2015 and newer Suburban/Yukon XL Owners
We currently have a 2010 Yukon XL, with 140,000+ miles on it. We will be replacing it between now and the next 14 months. I've heard that the current versions have been (or had) transmission issues. In fact, Consumers Report gave the Caddy Escalade (sister to Suburban/Yukon) one of the lowest scores ever for predicated reliability...primarily due to the trans issue.
Is this still a thing? What have you owners experienced first hand?
Thanks

Have you tried searching a Suburban/Yukon owner's group forum? Likely to get more feedback from a group focused specifically on these vehicles.

I've done a little digging, but I figured I'd bounce it off this board and maybe get a less passionate (or bias) view. I like the BH opinions.Pinotage wrote: ↑Tue Dec 12, 2017 4:53 pm Have you tried searching a Suburban/Yukon owner's group forum? I think the new 8-speed transmission had some bug's in the programming that had to be worked out. If you are buying new, such as 2017, I would think you should be fine. I might would be leary of a pre-owned private sale that wouldn't have a warranty.
Re: 2015 and newer Suburban/Yukon XL Owners
Suburbans/Yukons had some issues in somewhat recent years ('08ish?) with excessive engine oil consumption..like an engine with 5K-20K miles on it using a quart(+) of oil between oil changes. GM said it was normal. Lots of folks that paid very good money for the trucks didn't agree. I came across this when looking for a used Suburban-like vehicle about a year ago. Since one will only know if the used vehicle they bought was being sold due to the oil issue after they've had it for a few months, I ended up with a Toyota Sequoia.
I'd guess that issue has been addressed by now(2015+), but consider it when looking into used models.

My dad likes good mpgs. He'd be last person to buy a V8 SUV.
He reserved a rental minivan to cart people and stuff for 1600 mile round trip for work.
Rental place only had suburban, so that's what he got. While most might be happy at this change, he didn't want to get 14 mog the whole way and would have rather had minivan.
However, he was pleasantly surprised.
I think it had he cylinder deactivation and other mpg optimizations... Got 21-22mpg highway!. Not that much worse than a van. He was pleasantly surprised. Impressive for something that big and heavy.
It was fairly recent, so should have been 2015/2016 model.

Re: 2015 and newer Suburban/Yukon XL Owners
I bought a 2014 Tahoe after the 2015s came out for the reasons already mentioned, basically, apprehension about the first year of a new model, although I really liked the newer body style. I was offered a 2015 Suburban XL or a 2014 Tahoe Z71 with 3 seat rows like the Suburban for almost the same price. (the Suburban was new, 4WD and the Z71 had 15K and was, well, a Z71) and I went with the 2014, because it was pre-changes to the model. It's still running fine and it's got 70K. I run Cooper tires for quiet highway ride and good snow traction.

I had a full sized half-ton GMC truck and the transmission went on it. It had the tow package and all the coolers and bells and whistles. It was just out of warranty and I was so mad I traded it in on a Ridgeline. Couldn't have been happier, I was fooling myself with the need for a bigger truck... I never towed anything over 5,000 pounds and the RL handled that fine.
EDIT: I need to work on my reading comprehension. My truck was the older model, feel free to delete this post. I'm the worst.
