Completing Form W-8 in Australia

Post by cornellbuds » Thu Dec 07, 2017 10:13 am

Wondering if the community has some insight about how an Australian national can supply proper info to Vanguard to avoid maximum withholding:

Each year, people must file RS Form W-8 to avoid withholding. An "Aus Tac file number" does not fit into the US online boxes so a user gets blocked at that point in filling out an RS Form W-8.

Any idea as to how one might interact with Vanguard more easily when foreign account IDs don't match US forms?

Are you sure that you are trying to enter your Australian tax number in the right part of Vanguard's online W-8BEN process? There are two places in the W-8BEN process where you might be asked for a tax identification, and it sounds above like you are referring to the one that asks for a US social security number or US TIN, rather than the one for 'foreign' tax ID (that is, foreign to the US but not to you!).

I'm in the UK, and a UK tax id is 9 characters, so the same length as an Australian one. The makeup is slightly different -- the UK is two letters, six digits and a final letter -- but both should fit into Vanguard's online W-8BEN process. Mine certainly did.

All that aside, Vanguard's online W-8BEN process is not at all smooth, making it very easy to get somewhat lost in it...
