Sounds like a retirement punch-out and a new beginning :D Welcome to the class! We wish you all the best in this wonderful new path you've laid out for us, the wind at your back and the open road ahead of you 8-)

January 3 - it’s been exactly one year since I walked in and signed my paperwork and retired from my position of 36-1/2 years. Still hasn’t completely sunk in.

Well, when it sinks in, could you please let us know if you ever figured out why there's a 20-pound frozen turkey up in the light grid? :D

It was a trial run to find out how long it would take to thaw, in preparation for Thanksgiving dinner. Dana didn't want to catch [grief] from her mom for messing up the family Thanksgiving. It didn't work. After dripping water down on the anchors, the turkey fell out of the light grid on to the anchor desk with a loud, very wet *plop*.

Well, you did ask...

It's 24 pounds.

(I had read the tag line often enough without bothering to figure out what I recognized it from.)

Speaking of non-sequiturs, I retired at 55, if you want to include that in an update of the list at some point.

I was just browsing around Bogleheads and discovered this roll call page - you can add me to the list. Retired at age 58 on September 1, 2017. I haven't been an official member for very long although I have been following the investment principles of index investing for the past 25 years. If I could give my children one piece of advice, it would be to join this forum - the knowledge and wisdom I have found here has been invaluable. I wish I would have discovered it a long time ago!

Welcome to the Awesome Retirement Class of 2017!

Good advice! Yes, the "knowledge and wisdom" we find here is certainly invaluable - we even learn how to catch mice in the attic, cook oatmeal with Dr. Pepper, and whiten our teeth :D

Figuring out what to do in retirement is an ongoing, evolving process. I exercise a lot, I read a lot, and I am certainly happy to be done with the rat race, but I don't feel like I am making the most of it yet. My DW is 4 years younger, just started a new career as a nurse practitioner, and intends to work for 10-15 more years. The challenge I am facing is to learn how to enjoy traveling without her... to overcome the loneliness I would almost certainly feel if I were to leave for extended camping trips, or to go on the long hikes I have been dreaming of for so many years. I am planning to do about 300 miles (30 days) of the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire and Maine starting in late July... we will see how well that works out. "Man plans, God laughs"! And you know what... if I searched this forum, I'll bet I could find several people in similar situations who have probably already shared loads of helpful advice.

I retired May, 2017. Only regret is that I had gotten out a few years sooner. I've found it doesn't take as much money as I thought. Between SS and this pension I have yet to touch IRA monies. In 2017 travelled 60 days and this year about 34 days thus far.

jcar - Welcome to this Retirement Class! Sounds like you planned well and are enjoying your retirement.

Where are you travelling, are you a hike up the mountains type or a cruise around type or a walk around the great cities type?

Best wishes for a long happy retirement 8-)

I retired May 31 2017 so far doing well. Net worth actually increase even with DW doing a kitchen make over. but the market has been good so far. Will see how 2018 pans out.

You're lucky with your kitchen make-over, but wait until DW needs new bathrooms and a fabulous new master bedroom suite :D

Thanks for asking. Will be hitting the trail again in early November on a cruise for twenty days. Spent summer training as a lifeguard for a local pool. It was a challenge but fun and a bit of a confidence builder. Finally took a small amount from retirement monies for all of family to make a beach trip. Still feels great to have left working world behind.

Not too well! I did an AT thru-hike in 2002 after I retired from the Army at age 43, but I'm not in the same condition I was in back then. DUH! That stretch from Gorham, NH through the southern portion of Maine is especially brutal... even worse because it was raining so much. Wah, wah, wah!!! I bailed out after about 30 miles and decided to try again a year from now when I hope to have worked myself into better trail shape after the last 15 years of too much time sitting behind a desk! However, I did go do a 50-mile "thru-hike" of Isle Royale National Park a couple weeks later. That was WAY easier than the AT! :D

Glad to be part of this group!

My retirement happened sooner than I had planned due to family issues, but I am doing fine.

Right now I am studying when to take SS, if Roth conversions make sense, Tax implications, eventual RMD's and how all of this plays out. Contrary to conventional wisdom, it looks like taking SS at 62 is that best course for my situation. It looks like it will allow my portfolio to be larger than it would be compared to taking it later, and if I keep my income below the SS tax threshold I can get creative with Roth conversions and stay in a low to no tax bracket.

My portfolio is about 85% IRA's, about 10% Roth's, about 5% Taxable, not counting house, SS, etc.

With my first post I would like to thank the moderators and so many members who spend a lot of time sharing their knowledge and wisdom on this wonderful forum. I have been investing since the mid-90's but mostly with actively managed mutual funds until my retirement, before moving to the 3-fund portfolio + tax-efficient investment strategy after discussions with VG financial planners. I wish I found this forum much sooner !

Retired in October of 2017 @ 59.

Well better now than after you panic and cash out and sell your great retirement fortune  Now, with your retirement fortune stashed in the Three Fund Portfolio, you can enjoy learning about personal investing for retirees from the Bogleheads.

Thank you Miriam2 :happy

My wife and I both retired in 2017 so we had been travelling often since retirement. Our last trip was to Morocco in February and fortunately we got back to the United States before the big lockdown. My near term goal is to learn about Roth conversion - and the very impressive RPM. BTW our liquid portfolio is comprise of approximately 40% taxable, 55% T-IRA, and 5% ROTH.

Hope you took lots of pictures - now you have lots of time to sort through them and make photo books

What do you mean by "RPM"?

As for Roth conversions, post your Q on the main forum to receive more to-the-point suggestions for your particular circumstances. And plug the key words into our search box and you'll pick up many threads on Roth conversions.

Thank you Miriam2 for the very informative and timely article :thumbsup

I am studying the Retiree Portfolio Model (I read that some BHs refer to it as RPM) developed by BH Bigfoot48 to see how it can help me with my Roth conversion considerations - along the line discussed in that article. I will probably be using about 5% of its capability but I wanted to do some homework and ask questions when my study gets to a point of diminishing return :confused

Ok, thanks - we'll need to add that acronym to our wiki abbreviations & acronyms list 8-)
In case there are many BigFoot articles, here is the wiki article on the RPM
