Personally, I think this is a wise move.

Heading towards -1000 for the day again, or at least on course. Saddle up!

oversized e-fund cash unwinding [i know, i know] ...
i'll likely wait until i get paid next before buying, unless we see another mini-freefall again. i was planning on building up my cash reserves again, but looks like Mr. Market may be throwing another tantrum.

Casual announcement of tariffs is apparently having an effect today .

Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
I'd love to meet that person/persons who's currently long, but then reads that headline - 10% tariff on steel announced, then quickly panics and that's what did it for them - that's what made them hit that sell button. I also wonder if 5-10 years from then, they'll still be recounting the story at dinner parties about how it was announced a 10% aluminum tariff, and they knew that was the time to sell.

Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
It is more likely they are more worried about retaliatory tariffs that will ignite trade wars.
So what they are more worried about is :
"The great trade wars of 2018 and the break down in global trade... ah, I remember it well.. it all started because of those darn aluminum and steel tariffs didn't they?"
- 30 years from now Bligh
I, of course, have no idea what is going to happen.. but I believe the market selloff is due to the worry over the response to the tariffs, and the possibility of kicking off a tit-for-tat trade war with China because of them.
Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
Well looks like the market is finally having a down day near when I'm getting paid..... I get paid tomorrow though so it's likely to be back up.
Not that it really matters anyways (for me).

It was probably a computer belonging to some hedge fund programmed to sell in proportion to "tariff" mentions on CNBC.azanon wrote: ↑Thu Mar 01, 2018 2:32 pm I'd love to meet that person/persons who's currently long, but then reads that headline - 10% tariff on steel announced, then quickly panics and that's what did it for them - that's what made them hit that sell button. Re: U.S. stocks in freefall
I started receiving emails from a woman who apparently has her husband's email wrong a few months ago although she cc's his presumambly correct email address too. I get forwarded endless 'hot stock tips' from Zacks etc plus notifications when she trades. I noticed buying this morning and selling this afternoon. As in, buy high, sell low especially at the slightest hint of volatility. This seems to be a pattern with this person and it's been accelerating. It's not an account I use often, plus never know if it's some sort of elaborate phishing scam so I don't tell her about her error.
In the back of my mind I've been having this feeling that maybe it's a bad overall market signal if someone who takes advice like that, trades like that, and doesn't realize she's forwarding this stuff to one wrong address is becoming ever more frenetic in her trades and forwarded advice articles. Of course I realize it's random chance but it's interesting to see how gamblers function, which is what many, many people do in the market.

I mean we already did/lived this in 2016, actually on this very same day... so not sure what all the hype is this time minus perhaps more media coverage?bligh wrote: ↑Thu Mar 01, 2018 2:55 pm

I bought yesterday, so naturally the market is down today. Sorry guys, I’ll try not to do it again.

No worries, Miss Market is doing exactly what she is supposed to do, go down AFTER you buy.
The good news, she will come back up.

I have a copy of Market Factors for Hedge Funds - Windows 10 edition. Glad Tariff was triggered.

Buying the latest dip

Let's leave politics out of it as usual (you either laugh or cry), the latest dip, call it the "Trade War Dip", certainly looks like a buying opportunity to me...

Depending on your perspective (and time horizon), everyday is a good day to invest...
I added some of Buffett's company yesterday and looks like it will dip lower today. oh well.

Re: Buying the latest dip
It is Friday, so even if today drops enough, I suggest waiting to see what happens next week. But I've been wrong before, too.
OTOH, I just made my Roth IRA contribution for 2018 ....
But Vanguard Total Stock Market will be down about 5% since the morning of February 27th, so maybe I should rebalance.

LOL
It's times like these that make me want to buy total market ETFs instead of the funds.

Just made the final contribution to my 2018 IRA, so I'm maxed for the year.
The dip, while nice, really has no bearing on my investment strategy.

I’ll admit I moved things around and dumped a few $1K in at the open; maxed my backdoor Roth and added to taxable. Oops.
Re: Buying the latest dip
Bought international 2/9, 2/28, and 3/1, and I'm hoping my wife will give her blessing for another crack at it today. Won't impact things too significantly, as it's really only a correction (and barely one, at that); however, it's nice to see a mini-plunge every once in a while.

Good thing my horizon is 30 years and I don't care bout the next few weeks (or years).

Re: Buying the latest dip
If it is a "dip" then you must buy.
But, if it is a "dip" that is a precursor to a "correction" then you must wait to buy and then buy heartedly.

EDIT: I like it because it reinforces the mind-set of saving/investing for long-term growth, and that savings rate and being in the market are the biggest factors to success. Really takes the edge off any "paralysis" thoughts or counter-productive behaviors.

Time in the market not timing the market. So...you should have invested all your money well before you were born. So...since you can't do that you should invest today.

Re: Buying the latest dip
You say you want to leave politics out of it but then you give the dip a politically-driven name.
With the market dropping again today (at least so far) it does look like its time to buy for me simply by re-balancing a bit.

I'm staying the course, but the colleague I mentioned above is one of the sharpest guys in our firm, thinks we will see the dow around 14,000 by 2020.
Re: Buying the latest dip
I chuckle to myself when I get “Down drops ____ points!” updates from CNBC. The market, according to a friend on Wall Street, is a bunch of day to day BS that ultimately goes up so whatever.Darth Xanadu wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 11:34 amAnd I'm guessing the article has also convinced you not to sweat that fact much at all, am I right?
After the last mini “crash”, a friend was freaking out and I politely showed her how much I was up despite investing at the literal “peak” last March (I.e that “peak” still a better time to buy than after “the crash”
Time in, not timing, invest money you don’t need short term, go on with life. Happy Friday!
[No, this volatility has not caused panic for me. I find it amusing. Aluminum tariffs! Idk what that means but sell sell sell that sounds bad! Bitcoin to the rescue!]

Well, today is payday and that means a deferred comp. contribution. I guess I'm buying the dip. Of course, I'd also be buying if it were an all time high, so...

My bonus money should have gone in this week but it didn’t. I think my employer is being lazy and will send it with my regular paycheck money next week. Therefore I feel confident the market will be back up by next Tuesday or Wednesday. Letting you all know so you can relax.
