I would rather own the "real thing".

Re: REIT Magazine
Yes. For many many decades. Primarily residential multi-unit housing and R/E development. Owner/developer.
As many here have said. It is a full time business and prosperous if done well. By no means passive nor stress free.
I have been fortunate.
Re: REIT Magazine
Im the same way, would definitely rather own actual property.
Re: REIT Magazine
Wow - I didn't realize that Vanguard Reit funds are many many times higher than their closest competitors.
The chart was illuminating. Plus the expense ratios of many of the funds were 2 and even 3%

Re: REIT Magazine
If I wanted a REIT magazine I would just read Seeking Alpha.com.

Re: REIT Magazine
I do not read "Seeking Alpha". Is this something you recommend?

Re: REIT Magazine
Always got the impression seeking alpha was click bait. Maybe just the articles from them that wind up on Google Finance...

Re: REIT Magazine
I read seeking alpha. There are a couple good authors in the REIT space.
However, there is a lot of rubbish to wade through before you find any gems.
I would not recommend for most bogleheads.
I own a couple of rentals right now. I'm also undergoing a major rehab that will add nicely to my net worth.

REIT Magazine has been redesigned with the current month issue. The main article is related to the American Tower REIT with a $60 Billion market capitalization.
If interested it can be viewed on the website.

I hold FREL in my Fidelity Core 4 (+1) port and 5 out of my 15 stocks are REIT's in my Divi stock port in Roth.
I also read Seeking Alpha but there's a lot of trash to get to the few gems.

Re: REIT Magazine
I received my first issue a few days ago.
Pretty interesting reading, all in all. Real estate market is really changing with hedge funds snapping up so many single-family homes.
I have a small holding in Vanguard REIT Index ETF (VNQ) I have had for a long time. No intention to sell. No plan to buy more, either.
I'm always interested in learning more about investment vehicles, so perhaps I'll learn more about REITS from the magazine.

Glad you are enjoying it. Yes, many single family homes have become REITs so purchased by private equity.Broken Man 1999 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 07, 2017 8:58 am I received my first issue a few days ago.

Re: REIT Magazine
Does anyone think the The Wall Street Journal touches on the subject of real estate and REITs enough? Could more coverage be a plus?

Re: REIT Magazine
I have been thinking about this for a while.
Owning "the real thing" gives more control but REITs gives you location diversification.
If I ever buy property as investment, I wonder which % of my portfolio should it be. I don't want to take money out of my investments to buy a property and had all my eggs in a single nest.

Re: REIT Magazine
REITs are ideal for some, especially those who want real estate but don't want the headaches of tenants. Of course anything that separates one from directly receiving the rent check cuts returns, as well.car733 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:58 amI have been thinking about this for a while.

This is true and there are costs regarding of the method of ownership. Direct ownership has ongoing cost. REITs have expenses in their companies as well.

Re: REIT Magazine
What is the opinion of The Wall Street Journal in terms of REIT and Real Estate coverage? Is there enough?

Re: REIT Magazine
I now feel that REITs are tied to the real estate market, not just interest rates.
So the market indexes have enough in the real estate sector.
And if REITs were tied to interest rates, then it's like the bond market, and I've got that too in my asset allocation.
But thanks for pointing it out, because I love to read and it's free and I try to have an open mind.

Re: REIT Magazine
I will be interested to see Rick Ferri's new site when it launches and whether his views on REITs have evolved in any way from when he was more active on the BH forum. From recent comments it appears his views are mostly the same.

Re: REIT Magazine
Industrial REITs are my weakness. I own PLD and STAG. They are closely tied to the 10 yr rate, and Amazon.
