Selling one owner car. Give new owner service records?

Post by gypsyman » Mon Jan 15, 2018 9:32 pm

I bought my 2010 Prius brand new. All service had been done exclusively at the Toyota dealer. I have a folder that contains copies of every service and repair from day one. When I sell it and advertise these facts, do I let they new owner view the service copies or give the copies to them? Any potential issues by letting them have the records?

I see it as adding a discernible value factor to your pricing model. :D

I have always provided service records to the new owner when selling private party. I don't really care what they do with them, but their eyes light up when I bring out the stack of receipts, invoices, and bills.

But whether you keep your receipts or not doesn't add or subtract value to your car.

In your case, there is no potential problems with letting them have them, as they can get them on their own from the dealer.

Service records are definitely a plus. It shows the new owner that the vehicle has been maintained properly. I would and do advertise this in my listing. As a buyer, I would expect to receive the service records with the car. I have no problem with giving them to the new owner.

Giving car history record is a great news for the new owner.

I have always kept a little notebook in my vehicles where I write down the date, mileage and what service action was performed and give this to the next owner. It provides them with the service information without any potential information such as credit card numbers, account numbers, address, phone number, etc.

If the new owner knows where the car was serviced, then the dealer now would have all of that information anyway.

The only things I might mark out is any personal information such as credit card used or home address (if different from current).

I see no harm in providing.

Yes. If I were a potential buyer, this would be a real plus ...

You should make a photo copy of the records and then give them the originals or vice versa. If you become party to a class action lawsuit at some point down the road you will need copies of your service receipts.

I had a 2002 Audi that blew the transmission. Since the trade-in was $5500 and the cost to fix it was $7500 I sold it on ebay for $3700. Two years later I received a notice that i was a part of a class-action lawsuit. I submitted my receipts and about six months later a check for $2700 magically arrived in the mail. That made getting made whole vastly easier.

In another life, when I sold cars, I remember being really impressed by one owner who had all of his service records for his trade-in in plastic sheet protectors in a 3-ring binder.

I've done that since, in my own vehicles -- costs a couple bucks for the protectors, you probably already have a 3-ring binder, and it will return hundreds of dollars ( as will an extremely thorough clean/detail).

Funny, I have 3 ring binders and plastic sheet protectors for each of my vehicles as well. I guess it is kind of a "car guy" thing. :sharebeer

A CarFax report for your Prius will probably show all the dealership service information so even if you don't give the buyer any information, they can always look it up.

being maintained at a dealer does not sound like a selling point to me.
