the scenes organization of the evacuation.

Late last week, I ordered Bladerunner 2049 off OnDemand. Visually stunning, in sync with the original. Maybe would have been better in the theater: I watched over two nights, and fell asleep during the viewing both nights. :(

On Body and Soul, which was nominated this year for Best Foreign Film. It is from Hungary and very original. About 2 people who work in a slaughterhouse and discover they have the same dreams at night. I enjoyed it very much. It is on Netflix.

Darkest Hour from Redbox. I must admit an interest in Churchill since I visited his childhood home 2 years ago. This movie is a compliment to Dunkirk. Somehow, Dunkirk left out Churchill in his movie.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. 2017

From wiki: a 2017 American legal drama film written and directed by Dan Gilroy. The film stars Denzel Washington, Colin Farrell, and Carmen Ejogo. The plot centers around the life of an idealistic defense lawyer (Washington) who finds himself in a tumultuous series of events that lead to a personal crisis and the necessity for extreme action.

Be forewarned I think it was panned by critics and many found it a mess but I really liked the film. Denzel turns in a really fine performance and really embodies this character. An Oscar worthy performance for sure. The film poses a bunch of moral/ethical questions which I think Bogleheads might find interesting. The film also highlights the differences between generations.

I don’t think it was coen brothers.

DW and I rented last night. We were both looking forward to it given previews and nominations. Cast looked phenomenal. Turns out we were both underwhelmed.

If I had to put a finger on it, it didn’t really work as a comedy, as it mostly wasn’t and it seemed kind of pointless and quirky as a drama. The first 1/3 had some good laughs and showed promise, but it turned more serious. There really wasn’t a plot, the events somewhat random and implausible and I found it hard to really relate to some of the characters. Those are usually elements of good drama. Now you don’t need those for a comedy but to us it ceased to be a comedy part of he way through.

Darkest Hour (2017) Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill facing his doubts and fears with the fall of Belgium and France and the expected imminent invasion of Britain. Very well done and a most interesting chapter in history. Recommended.

Kin-Dza-Dza!

Reportedly a critique of Soviet society, but actually seems to work well as a critique of any human society that I am at all familiar with.

Anyway, a thoroughly delightful film, even without getting the in-jokes.

I think part of it was given the previews, cast and accolades we had really high expectations that weren’t met. If we had just stumbled upon not ever hearing of it, probably would have thought it was interesting in its own quirky sort of way.

There were quite a few things in the plot line that just struck me as completely ridiculous in the context of a drama. Viewed as a comedy it would not be a big deal, except that I rarely laughed at all past the first 1/3 of the movie.

Other movies recently viewed on TV

Get Out: kind of a different kind of suspense/sci-fi. It mostly worked. OK but not great.

Nocturnal Animals: Pretty Good. I enjoyed the embedded Novel plot/story of the movie. The present day aspect of the plot was kind of pointless.

Allies: I liked this one. You knew where this one was going from the start ( and given previews) yet it still worked.

"Lady Bird" was somewhat entertaining but when it was over, we asked ourselves what was that about? Again, just like the "Billboard ...." film I felt it was over-hyped. Maybe I'm getting too old and cynical.

The Churchill film, "Darkest Hour" on Netflix, was very well-done and lived up to its good reviews.

"The Looming Tower" series on Hulu is very good and realistic.

"Seven Seconds" on Netflix started well but the second half of the series was too much a soap opera with a poor ending.

Yesterday I have attended an advanced showing of the film followed by a discussion with the director Armando Iannucci. This is a fantastic film, the best one I've seen in years.

I did enjoy it but wouldn't say it was flawless. As a farce about the struggle for power in the Politburo after the death of Stalin it definitely worked. Rather than being a broad comedy it is a farce focused on the banality of evil and the egos of powerful elderly men.

Great performances by almost all of the cast. And using their native British or American accents plays up the comedic aspects.

One I would definitely watch again.

Two documentaries for sea lovers on Netflix:

Mission Blue - Describes the life and work of Silvia Earle, pioneering marine scientist and diver, as well as her observations on ocean ecology from decades of work and involvement with the sea.

Chasing Coral - Describes a project to document (mostly via time-lapse video) coral bleaching events around the world. Interesting for the people and technical challenges involved, basic descriptions of the biology of corals, and for documenting the magnitude of some very recent coral bleaching events.
