My Christmas Present to You

Post by Taylor Larimore » Sun Dec 24, 2017 9:36 pm

Dear Boglehead:

Seventy-three years ago on Christmas Eve, during the Battle of the Bulge, I was a 20-year old scared paratrooper in a snow-covered foxhole protecting the important transportation town of Bastogne, Belgium.

The Germans had us surrounded and demanded our surrender. Our commander said "Nuts." You can read about it here:

A Freedom Shrine Document

This is my Christmas present to you.

Ostentatious:

General Maxwell Taylor was our commanding general who was with his family in the USA for Christmas like many of the top "brass." General McAuliffe was left in command when the Germans attacked.

Best wishes.

Merry Christmas to you!

What you and all the others who have served our country have provided all of us can't be repaid in simple words. I can't imagine what it was like to be 20 years old in that situation. Sometimes I have a bad day at work where my computer crashes or I have to deliver bad news to a customer and I just think how lucky I am that this is the only issue I have to deal with.

Thank you again for all you've done and will continue to do. I know I would enjoy meeting you and talking about investing, but I think I would enjoy even more the opportunity to talk to you about your life experiences.

Thanks for the gift Taylor. Although you gave it 73 years ago when I did not know your name, it is still one of the best gifts you and your generation gave to my generation. My Dad and his 2 brothers also served in the Pacific theater including Iwo Jima. One of the brothers still lives today although my Dad passed away 3 years ago.

Thank you again for the great link to the story.

Merry Christmas, Taylor. My great-grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge and almost lost his life from wounds suffered in that battle. Thank you serving during that time and sharing your bits of wisdom over the years :)
