Why is this jumping to the bottom of the forum and not directly under this persons response?

Because that's how phpBB works. It's not a threaded display, it's a chronological display. Quotes are the proper way to insert the threaded context for your reply.

### Re: Please Try Out Test Posts Here

The bottom of the page (and in the User Control Panel) offers several sorting options. Look for "Display posts from previous: "

As Mudpuppy says, it's a flat display - not threaded.

If you want to make the change different from the default settings, the User Control Panel options are here: Edit display options (generic link, will go to your User Control Panel)

### Re: Please Try Out Test Posts Here

This is a test to see if a bookmarklet can add MathJax to this page to display these AsciiMath expressions like real math.

gMS_30 = 1/((1+r_1))+1/((1+r_1)(1+r_2))+cdots+1/((1+r_1)(1+r_2)cdots(1+r_30))

gMS=sum_(i=1)^n (1/(prod_(j=1)^i(1+r_j)))

Edit: It seems to work. Here is the bookmarklet. It was taken from here.

Code: Select all

javascript:(function(){var%20jsCode=document.createElement('script');jsCode.setAttribute('src','https://cdn.mathjax.org/mathjax/latest/MathJax.js?config=AM_CHTML');document.body.appendChild(jsCode);}());
Edit 8/14/17: The Mathjax script is moving to a new host. Here is the updated bookmarklet.

Code: Select all

javascript:(function(){var%20jsCode=document.createElement('script');jsCode.setAttribute('src','https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/mathjax/2.7.1/MathJax.js?config=AM_CHTML');document.body.appendChild(jsCode);}());

### Re: Please Try Out Test Posts Here

FYI Ron, it's not working on my browser. It all just looks like escaped markup, not rendered formulas:
gMS_30 = 1/((1+r_1))+1/((1+r_1)(1+r_2))+cdots+1/((1+r_1)(1+r_2)cdots(1+r_30))
When I look at the source code for the post, I also only see the escaped markup as pure text, with no scripting constructs. Since you're using a client-side scripting process, I should be able to see it in the source code even if my browser security blocked it from rendering. I would not be surprised if phpBB removes any bookmarklets or other attempts at using scripting in the post when the submit button is hit.

Awesome! It works it works in Firefox.

1. Create a new bookmark.
2. Copy Oicuryy's code block into the Location field, save the bookmark.
3. While still on this page, click on the newly created bookmark.

To address mudpuppy's point phpBB (the forum software) is very careful to remove anything that should not be contained in a forum post.

Once phpBB is done with it, the server renders the page and sends it to your browser. This is where the bookmark picks up the page - on the receiving (client) side after the page is processed. phpBB is out of the picture at this point, everything is local to your PC.

FireFox's Inspect Element shows MathJax has been inserted into the page.

Just in case, I should state: Custom page modifications are not supported, YMMV.

### Re: Please Try Out Test Posts Here

Mudpuppy,

Or you could copy and paste the bookmarklet code into the browser's address field. But most browsers will strip off the javascript: at the front. You will need to type that back in before pressing enter.

Phpbb does not support MathJax or AsciiMath directly. Alex could probably add support. But he likes to keep modifications to a minimum. The bookmarklet gives us users a way to put math expressions in posts and see them in our browsers without any changes to phpbb or bogleheads.org.

Bear in mind that there are a number of math rendering standards. For example, the wiki has implemented Extension:Math which uses MathML. Note that MathJax has been deprecated.

An example is here: Risk and return, scroll down to see the equations.

The following link displays a screen shot of a Morningstar table: http://s16.postimg.org/fvzl3q65x/screenshot_88.png

Yet, when trying to include this as an image in a post by bracketing that URL with "img" "/img" (using brackets instead of quotes), I'm getting
It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct.

This hasn't been a problem for other images. Has something changed?

That error says there's a problem with the link (or that it's not an image).

There's something wrong with the URL you posted. At the time of this post, clicking on the link directly resulted in an error "Server not found".

I think there's a problem with the image hosting server (not your fault).

Well, that's strange.

I can click on the link directly without problem. Tried going to the main site, http://s16.postimg.org, and had no problem with that.

Tried clearing cache (for that matter, all history for the past hour). Still no problem seeing the image if I click on the URL, but unable to see it as an image in a post. Also tried going to another forum and was able to have the image display there.

But if you can't get to the server, then...?

I can't get to it either. The DNS lookup returns a SERVFAIL response for both IP and SOA (start-of-authority) lookups. Attempting to lookup the nameservers listed on the WHOIS record also returns SERVFAIL. So it looks like their DNS provider is down. You or your ISP have probably cached the DNS lookup, which is not removed when you clear your web browser cache (totally different cache).

Or, for a less technical explanation, check the down for everyone website: http://www.isup.me/postimg.org

Quoting the post you are responding to is also easy. Just hit the quote button before you reply.

Edit: corrected typo

Editing a post is also easy. If you made typo or want to make clarification, no problem! Just hit the Edit button. Common usage requires that you put a note at the end saying what you edited, but it's totally up to you!
This is real easy to do.

Think if it as "Notepad" (text only) for your post. It shows things as you type them literally:

My goal was to explain why the system is this way, and how it got this way, using as little financial jargon as possible (like "NAV" or "arbs" or "frictional costs"). Well, not to completely explain it (I'm missing a lot of things, clearly), but at least to provide a simple model of how it arises naturally from the behavior of rational, self-interested investors with a time discount.

Any markup in the "code" environment is not rendered, so your reply isn't working because you're putting the tags in the code environment. You want to use the b, i, and u tags in a non-code environment.

Example:
bold
italics
underline

Here's a helpful guide to formatting: BBCode guide

Select the text, then click on the post editor button "B" to bold, "i" for italics "u" for underline. Also supported is "s" for strikeout.

Code: Select all

To some, the glass is half full. To others, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, it's twice the size it needs to be.

Can someone kindly educate me as to how to multi-quote?

Thank you.

Hit "Post a reply" to reply to the thread which puts you in the post editing box. Under the post editing box are the thread responses in reverse time order. Note that each post has its own quote button.

Scroll down to the post you want quoted and hit the quote button for that post. The quote will show up in your post at the cursor's current location.

Here's an alternative to notifications. Go to the "view your posts" link and look for the ones with new activity: search.php?search_id=egosearch

Click on either red icon next to the thread title to go to the first unread post in the thread. Now that won't take you directly to anyone who has quoted you, but I find it's good to pick up on the overall conversations.

This works well enough for me that I have actually disabled notifications for post activity. I only use notifications for PMs, which might be a bit superfluous with the redesign too.

Just FYI, the email notification showed up this morning, almost a day later. FWIW...
Thanks for letting me know. My hunch is confirmed. (The same thing happened when we moved from phpBB 3.0 to phpBB 3.1. It took several days for the server to get caught up.)
Let's give it another day to let the server catch up.

Thanks All,

Thanks for the replies. Notification "works" in that it shows on the upper right of the screen, but there are no emails.

I will wait a bit per LadyGeek's comment.

If you get stuck, post the link here and someone (like me) will help you get it going.
