Seeking Advice on 401K Investments & % Allocations

Post by Bross » Wed Dec 06, 2017 3:39 pm

I am looking to get some advice or input on my 401k investment choices and % allocations:

Information:

Pharmacist, 29 YO
Maxing my 401K annually
Current 401K Total ~115K
My wife is also a Pharmacist doing the same thing – No kids
I supplement my primary income with an additional per-diem job, and plan on maxing out a 457B (non-government) annually with Providence Health (the per diem job) in the near future when the student loans are eliminated. My tentative plan is to be more aggressive with the 457B when I get to that point in time, and I am not overly concerned about Providence going belly up.

Current 401k setup: (UPDATE POST BROKERAGE LINK ACCOUNT OPENING IS BELOW)

Large Cap: Vanguard Institutional Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VIIIX) (0.02% ER) - 50%
Mid Cap: Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VEMPX) (0.05% ER) - 10%
International: Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund Institutional Shares (VTMNX) (0.06% ER) - 30%
Bonds: Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Institutional Shares (VBTIX) (0.04% ER) - 10%

I have tentative plan to follow the “120 – Age = Stock allocation” theory. I would say that I prefer to keep it at a more moderate risk profile.

401K Investment Options: (excluding the Freedom K target funds with an ER of 0.64%)

Large Cap:
- ABF LG CAP VAL INST (AADEX) – 0.60% ER
- FID CONTRAFUND K (FCNKX) – 0.58% ER
- VANG FTSE SOC IDX IS (VFTNX) – 0.12% ER
- VANG INST INDEX PLUS (VIIIX) – 0.02% ER

Mid Cap:
- VANG EXT MKT IDX ISP (VEMPX) – 0.05% ER

Small Cap:
- ALZGI NFJ SMCPVL IS (PSVIX) – 0.84% ER
- FID SMALL CAP GROWTH (FCPGX) – 1.09% ER

International:
- AF EUROPAC GRTH R4 (REREX) – 0.85% ER
- VANG DEV MKT IDX IS (VTMNX) - 0.06% ER

Income / Bond Investments:
- PIM TOTAL RT INST (PTTRX) – 0.46% ER
- VANG TOT BD MKT INST (VBTIX) – 0.04% ER

Short Term Investments:
- FIMM GOVT INST (FRGXX) – 0.18% ER

Any input or suggestions for change would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Your setup is within the range of suggested "good" portfolios often discussed here.

UPDATE:

I opened Fidelity Brokerage Link account to increase my options (admittedly still a novice, but learning). While I would prefer to do a simple total market 3 fund account setup with Vanguard Index Funds, that would involve additional fees I am trying to avoid, so I stuck with fidelity funds on the brokerage link account portion. Ultimately, I wanted the domestic stocks to maintain a ~(70-20-10) distribution somewhat close to the total market fund, while also rounding out an aggressive diverse setup.

New Look:

Large Cap: Vanguard Institutional Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VIIIX) (0.02% ER) - 40%
Mid Cap: Vanguard Extended Market Index Fund Institutional Plus Shares (VEMPX) (0.05% ER) - 10%
Small Cap: Fidelity Small Cap Index Fund - Investor Class (FSSPX) (0.17% ER) - 5%
International Developed: Vanguard Developed Markets Index Fund Institutional Shares (VTMNX) (0.06% ER) - 20%
Emerging Markets: Fidelity Emerging Markets Index Fund Premium Class (FPMAX) (0.13% ER) - 10%
REIT: Fidelity Real Estate Index Fund - Investor Class (FRXIX) (0.23%) - 5%
Bonds: Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Institutional Shares (VBTIX) (0.04% ER) - 10%

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, Brian
