Please consider changing the "# Replies" column from being centered to right justified. Example, instead of the first few columns being like

Code: Select all

163 p I own no international stocks. Can you guess why? ...
8 p Keep Home or Upgrade?
have them be like

Code: Select all

163 p I own no international stocks. Can you guess why? ...
8 p Keep Home or Upgrade?
Good catch, thanks. That was an oversight on my part. It's fixed.

I had to clear my history to get the home page that looked ok.

Will not being able to jump to a specific page in longer threads be missed?

It would be nice if the home page didn't use up the entire first screen with text instead of showing the threads.

This was discussed earlier. If there is a "more/less" button after the word Bogle, click it. If that does not work, clear your browser cache and try again. Worked for me.

I like the new home page but suggest having the threads show how many pages if more than one page (like before). For example [1,2], etc.

A note about navigation on mobile:

On the old page after I followed a topic, the only link was to the list of topics, and in the old layout, you needed to pinch and zoom the page to make it workable.

On the new layout, there is no button to go back to the page where the list of topics is.

I'm wondering if anyone tested this on an iphone before it was changed and deployed?

I finally went to a facebook thread where I wanted to post about the bogleheads....

The automatically generated preview finally makes some sense!:

Bogleheads Investing Advice and Info
Bogleheads® is the title adopted by many of the investing enthusiasts who participate in this site. The term is intended to honor Vanguard founder and investor advocate John Bogle.
BOGLEHEADS.ORG

This is a huge improvement!

THANK YOU!

Just curious, why the change from Jack to John? I know John is Mr. Bogle's legal name, but my understanding is he goes by Jack.
I had that reaction, too, but all his books say John C. Bogle. Wikipedia has the titling John C. (Jack) Bogle, which I thought was helpful. Many people may not know Jack is a common nickname for John.

On a similar note, I get a little piqued about adding the phrase "living below one's means" to this list of things Bogleheads emphasize. This is an investing forum, not a lifestyle forum, and that tenet is not listed in the Bogleheads Philosophy:
The Bogleheads® Philosophy
*Develop a workable plan
*Invest early and often
*Never bear too much or too little risk
*Never try to time the market
*Use index funds when possible
*Keep costs low
*Diversify
*Minimize taxes
*Keep it simple
*Stay the course

I'm not sure Jack (John C.) ever mentioned "living below one's means". It doesn't have much to do with investing. Many folks on this board can save a ton and not embrace the lifestyle idea of living especially frugally. Might just be my own quirk, but the "cheapness" thing that gets associated with Bogleheads in general, should really just apply to investing.
Actually, living below one's means has EVERYTHING to do with investing. If you don't live below your means, there's nothing left to invest. Everything else follows that simple (but vital) statement.
When I wrote my post I thought of you Mel, because I know you feel that way. :happy I think we may disagree on this point. Many BHs can save 30% or more for retirement and live a terrifically comfortable lifestyle. Living below one's means may not even enter into their mindset. They save what they need to and spend the rest. To me, the Boglehead mentality has to do with investing wisely, and not overpaying for investment products or advice, along with all the other critical points of the stated philosophy.

I equate the "living below one's means" idea with austerity or sacrifice. Maybe I'm coming at this from a different mindset than others, but Bogleheads philosophy (to me) is just about dispatching the money you have already decided to save. No vows of poverty needed.

*I say all of the above with great deference to you, knowing who you are and with great appreciation for everything that this site is!
Agree. We consider it important to live WITHIN one's means.
And that includes any savings necessary, such as for retirement, for college, for travel or hobbies... anything that can't be cash-flowed.
And cash-flowing special experiences or things is also included in living *within* one's means.

And fully enjoying those experiences :happy

RM
ResearchMed, I know I can't cashflow experiences or many wanted items in my home. I am not complaining but just pointing out that different income levels require different life views.

On LBYM. i see it a mechancal step required to accomplish goals. Many people do Not understand the need to actively plan savings. They think of savings as left over money.

Is there any way to get this link:

on the end or footer of the page in addition to the header?

Not in the footer, but at the end of the post listings just above the footer.

Look for --Back to top--, which will jump to the top of the post listing. That should be "close enough" to the top of the page.

I thought you meant from the home page itself. You're showing the forum, which does not have a link in the page footer.

Scroll to the top of the page you're showing now (this thread), click on "Bogleheads.org".

View subforum list will go to the bottom of the post listings.

--Back to top-- will go to the top of the post listings.

The forum's mobile design is the "stock" configuration, with a few customized links at the top of the page.

If the developers of the world's most popular open-source forum software (phpBB) didn't put a link at the bottom of the page, they had a good reason. It won't be changed.

Actually they changed the link to go to the topic page rather than the home page.

You would think you would allow people to customize that.

What did the developer say to that question?

The previous behavior of the button was to go to the home page, which needed to be pinched and zoomed. Now the home page is readable on mobile, but more difficult to navigate to.

The left-side column under "Bogleheads Forum", 3rd link down, will show "Login" if you are not logged in. Once you are logged in, the link changes to "View Your Posts".
Could "View Your Posts" be added to the list instead of replaced?
If not, is it possible to return to this page after login instead of some other page, which involves 2 additional steps from the previous process.

The software is indeed fully customizable. My point is that we're maintaining the "stock" configuration with no (or minimal) changes.

If you want a single-tap "jump to top", consider adding that feature to your browser. For example: android chrome jump to top - Google Search

Once you're logged in, the software won't show you a login screen until you've logged out. IOW, it's not possible.

You can return to the home page clicking on the "Bogleheads.org" header - it's a clickable (one-tap) link. The header is accessible from any forum page.

In desktop view, you can also click on the logo, just to the left of the Bogleheads.org.

According to market share about 33% of people use iOS. I don't know if bogleheads are any different from average.

Do you mean 33% of mobile users? If so, I doubt that translates into 33% of people accessing Bogleheads as a lot of them will be using laptops or desktops.

Yes, of mobile users. I assumed that was understood as iOS is a mobile operating system.

When viewing a thread, the page numbers are available at the top of every page, just under the header.

I too did not find it intuitive to navigate to the correct forum to create a new topic. Also, when you read the FAQ's those are not the instructions given, at least not in detail.
