Credit report freeze guide

Post by fishboat » Wed Sep 13, 2017 6:11 pm

Perhaps I'm just paranoid, but to avoid searching and getting steered to "unofficial websites", does anyone have handy the official websites and CS numbers required to freeze credit reports at Experian, Equifax, Transunion, Innovis & Chexsystems?

I was having similar thoughts. It would be great if Bogleheads could come up with a guide for the wiki. At least basic bullet points. I know it is not polite to ask for gifts but I would be happy to pay with my eternal gratitude.

I'm both concerned and ambivalent because I don't want to make matters worse, which seems like a possibility from things I've read.

I just did this today for all 5 companies and it is really straightforward. A Google search for each company (make sure names are properly spelled) will turn up the correct company as the top "hit". Cruise around the website if you are paranoid, to make sure it is legit (but honestly, unlikely to end up on bogus site if you are Internet savvy in the slightest.) Search each company for info about "security freeze" or "credit freeze". They will ask you for basic identifying information, then hit a button to request the freeze, and it is a done deal (and you should get a snail mail letter with PIN number to unfreeze in future).

My only issue today was that I couldn't get through to the security freeze page on Experian (probably due to high traffic). So, there was an alternate way to do it by phone, also super easy, just follow the prompts.

They are also linked on some of the other Equifax threads.

how do you enter the name and address over the automated phone system? does it use voice recognition system? it will only work for me if it was designed, developed and tested in Channai :-)
