setting up a wireless printer

Post by BashDash » Wed Sep 13, 2017 12:08 pm

Hi all,

I was given a wireless printer as a hand-me-down without directions. Are there any standard procedures for helping me set up the wireless printer ( DELL ) so that it can print from an IPAD? I can give exact model number as well I just don't have it in front of me right now. Thanks all!

The manufacturer's documentation should be available online as a pdf either on the manufacturer's website or elsewhere. Just google the model number.

You could also try here:

Probably the easiest solution is to google "Dell [model number] setup" - most likely there will be a link to the instructions on Dell's site. If that fails, go to the Dell support site and enter the model number of the printer.

To set up my wireless printer, I had to install software onto my computer provided by the manufacturer of the printer. I would check their website for a downloadable version.

The iPad wireless printing capability is known as AirPrint. Here's a link to the Dell web page on configuring AirPrint for a number of their printers: https://www.dell.com/support/article/us ... rs?lang=en

Correct. To be clear, an iPad/iPhone can only natively print to a wireless printer if it supports AirPrint. These printers are usually the newer, more expensive business class printers. My cheap Dell color laser wireless (c1660w), which was $60 new at Staples, doesn't support it.

Dell has an app though, Document Hub, that supports printing to a wide range of wireless printers that don't have AirPrint. It allows printing pictures and documents on the device through the app, printing a Web page - about it. But better than nothing.

Note that wireless printers are notoriously finicky so after you do your googling, if it doesn't work don't despair. If you do the same thing again the next day it may work. Step 3 is ask someone in their 20s to help. (I'm not in my 20s but I wouldn't touch someone else's wireless printing issues for anything less than 2 slices of pizza.)

Not any that would be of use if you need step-by-step instructions as process and specific steps can vary a bit.

Dell's Support site is an excellent resource for documentation and drivers. As stated above, verify that the model you have supports AirPrint though there are also solutions for printers that are not AirPrint compatible.
