That is a great deal, lowest price I have seen on that product ever, especially being able to buy it straight from the H&R Block website.

Thanks for pointing it out!

Made the switch from turbo tax to HR block several years ago and am a satisfied customer of the H&R Block product.

Awesome deal, but too late for me. Next year, I will wait until mid December before I buy tax software.

Hoping for some guidance on the deluxe vs premium. Have a federal, schedule B, 2 Cs, D, E, SE. Rental property. How necessary is it to get the premium in this instance? No state filing needed. Thanks!

Any calculus on taking this deal vs. waiting for another Amazon deal (which would include rebate in form of Amazon 5% gift card)? Seems Amazon deal would be better for Amazon shoppers like me.

Re premium vs deluxe

At this price, and with your need for some of the "extra" forms related to self employment and rental property, suggest you spend the extra $10 for the premium.

Deluxe has all those blank forms you mentioned, and you could still do your return using the deluxe product; but then you would also be filling in some of those forms yourself without the interactive guidance the software offers to help fill all of them in for you in response to the question and answer logic flow.

It looks like the State program is free but the State E-File is an additional $19.95

I thought Vanguard discontinued the TurboTax freebie one or two years ago?

They did discontinue it at Vanguard several years ago. Used to be a flagship free benefit once upon a time. No expectation it will ever be back.

Have only seen a modest discount through fidelity, and never any free offer; though some report they have gotten a targeted free offer from fidelity based on asset level or trade history.

How do you actually purchase it? I can't seem to find a place to click that allows you to purchase it. I'm on my phone so maybe I missing something.

Oh well, thanks for answering that; it seems like tax software is generally getting a lot more expensive for state e-file - unless you're willing to re-enter all your data on a state website, maybe. Ugh. I guess mailing for $4 or whatever it costs might be worth it with them charging so much.

Yeah, Vanguard discontinued it but we can still hope. :D

I was one of the chosen ones for the free offer from Fidelity last year. I am trying to remember when they started to offer it. IIRC it was after the start of 2017.

Is there any way to download a second Deluxe (Federal + State) on the same computer? I need to have two different state programs and it would be cheaper to download another Deluxe for 14.95 than buy an additional State for 39.95.

It states one of the hardware requirements is a CD ROM drive. Is that accurate, or can you simply download the software?

The Amazon refund version appears to be an extra $5 to $15 more right now, depending on the level needed.

I don't think that would work if you want 2 state filings with the same federal filing. Each download (purchase) would have a different registration key. Can you manually fill out the easier state return and mail it in?

I notice that Amazon's discount has just been discontinued. Coincidence? I think not!

Exactly what I was thinking, its time for me to learn to manually fill a state return for 2nd state.. Guess i can compare and contrast to last year's filings and this learning will be helpful for the next few years as well.

Pull out last year's returns and look to see which state return looks easier (to do manually). I had to fill out PA for a few years while one of my kids went to college there and had a campus job. I don't remember PA having anything difficult compared to California (although DH and my taxes were more complicated than the student's).

I'd really like to keep things electronic. I save all my tax returns as Pdf files and don't want to have a loose return as a paper document that I have to keep track of.

Amazon lets you access your software purchase later if you need it. I believe H&R Block lets you pay a little in order to be able to access it later. I lost it when my computer died and couldn't get it back at HRB, so I replaced it at a bargain at Amazon.

I've also used H&R Block software for years and I've been a happy customer of them for the most part. My only complaint is last tax year I had to upgrade my product for the system to be able to include my foreign tax credit. I never had this issue before, so I'm not sure whether H&R changed what services they included for each product or whether I selected the wrong product by mistake. Without this upgrade, I would've had to pay an extra $253 in federal taxes!

Fortunately that didn't happen and the upgrade didn't cost me anything as H&R Block offers its software for free for military members through Military OneSource. Still, I found it unsettling how one simple thing selection of software could make the difference in having to pay a lot more in federal taxes.

1. Can I import last year's Turbo-tax return file to H&R block? I did a search on H&R block site, but could not find an answer. My big concern is whether it will import depreciation and balance values (cost basis) for the rental properties.
2. I need to issue 1099-MISC to someone and then report it to IRS. Can I buy premium version for $24.95 and is there an option to upgrade to business version $39.95. I really hate to pay extra $15 just to create a single 1099-MISC I need to issue, but I am willing to pay that price to move away from Turbotax. I do not have S-corp, C-corp or anything like that. Everything is DBA (against my SSN) only.
I want to grab the deal before it expires.
Thanks.

I will share some advice that I got from my children in a similar circumstance. After sharing with them my plan to buy a used scanner to keep some old documents in electronic form, they looked at me like I was a Neanderthal and said in near unison "take a picture of it with your smart phone". If you want to dress it up a bit, there are even free apps (like Mini Scan) to help with that.

H&R offers a web based version...why bother with software you have to download? I did the online version last year...I think it may have been $30ish all in...maybe less I would have to check. Very user friendly, walks you through everything.

Yes. I'm going to be using H&R Block download this year, instead of TaxAct. Because we need Schedule C, Taxact (Freelancer) is currently three times the price of H&R Block (Premium). Even when Taxact had a sale on a few days ago, it was still twice the price.

Two reasons: 1. I don't want H&R Block storing my tax return online. 2. The current H&R Block deal is for the download versions only. Online is currently significantly more expensive.

Thanks for the heads-up!

A note in case anybody else runs into this -- the registration code I received was in the form: ABCD-WXYZ. Well, the program told me the code was invalid. Turns out you need to type it in without the dash ('-'). Pretty lame, really. This was on the Mac version and maybe it will be patched in an update. But meanwhile, if you have trouble getting the code to work, try leaving out the '-'.

Amazon has the H&R Deluxe 2017 Fed with the 5% Amazon Bonus for $24.97 (as of 12/28). Break even is sending $300 of your refund to purchase an Amazon gift card to get a $15 bonus added to the card. Also, the software remains in your download library. H&R Block charges $4.99.

^^^ I've got an Amazon gift card to use...

As of January 1, 2018, Amazon is showing H&R Deluxe + State 2017 + Refund Bonus Offer for $33.74 (PC download).

From H&R Block direct: Tax Preparation Software For Download | H&R Block®

$54.95 - Deluxe
+ 5.99 - Extended Download Service - if you want to be able to download your software more than 60 days after the purchase (2 year limit)

As far as I know, Amazon does not impose a time limit for digital downloads.

Both Amazon and H&R Block will add sales tax if there is an H&R Block brick and mortar store in your state. (Read this online, haven't purchased anything yet.)

I wonder if the download time limit applies to the state version. You can't even download the state version yet. Also I wonder if there is a limit downloading updates. I've never used this product so I'm not sure if the state version will appear as a separate download that will be easy to copy/save for reinstallation later.

I wouldn't be worried about any of that. The updates and state versions are downloaded from within the running program. I am pretty sure the "download time limit" just refers to the installer for the base program. If you make sure to have saved a copy of the initial installer program (on a burned CD or whatever) and a copy of your registration code, I am pretty sure you will be all set and don't have to worry about the download time limit.

Update for others:
The deal is still valid. I was able to import Turbo-tax file to H&R Block without any issue whatsoever and cost basis was also imported.
Note: The license code you get needs to be typed-in. Copy-paste does not work.

I moved out from CA last year, so I will have to file two state returns this year.

I am thinking of buying two copies of H&R Deluxe (fed+state) and installing on two different computers. I am guessing it will be OK to download the two separate state programs onto two different computers. After completing the fed return, I will copy the data file to the second computer to complete the return for the second state.

Anyone tried this before?
