Southwest Companion Pass [California only]

Post by charis23 » Wed Oct 25, 2017 12:00 pm

I thought I'd post what I think is a ridiculous "deal" but only for California residents.

California residents can get a Southwest companion pass by just opening a credit card and making one purchase: https://creditcards.chase.com/a1/southwest/PlusCali.

If you haven't heard of the companion pass before, once you have it, you can designate a "companion" who can fly free with you on any Southwest flight for as long as you have the companion pass. Typically you have to open two Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards to get the companion pass to accumulate enough points to get the pass but now they've shortened the path.

“With this crazy offer, not only do you get the Companion Pass until the end of 2018 with card approval and just one purchase on the card, but you also still get 40,000 sign-up bonus Rapid Reward points after spending $1,000 in the first three months. The offer expires on 11/30/17, and the Southwest cards are sadly typically subject to 5/24 rules. There is a $69 annual fee, but in my mind, that is nothing compared to getting a Companion Pass and 40,000 bonus Rapid Reward points!”

That does seem like a great deal... thanks for pointing it out.

It's a great deal! Plus, SW is flying to Hawaii starting in 2018. We will definitely enjoy taking advantage of this deal.

I did that last year, and don't live in CA...

The points that post, qualify for the Companion pass.

Now that we've all frozen our credit reports, the great credit card offers come out

This is different. It's instant CP after first purchase. No need for 2 cards, timing hitting minimum spend, etc.

As I read the offer on the points guy, Southwest must email or mail you this offer. It is not something you can just randomly signed up for. Other restrictions apply. I hope I am incorrect, but this is what I am reading…

I heard this too. I know some friends applied even though they were not specifically emailed. I'll circle back here and let you know if they actually get the companion pass.

Bring up Google and type in "SouthWest Companion Pass California"
One of the listings will be a sub-link of creditcards.chase.com. This is a public link.

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card - Credit Cards - Chase Bank

Click on the sub link and it will bring up the offer. At the bottom of the page is a check to see if you are a California resident.
Points Guy did a write up on this when it was only good as a targeted offer. He and other Bloggers have since updated the information on the offer.

It is too bad the offer didn't expire Jan 2018, then you would have the pass until end of 2019..

It is common with the normal offers to wait until Jan to finish the qualifying event (normally a purchase.)

Note that you can still do this for the 40k points for $1000 minimum spend (or whatever it was... going off memory here). Then if you get another 70k in 2018, that's another year of CP.

I am a bit jealous since I don’t have a CA address anymore. I do wonder how this offer is going to work out financially for them. And how (if) other airlines will respond. With Alaska’s expansion in CA the west coast may see some interesting fares and offers.

Regarding Hawaii in 2018... maybe. That’s how most of the press interpreted their announcement, but what they actually said is that tickets will be sold starting in 2018. That could be for 2018 travel... or 2019 travel. First they have to get their ETOPS certification.

An interesting way to extend the companion pass to almost 2 years instead of 13 months is to not use the card until January which would then get the companion pass for the reminder of 2018 earned plus all of 2019.

It all depends when the points post, and they will always give you the pass for your current year and then the next one.

Promotional Companion Pass is valid from the time promotion qualifications are met, through December 31, 2018.

This is from the offer terms for the "first purchase" promotion involved with this card.

If you also hit the 110,000 points in the year, you should get an extension on the Companion Pass to the end of the following year, maybe that's what is meant by having the points hit in January, but the 40,000 points listed will not get you all the way there.

The terms seem to say you have to spend $1000 within the first 3 months so January works for that. The companion pass is activated after the first purchase so if a person waits until Jan and charges up $1000 in the month they should get the 40k points and the pass, at least that's my thinking.

As I understand it the 40k bonus points come after 1k spent (has to be by first 3 months of card ownership). The companion pass happens after the first use of the card. I haven't received the card / "welcome package" yet so will update if it's different.

This is too juicy of a deal to pass up.

I currently have two other credit cards; a Citi Double Cash Mastercard and a BofA Cash Rewards card. I'm thinking of canceling the BofA card. Would it be better to do this first before applying for the Southwest card?

If you have decent credit and only have 2 cards, then it shouldn't matter if you close one and then open another. However if you're worried, then open the Southwest card first then later close the BofA card.

Okay, so in summary:

1) Once you acquire card, make one purchase now to get companion pass through Dec 31 2018.
2) Spend $1000 in January 2018 so that the 40k points post at that time.
3) Earn another 70k points in 2018 (perhaps by applying for a Southwest business card to net another 60k points after 3k in purchases)
4) By doing so, companion pass is extended to Dec 31 2019.

Piece of cake! :D

From the offer details:
Promotional Companion Pass is valid from the time promotion qualifications are met, through December 31, 2018.
...
If Companion Pass is earned by flying 100 qualifying one-way flights or earning 110,000 qualifying points in the calendar year while qualified for promotional Companion Pass through December 31, 2018, the regular Companion Pass qualifications will supersede the promotional Companion Pass, entitling the individual to Companion Pass through December 31, 2019.

I'm hesitant to go for this:
- It's always an uphill battle to convince my wife about deals like this (she doesn't like free $$) ("Won't this ruin our credit score?!! ")
- We have a family of 4, I think I'd need her to unfreeze her credit as well and get a card
- We're already planning a trip for next year but it's to Europe. Likely won't take any other time off.
- It seems the voucher must be used by the end of 2018

At least we have a few weeks to decide :?

Confused again....

It says the promotional companion pass is valid until December 31 2018.

Why would one assume that doing your first purchase in Jan would give you access through 2019?

I think because the "regular" Companion Pass could potentially give you 2 year if you time it right. Getting the Pass early in early will allow you have it for that year and one more calendar year.

This one is different.

Just to be clear, the companion pass is not a (one time use) voucher. You can fly all you want with your free companion.

https://www.southwest.com/rapidrewards/ ... anion-pass
Friends fly when you do

Companion Pass is the benefit that lets you choose one person to fly free* with you every time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. To qualify, simply fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 110,000 qualifying points in a calendar year, and you’ll earn Companion Pass for the following full calendar year, plus the remainder of the year in which you earned it. *Does not include taxes and fees from $5.60 one-way.

As far as I can tell, the promotional companion pass is only valid thru Dec 31, 2018. As such, it shouldn't matter whether you make your first purchase now or later.

However, it seems that you should try to spend the first $1000 at the beginning of 2018, that way your 40k points are acquired then.

Why does it matter if the 40,000 points post in 2017 or 2018? Is that to try and get a companion pass for 2019?

Has anyone actually gotten their companion pass (from the promotion) enabled yet? My wife did this one, and we've already gotten the bill that includes the first purchase, but companion status is not showing up on Southwest yet. I'm not all that worried about it (I think they said to allow up to 30 days for it to be enabled, and we don't have any immediate SW trips), but I'm mostly curious if/how others have seen it show up.

One of my coworkers got their Companion Pass through this promotion a few weeks ago already. I'm waiting to pull the trigger on spend over $2,000 on both of my cards in January to get the Companion pass for 2018 and 2019. :D

Please update if this works out. I think I got bait and switch. Got approved but card that was mailed home was NOT VISA signature but instead VISA Plus. Now I have to call and make sure is the same deal before activating. This happen to any one else? Credit limit was $20k so easily qualified but pretty sure they gave me card that does not have the free companion pass

It's supposed to take up to 8 weeks. Give it a little more time before calling in.

I still haven't gotten mine either, made first purchase 2 to 3 weeks ago.

Re: Southwest Companion Pass [California only]

No bait and switch. I got my companion pass in February by applying for two Southwest Visa cards, a personal one and a business one, and spending the required amounts. I’ve used my companion pass four times this year already and my pass will last until December 2019.

The card in the link in the original post says "Plus" not "Signature". Check it out: https://creditcards.chase.com/a1/southwest/PlusCali

Too bad. I have companion pass until Dec 2018. Hope another deal comes out next year.

Sorry I meant December 2018 because my companion pass started this year (2017).
