I don't understand buying stocks for the long run but then being shocked or even nervous when they go up. Why did people buy stocks in the first place? They are supposed to go up most of the time. This bull run has nothing on 1982 - 2000 and is coming after a prolonged period of near zero returns. I will be disappointed if we don't see another 50% before the recession.

The lack of volatility is very unusual, if not the percentage gains. Very, very unusual.

My portfolio generates about the same income from interest and dividends all the time (and maybe goes up gradually) regardless of the market value of the underlying securities.

That's what the portfolio is for, generating income. So I rationalize that I can happily ignore the market, up or down.

Edit: and the companies are adding profits as retained earnings to their balance sheets, and I theoretically own a piece of that, so that's even more of an unseen build-up of cash for me.

And the bonds/stable value/CDs are reinvesting interest as a virtuous cycle of compounding, also a great thing.

So all will be well even with a correction (or even a crash). So I sleep well. Don't worry, be happy.

I’m getting used to the stock market going up. That’s probably a bad thing.
I'm starting to see lots of threads talking about a market "melt up" (is that really a thing?) That is tiring. But my fault, since I can't seem to stop clicking on the damn articles.

VBTLX* was down today, which made things feel normal to me.

Ironically, a huge run-up like this can test your ability to stay-the-course as much as a big downturn.
(At least that's my personal feeling.)

I just wanted to point out while the SP500 is up 21.26%, the dollar has plummeted in value, and most people have their assets denominated in USD.

Viewed from most of the developed world, the SP500 is ~11% 1 yr return, which is normal.

USD:MXN: - 11.74%
USD-EUR: -11.5%
USD-GBP: -9.96%
USD-CAD: -5.74%
USD-AUD: -5.66%

Having corporate profits so high isn't a miracle.
I'm not sure it's a bubble.
But I'm confident it is a symptom of inflation.

These are all rational thoughts. It is important to note, greed and fear are when our plans are tested.

My plan fits my risk tolerance so I just rebalanced in January and I plan to pretty much ignore it until January 2019. After 20 plus years of saving for retirement, I am now 100% confident that the Bogle Model (talked about in his updated version of the Little Book of Common Sense Investing) is the best way to go.

For those of you who have not read the Little Book of Common Sense Investing, the Bogle Model is a static 60/40 all U.S. portfolio using two funds or all in the balanced index fund for life.

Glad you got it off your chest.

No doubt about it! As my bond ratio goes down but my net worth goes up, I question whether I'm ready to rebalance to my subscribed AA or realize 'just a little more' in the gain department!

Megacorp's stock has been on some ridiculous tear. Its one-year growth has been 100%. Of course the guys at the office with large stakes in it are happy. The only investment I have in it are some shares we got through a profit-sharing program years back that have been sitting at Computer Share for years.

Indeed! The DOW broke 25,000, for the first time ever, only 5 days ago, and it's already up 400 points! 26,000+ end of January seems very likely at this rate.
Should be headed for 30k+ by year end--only a nominal 15% increase this year.
Dow 30,000 is starting to look conservative at this point. Winning

Like others on the forum, at times feeling a bit lightheaded with the continuing up market. Noticed that my portfolio has not had a down month since Oct 2016. We know it won't last forever, but will enjoy the party while it lasts.

Yes! Definitely. I hardly paid attention to 2008-2009, even though we were almost totally in stocks in our tax-deferred accounts. That was easy. However, I checked on our balances in May 2017 and it occurred to me that they had grown to a significant amount, and that the markets had been going up for some time. I went from checking the markets and our balances every year or so to checking every day and reading lots of financial articles. Should have ignored them.

I got spooked and moved to 70% cash/bonds and 30% stocks. It has NOT helped me to sleep better at night. I've watched the markets continue to rise while we sit mostly in cash/bonds, and frequently think about how to get back to a better AA for us, which would probably be 80% equities 20% bonds. I'm torn between doing it all at once, gradually, or waiting for a market correction that, by the time it comes, may not bring the indexes back down to the level at which I sold.

What is happening sure does reinforce the importance of being in the market during times like these. It also points out that stress is simply adjustment to change whether it is distress (Adjustment to unwanted events) or eustress (Adjustment to desired events). The current stock market provides some eustress to counter some of the distress in other areas for this investor.

I have 'rebalanced' some of our taxable equity holdings in the last few days by cashing out of some very old mutual funds. The plan is to move the proceeds into the taxable brokerage account. Once there, who knows....but I have a hunch much of it will end up back in equities at some point!

As someone who is 90/10, this is both exciting and concerning at the same time.

Now, on a % basis these 200 pt jumps are as impactful as they were when the DOW was at 6000, but it sure feels the same emotionally.

The Two Pillars holding this country together:

(1) Better than expected economy.
(2) Better than expected stock market.

(3) Massively better corporate tax rate. and ability to bring overseas cash back to 'invest'.

Regardless of how you feel about it....I have to think the tax plan passing has something to do with it. This, in theory, should prop the markets up in 2018.

Kind of goes with (1) above: Consumers have more money in their pockets (bonuses, pay increases, tax cuts, stock market, etc.) to spend, propelling the economy.

"When the market is fearful, be greedy, and when the market is greedy, be fearful."

Paraphrased from Warren Buffett.

I take comfort in that I have about half of our stock and bond investments in bonds. When the market corrects, we will be safer as a result.

I also don't dare go all stocks at this point. This goes against advice from Taylor, Mr. Bogle, and Mr. Buffett. Stay the course, I say. Enjoy a worry-free Saturday! Your portfolio is up and you did almost nothing to enjoy those gains.

Well now we are see maybe as much as a 20% correction. Today is going to be another massive drop. Hope everyone is pleased as punch that we are losing money from our retirement accounts like a hemorrhage. I have seen a50K drop in my investments and retirement account. Now I am not Happy and tired of the market dropping. Can stop any time now.

And you know this how? The market is now where it was 5 weeks ago. Big deal. It's just paper gain and loss. Stop watching your portfolio.

Admiral, Don't mean to argue but my accounts were not 50K higher 5 weeks ago? They are much more down than that.
