What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Tonight, on Netflix, I watched Diplomacy. This is a Franco-German historical drama directed by Volker Schlöndorff and starring André Dussollier
and Niels Arestrup. In 1945, Raoul Nordling (Dussollier), the Swedish consul-general in Paris, meets with Dietrich von Cholitz (Arestrup), the German military governor of occupied Paris, to convince him not to destroy historical landmarks across the city.
The film was on the talky side but still quite interesting and, of course, based on actual events.

A Walk in the Woods
With Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, and Emma Thompson.
I was ONE of FOUR persons watching this movie in a theater today (my wife and two senior ladies were the other three souls in the theater). This movie is about a senior writer (Robert Redford as writer Bill Bryson) and his senior friend (Nick Nolte as Stephen Katz) hiking the Appalachian Trail. In this movie Robert Redford looks good and in great shape while Nick Nolte looks old and totally out of shape. This should have been a movie for the whole family, in my opinion the movie producers missed the boat in this one (I just don't see the need for all the four letter words in this or any other movie, for this reason the movie is Rated R). I liked this movie because of the good message (note that I don't like the lazy language). Overall, good movie for those who like to walk long distances and those who love the loneliness of long distance running.

I didn't know what to expect. I knew very little about it prior to seeing it. No qualms with the acting. I found some of the dialogue hard to hear. Some parts kind of dragged on and I just didn't find the whole thing that spectacularly interesting. It wasn't bad, but I was expecting a great movie based on the hype. I must be a dilatante when it comes to identifying high quality cinema.amateurnovice wrote:What hype? I think the awards were justified, maybe Boyhood deserved Best Picture. Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
Tonight I watched two films on Netflix.
1. Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation: Interviews with Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and others show how the music coming out of New York's Greenwich Village challenged the status quo and promoted social change during the 1960s and '70s. Pretty good.
2. Philomena: Directed by Stephen Frears and starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. In 1952, Irish teenager Philomena (Dench) became pregnant out of wedlock and was sent to a convent. When her baby, Anthony, was a toddler, the nuns took Philomena's child away from her and put him up for adoption in the United States. For the next fifty years, she searched tirelessly for her son. When former BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith (Coogan) learns of the story, he becomes her ally. They travel together to America to find Anthony and become unexpectedly close in the process. I saw this movie when it first came out and liked it then and like it now. Judi Dench gives her usual fine performance and so does Steve Coogan.

Last night, on Netflix, I watched The Cider House Rules, directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Tobey Maguire, Michael Caine, Charlize Theron,
Paul Rudd, Delroy Lindo, Erykah Badu, Kathy Baker, and Jane Alexander.
This 1999 film, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, follows the life of Homer Wells (Maguire), a precocious orphan who leaves his lifelong home and his loving tutor, Dr. Larch (Caine) to explore the world. While Homer struggles to make a life for himself on his own, he must make monumental decisions that will change the course of his future and deeply affect the lives of those around him. Based on a John Irving novel. Irving also wrote the screenplay and was awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Michael Caine was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but everyone in the film was great.

I definitely recommend Love & Mercy. [Also rented at redbox.] I am a music buff, so I was familiar with the overall story of Brian Wilson, but the movie filled in a lot of gaps and gave much greater insight into his life and music. I would go so far as to say you don't need to be either a Beach Boys fan or music buff to like the movie. My wife has little interest in music, but was very much drawn into the Wilson's epic career, life and struggles.
On the other side of the coin, we also watched the new Mad Max movie. From a visual and special effects standpoint, it was impressive. But it was also a bit confusing and short on plot. But that's to be expected with a Mad Max movie. If you enjoyed the earlier Mad Max movies, then this one is worthwhile. If you didn't, then feel free to skip this one.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
The last two nights, on Netflix, I've watched two Paul Newman films.
Last night, I watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Katharine Ross, and directed by George Roy Hill. The 1969 film won four Academy Awards and was nominated for three others. I saw the movie when it first came out and many times after that when it played on television.
Tonight, I watched The Hustler, starring Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, and Jackie Gleason, and directed by Robert Rossen. This 1961 gritty black and white movie won two Academy Awards: for Best Cinematography, Black and White, and Best Art Direction, Black and White. The film was nominated for numerous other Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor (Gleason and Scott), Best Actress (Laurie), Best Actor (Newman), Best Motion Picture, and Best Director. Why Paul Newman didn't receive the award is beyond me. It's one of his best performances, surely as good as his reprisal performance in The Color of Money, for which he did win the Academy Award for Best Actor. It's also puzzling that Piper Laurie did not win the Academy Award for Best Actress in what is perhaps her finest motion picture performance. (The end credits had to be the shortest I've ever seen, maybe a ten or fifteen second crawl at the most.)

Tonight, on Netflix, I watched Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, directed by John Huston and starring Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. A Roman Catholic nun and a hard-bitten US Marine are stranded together on a Japanese-occupied island in the South Pacific during World War II. Under constant threat of discovery by a ruthless enemy, they hide in a cave and forage for food together. Their forced companionship and the struggle for survival forge a powerful emotional bond between them. Kerr was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in this 1957 film.
My mom and dad took my brother and me to see this when it came out, if I recall correctly. I think it was at a drive-in movie.

Fury (2014) - Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf. Film about a tank crew in the final days of WWII. I thought it was better than average. Some reviews said it wasn't that great, but it's a war movie; you're not going to see Platoon or Saving Private Ryan every time. Pitt played a role similar to the one he did in Inglourious Basterds. The real star of the show was the tank. 3.5/5
Southpaw (2015) - Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams. I was expecting something grittier, darker even. The fact that he was already a champ when the movie started was surprising. I have to agree with a review that said it was close to cliche if not entirely cliche. The character development for basically every character waned on the thin side. 2/5

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?
I have watched two movies on Netflix this past week.
The first was The Italian Job directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green,
Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland. This is a remake of the 1969 film that starred Michael Caine. I actually think the newer film is better, but, after several viewings, I don't think it holds up that well.
The second was Moonrise Kingdom directed by Wes Anderson and starring Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray,
Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton. I saw this film twice when it was first released. Viewing it several years later, I still find it quite enjoyable. It's a nice story. Bruce Willis plays against type and plays it well.

Last night, on Netflix, I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's , directed by Blake Edwards and starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.
For those who aren't familiar with the movie, the movie is based on a Truman Capote novel. A young woman in New York City (Hepburn) meets a young man (Peppard) when he moves into her apartment building. He is with an older woman (Neal) who is very wealthy, but he wants to be a writer. The young woman is working as an expensive escort and searching for a rich, older man to marry.
The film won two Academy Awards: Best Original Score and Best Original Song for Moon River. (Moon River was composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer.) The film was also nominated for three other Academy Awards: Best Actress (Hepburn), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction. Moon River, which was sung by Hepburn in the film, was also selected in 2004 as the fourth most memorable song in Hollywood history by the American Film Institute. In 2012, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
For some reason, I had never seen this film until I watched it on Netflix. Having now seen it, I'm not sure why everyone thought this was such a great film.

Formosa Betrayed, starring James Van Der Beek. This movie is one of the "8-Movie Action Collection" on Blu-ray. (Another movie in this DVD is Ruslan aka Driven to Kill with Steven Seagal.)
I liked this movie, as it did indeed have a lot of action and an interesting plot. As the plot progresses, you'll see a history of Taiwan independence from the Taiwanese perspective - one that is very different from the US side.

On Netflix last night, I watched His Girl Friday, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, and Ralph Bellamy. Hard-charging New York newspaper editor Walter Burns (Grant) discovers that his ex-wife, investigative reporter Hildy Johnson (Russell), has gotten engaged to milquetoast insurance agent Bruce Baldwin (Bellamy). Walter unsuccessfully tries to lure Hildy away from tame domestic life with a story about the impending execution of convicted murderer Earl Williams, but when Hildy discovers Williams may be innocent, her reporter instincts take over. This 1940 film was #19 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years … 10 Laughs and has been selected for preservation in the United States Film Registry.
This classic 30s screwball comedy, which I have seen many times on the telly, is noted for its rapid-fire repartee and frequent ad-libbing of the two leads.

Mr Holmes, starring Ian Mckellen as the great detective.
Holmes is in his 90s and retired to a country house, having left the detective work 30 years prior. His memory's failing and he's trying to put to words the account of his final case, one that also holds the key as to why he retired.
It's really well-acted, and quite a different take on Holmes compared to other recent characterizations like BBC's Sherlock, Elementary, etc.

I saw this movie when it first came out and have seen it on the telly several times. This is the movie that cemented Steve McQueen's reputation as a major movie star. Surprisingly, this movie did not receive any Academy Awards. In fact, I don't think it received any nominations. No Best Actor for Steve McQueen, surely an oversight. No Best Supporting Actor. No Best Picture. No Best Director. No Best Cinematography. No Best Movie Score. No Best Adapted Screenplay. Must have been a tough year.

We just saw Bridge of Spies with the son and the daughter in law of FBI agent Gamber who hunted down Rudolph Abel, the spy who was involved in stealing nuclear secrets. This is an excellent movie starring Tom Hanks as the attorney that defended Abel.
The actual arrest is a small part of the movie, but does not appear accurate after reading Ed Gamber's oral history and discussing the arrest with him when he was in his late 80s. Agent Gamber was a lot more distinguished looking than the actors who portrayed the FBI agents and immigration agents in the movie. He told me that he knew Abel was in his hotel room because they were monitoring his dry cleaner. When they knew that Abel was picking up his dry cleaning then agent Gamber picked him up at the room. I do not believe they had to pull out their guns at all. I doubt they allowed him to move about the rooms while they were searching for evidence.
An alcoholic couple who were Soviet spies were detained by the FBI earlier and moved to another location. They refused to talk but gave all the information agent Gamber needed when they were allowed to drink vodka. Agent Gamber who attempted to turn Abel was duly impressed with his loyalty to his agency and country and expressed in his oral history that he had hoped our own agents had the same loyalty to their agency and the United States.

Sleeply Hollow (1999) Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci. Tim Burton's take on the Washington Irving horror tale. He takes extreme liberties with the story and eliminates much of what makes the original such a timeless piece of American literature. I didn't enjoy it, much like I didn't enjoy his other remakes (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland). 1.5/5
Side Effects (2013) Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Channing Tatum. This film directed by Steven Soderbergh follows the effects of a pharmaceutical on a woman, a crime she committed while supposedly under its influence, and the repercussions of the events in the lives of her and her psychiatrist(s). Interesting plot without any unnecessary twists, and the actors complement one another. 4/5

[quote="jginseattle"]Bridge of Spies. Excellent.
+1. Just saw it today. Great movie. People actually clapped in the end. Can't think of the last time I experienced that at a movie.

Bridge of Spies. Really took me back to the period. We have come a long way, seeing as how I was watching it with my wife who is a former member of the CPSU .
I was a bit too young back in the day to know any of the actual event. But it really captured me and transported me to 1960-1 for 2+ hours.
On a smaller scale, kind of reminds me of Schindler's List.

Django Unchained (2012) Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson. Directed by Quentin Tarantino in the same aesthetic as spaghetti westerns, this film follows the story of Django, a slave, from his freedom at the hands of a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter, played by Waltz, to the adventure they have together while trying to find and rescue Django's wife from her master, played by DiCaprio. Violent, similar so the Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds, but not with the same emphasis on the violence but, well, the blood. Story is told well without any voice-overs or narration, and Foxx and Waltz play off one another quite well. 4/5
