Best albums of 2017

Post by buckeye7983 » Tue Nov 14, 2017 5:05 pm

Well, it's that time of year again. Didn't see this thread for 2017, so...

My favorites this year:

Royal Blood: How Did We Get So Dark. No sophomore slump. Huge sound from two guys. No lead or rhythm guitar, just bass guitar and drums.

Greta Van Fleet: From The Fires. Double EP. Rock lives! 21 year old twins (vocals and lead guitar), their 18 year old brother (bass), and 18 year old friend (drums). The latter two had to skip their high school prom because they were on tour.

What was/were your favorite(s)?

Any more opinions? I'm sitting here going through the various Staff picks for best songs and albums at WFUV, my usual go-to on air/streaming station. They sort of validate my conclusion for 2017 that it isn't my year, but I'm still listening.

http://www.wfuv.org/content/best-2017-staff-picks

WFUV releases their Listener Poll results on Dec 19. I generally find that listing more to my tastes. Crowd sourcing frequently works, at least for me.

Today I listened to the WSJ's Jim Fusilli's Best Music of 2017 listings from the Dec 13 edition. I keep reading him because I get the Journal and he first flagged Norah Jones for me before she was generally known years ago.

I'll give the listings in the posts above a try. Thanks.

I don't usually like a musician enough to get all their songs. So the concept of an entire album seems a bit foreign.

I did notice Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" on some of the lists. That tune immediately caught my notice because of the trombone arrangement -- something I've never heard before in a pop/rock song.

Not surprisingly, trombonists are on YouTube ready to show their stuff. This guy does "Feel It Still" almost entirely with trombones and clapping. It's pretty good. :D

Album definition:
"A collection of recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, or another medium"

You can download full albums from itunes or other digitial-media means - its not synonymous with a 33RPM-Record.

For me, 2017 will not live up to 2016 but it's not a dud either. Some of my favorites:

Big Thief - Capacity
Sylvan Esso - What Now
Waxahatchee - Out in the Storm
Lorde - Melodrama

And my favorite of the year:

Ibeyi - Ash

Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound

There was Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN and there was everything else. I liked the Rostam release also but DAMN was the only great album I heard this year.
