Master thread for Washington DC Area Bogleheads

Post by grabiner »

The DC Bogleheads normally meet on the third Sunday of every odd-numbered month, in either Arlington or Silver Spring.

The next meeting of the DC Bogleheads will be from 3:00-5:00 on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in meeting room #1 at the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library, 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, MD. This is the same library we have used in the past, but it has been renamed.

The location is a short walk from the Silver Spring station on the Metro Red Line. Take the "South side Colesville Road" exit from the Metro station, turn right, then right on Wayne Avenue (walking around the bus depot), and go five blocks to Fenton Street; the library is on the right. Parking garages in downtown Silver Spring are free on Sundays. The closest garage is at Wayne and Fenton, diagonally across from the library.

Notes - Retirement Withdrawal Rate Strategies

Post by bobcat2 »

I have uploaded my Sunday notes on "Retirement Withdrawal Rate Strategies" to the files section of the DC Diehards website. The notes are in Microsoft Word format and are cleverly titled "Notes on Retirement Withdrawal Rate Strategies". Here is a link to the files section of our local website.

You need to sign in to the local DC Diehards (Bogleheads) website to access this file.

Thanks, David for updating the Master Thread showing the change in our meeting location. And thanks, bobcat2 for arranging the location for our next meeting.

The Washington Plaza Hotel hosted us for several years until an apparent change in management. They can no longer accommodate us due to a Sunday Brunch during our meeting time period.

Meeting this Sunday - September 21, 3:00-5:30

Post by bobcat2 »

As grabiner previously noted.
Our next meeting is this Sunday, September 21, 3:00-5:30, in the second floor meeting room at the Arlington, VA Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22201; this is the same place as our previous meeting in July.

The library is between the Virginia Square and Ballston stations on the Metro Orange/Silver Lines. From Virginia Square, walk four blocks west (left, away from Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn right on Quincy, and go one block to the library. From Ballston, walk three blocks east (right, towards Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn left on Quincy, and go one block to the library.
The second floor meeting room is on the south side of the library (the side nearest Fairfax Drive). Turn right when you get off the steps and walk straight to the south side of the library. The meeting room is to the immediate left of the glass enclosed quiet reading room.

There is free parking in the library parking lot behind the library and in the library parking garage below the library. There are no timed parking restrictions on Sundays. The timed parking restrictions are on weekdays to prevent commuters from using the library parking lot as free Metro parking. 8-)

At this point there are no specific topics, but I do have a few notes we can discuss if everyone should become tongue-tied and speechless.

If you have topic suggestions you can post them here, or at the DC Diehards page on Yahoo Groups.

PS - We don't actually meet from 3:00-5:30. The meeting goes until about 5:00. The room is held until 5:30 in case some people want to talk after the meeting has ended.

At yesterday's meeting I mentioned that if you wait to take Social Security until age 70, but take Medicare at 65, your lifetime Medicare premiums are higher. I couldn't recall why the premiums will be higher.

Here Larry Kotlikoff explains why.
When inflation is low, like it is now, there is a disadvantage to delaying until, say 70, collecting one’s retirement benefit. The disadvantage arises with respect to Medicare Part B premiums. If you collecting benefits (actually were collecting them last year), the increase in the Medicare premium this year will be limited to the increase in your Social Security check. This is referred to as being “held harmless.” Hence, when inflation is low, the increase in your check due to the cost of living adjustment will be small, meaning the increase in your Medicare Part B premium will be limited. But, if you aren’t collecting a benefit because you are waiting to collect a higher benefit later, tough noogies. You’re Medicare Part B premium increase won’t be limited. And that increase will be locked into every future year’s Medicare Part B premium that you have to pay. You can wait to join Medicare until, say, age 70, but if you aren’t working for a large employer, the premiums you’ll pay starting at 70 will be higher and stay higher forever.

Alexandria public library meeting rooms

Post by bobcat2 »

The Alexandria public library has meeting rooms available to patrons and their organizations for meetings of an educational, cultural or civic nature. However, to reserve the meeting rooms you must be "a library cardholder in good standing (no fines or fees on your account) who lives in, or owns property in, the City of Alexandria, or works for the City of Alexandria."

We need a local Boglehead who lives in Alexandria and is a library card holder to reserve the room. Do we have an eligible volunteer to reserve this meeting room in the future on those dates we can't book the Arlington library meeting room?

It's SS secret #31.
I couldn't find a link to the actual policy that makes the premiums higher forever; do you have a citation?

Here is my understanding, based on checking various links. The standard premium for Part B is set to cover 25% of costs. The hold harmless rule says that your net Social Security (SS minus Part B premium) cannot increase (unless you pay a higher premium due to high income). Thus, if you had SS and Medicare in 2010, your Part B premium did not increase in 2011 or 2012 (with no SS COLA), and probably increased by only as much as your SS COLA in 2013 since the COLA did not make up for three years of increases. But once the SS COLA is large enough that paying the full Part B premium still gives you an increased SS benefit, you should be paying the same amount for Part B as a new enrollee or one who paid for Part B out of pocket.

This Sunday there will be two presentations, which will likely be very different from one another in both in subject matter and tone.

David will be making a presentation that is particularly pertinent and timely during the present sign up season on High Deductible Health Plans and Health Savings Accounts.

I will follow David's presentation with an overview presentation on the basics of financial risk, a subject central to investing and personal finance in general, but which is also a subject many Bogleheads flunk with depressing regularity.

Yes. The next meeting will be on January 18, 2015 from 3-5PM. While you're at it, you can add to your calendar that we always meet on the third Sunday of every odd-numbered month, at the 3-5PM timeframe.

And Victoria, I also thank David and Bob for their presentations yesterday.

This is so funny. I just found about these meetings and for the last 8 years I lived one block from the Arlington Central Library where you all meet. I would have attended these meetings too. We sold our Arlington residence this past Monday and we're now firmly planted in the Charlotte NC area. I'm really going to miss
Arlington -- and the Central Library, with its great speaker's program. I wish I had surfed a bit more here to uncover the meetings.

I'll have to check to see if there's a Bogelheads group in Charlotte, NC.

Hi Ed,

An announcement just went out with a different time slot for 18 January 2015. Do you know if it's a new time or a Yahoo! quirk?

Hi Victoria,

I have scheduled the meeting room at the Ballston library for Sunday January 18 from 3-5:30 PM. I usually send out announcements on the preceding Tuesday and Friday. I don't know if something was inadvertently triggered from the past by Yahoo Groups, which sometimes seems to have a mind of its own, or if someone else sent out an announcement. In either case the five hour error suggests that Yahoo interpreted the request as GMT time and converted those hours incorrectly into US EST of 10-12 AM (a five hour difference.) For whatever reason, Yahoo Groups sometimes interprets inputted times not as local, but instead as GMT time and then converts them to local times. :?: :?: When this happens the local EST becomes five hours earlier than intended.

You can check with the Ballston library calender at the following link to confirm that we are indeed scheduled to meet from 3-5:30 PM on Sunday. The 3 PM start is listed in the Confirmed Bookings calendar for Sunday the 18th on the left of the Sunday calendar page. The green shaded blocks (signifying a time slot not booked) from 5:30-6:30 on the Sunday block slots map at the top of the page implicitly confirm that we have the room until 5:30.

http://arlingtonva.libcal.com/booking/largemeetingrooms

BobK

PS - My calendar listing at Yahoo groups shows that the announcement for a 3-5 PM meeting on Sunday is scheduled to go out at 3 PM on both Tuesday and Friday. I don't know why the erroneous announcement went out today. :confused

It's a Yahoo bug. My Yahoo groups calendar was on GMT and I couldn't figure out how to change it to EST. I mistakenly scheduled the event for 3 PM GMT, and then saw the odd announcement and changed it to 8 PM GMT (3 PM EST). I have "3:00" in the event title to avoid future confusion.

Hi evilityb,

We can only hold four meetings a year at the Arlington library so you are needed. I have booked the Arlington library for our March meeting, but I would like to hold a first meeting in Alexandria in either May or July.

Thanks for the offer,

Next meeting is on the 22nd, not the 15th

Post by bobcat2 »

The next meeting of the Washington area Bogleheads is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, 3-5PM at the Ballston library.

There will not be a meeting this coming Sunday, March 15.

The day after our last meeting I scheduled the March meeting. We generally meet on the third Sunday of every other month, which would be next Sunday March 15. Unfortunately for me and us, the 60 day scheduling window had already opened and there were no 2 hour time slots open for Sunday, March 15.

Our normal 3-5 PM time slot was available for the following Sunday March 22 and I have booked that.

I will send an email out about this tomorrow to DC Bogleheads.

Next meeting is on the 22nd, NOT the 15th

Post by bobcat2 »

I have just approved a new member at DC Bogleheads.

The reason the person gave for wanting to join now is to attend tomorrow's meeting.

So once again the local moderators are sending a reminder.

This month we are NOT meeting on the third Sunday, March 15. Instead we are meeting the following Sunday, March 22.

Neither I, nor the other moderators, want to receive angry missives from members showing up tomorrow. This is why I am sending out this additional reminder that we are not meeting tomorrow the 15th. It's true that we nearly always meet on the third Sunday of every other month, but not this month :!:

On the topic of scheduling a meeting for May at the Alexandria library -- at which library does the group meet? The Beatley branch on Duke, perhaps?

And how big of a room is needed? Any special equipment I need to request?

The May meeting & other administrative stuff

Post by bobcat2 »

Administrative issues that were discussed at the March meeting of DC Bogleheads.
One person had emailed requesting some or all meetings be held on Saturdays rather than Sundays. As best I recall the consensus at the meeting was that most people prefer Sunday over Saturday and holding some of the meetings on Saturday would be confusing. So we stick to Sundays.

Another emailed suggestion was that we put the local meetings on Skype. The consensus on that issue was that until the technology improves both in ease of use and sound quality, when there are many speakers, we would not attempt anything like that.

A suggestion made at the meeting was that we meet every month instead of every other month. A counter suggestion was that the fairer gender members could attend the regular meetings and the dinners the female members hold on the off months. This makes for every month get-togethers. In addition perhaps later this year we could restart the quarterly ESPlanner meetings, which would be open to local BHs plus the many other ESPlanner users in the DC Metro area. If we do this on a regular basis, the ESPlanner meetings could focus more on general personal finance issues, and the DC BH meetings could focus more on investing issues.

Where to hold the May meeting.
We also talked about holding the May meeting somewhere other than the Ballston library. Mainly because we hold six meetings a year and we can only schedule four meetings per year in the Arlington library system.

One person volunteered to schedule the meeting room in his apartment building in the Ballston area for the meeting in May. We agreed to try that. He has attended several meetings and I should know his name and his Boglehead handle, but I don't. If he sees this post, I would appreciate it if he would PM or email either me or Grabiner about the status of the room for May, or simply post the status in this thread. If anyone knows him, would that person contact him so we can find the status of the room for the May meeting. We would like to use that room, but if we haven't heard anything back by mid-April, we need to schedule either the Arlington or Alexandria library for the May meeting.

Hi,

Yes it was. I emailed him back this morning and I'm awaiting a response either here or by PM or email.

Next meeting May 17; new location

Post by grabiner »

Our next meeting is May 17, 3:00-5:00, in the common room at 888 N. Quincy Street (Liberty Center), Arlington, VA 22203.

The location is between the Virginia Square and Ballston stations on the Metro Orange/Silver Lines. From Virginia Square, walk four blocks west (left, away from Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn left on Quincy, and go one block to 9th Street; 888 is on the southwest corner. From Ballston, walk three blocks east (right, towards Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn right on Quincy, and go one block to 888.

Parking on streets in the area is free on Sundays, or you can park in the garage at the Ballston Commons mall.

(edited to correct parking recommendation)

Here is additional information about Sunday's meeting location.

The Liberty Center high rise condo/apartment complex at 888 North Quincy Street, Arlington, on the west side of the street, is located two blocks south of the Ballston library also on North Quincy. (The library is on the east side of North Quincy and is where we have been meeting for the last year.) The complex is on the block south of the intersection of North Quincy with 9th Street.

While you could park in the library parking lot or garage two blocks north of Liberty Center, library parking is designated only for library patrons. OTOH your chances of being towed on a Sunday are extremely low. Street parking in the Ballston area is typically free on Sunday, but pay the rest of the week. Thus, free street parking should be available this Sunday within two blocks of the Liberty Center. Another parking alternative is the parking garage at the Ballston Commons Mall, which is 1.5 blocks away on Wilson Blvd. The daily parking rates at the garage are as follows. Daily up to 3 hours is $1.00, up to 4 hours is $2.50, up to 5 hours $4.00, and up to 6 hours is $5.00. There is nearly always more than ample parking in the garage on Sundays.

To get to the Commons area at Liberty Center enter the main entrance of Liberty Center at 888 North Quincy Street. The entrance is a glass door leading to the main lobby. Directly across the lobby from the entrance is the Common Meeting room, which is glass enclosed so you see it as soon as you enter the lobby.

We are meeting here instead of the library this coming Sunday because the library limits groups to a maximum of four meetings per year, and we meet every other month.

Here is a link to a map of Ballston centered on Liberty Center and also shows the locations of the library, the Ballston Commons Mall, and the Metro stops. There is also a pop-out photo of the entrance to Liberty Center at 888 North Quincy.

Michael LeBoeuf will give a short talk this Sunday

Post by bobcat2 »

Michael LeBoeuf and his wife Elke will be attending our meeting this coming Sunday, July 19 from 3:00-5:00 at the Liberty Center complex in Arlington. They will be in town attending a Speakers Convention and Michael contacted Ed Rager to see if they could attend our meeting. Michael is an author and speaker who wrote "The Millionaire in You" and co-authored the original "Bogleheads Guide to Investing" with Mel Lindauer and Taylor Larimore.

Michael plans to give a short talk focusing on how he discovered Vanguard and the Bogleheads and how he ended up co-authoring the Boglehead book with Taylor and Mel. He also will talk about the time he had lunch with Jack Bogle in 2001 when Jack was in Phoenix to speak, which occurred about a month before Michael attended his first Boglehead reunion.

See this post for detailed directions to the Liberty Center apartment/condo complex.

Afterwards I'm hoping a group of us, hopefully including Michael and his wife, will have dinner either at the Russian restaurant or the Thai restaurant next to the Ballston Common Mall.

Here's a link to the website of the Thai restaurant, Bangkok Bistro -

It should be an interesting meeting and a good time.

Special thanks to Ed for setting this up. :D

Hi bobcat2,

I understand Michael was one of the authors of the excellent book "The Bogleheads Guide to Investing". I recently purchased the second edition.

You folks will have a great time!

Retirement Research Conference in DC in August (free)

Post by bobcat2 »

The 2015 Retirement Research Consortium Meeting will be held this coming Thursday & Friday on August 6-7, 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The event is free of charge, but registration is required.

I have posted more info about the meeting at the following linked thread, including links to the agenda and registration sign up.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=170875

In recent years there have usually been several DC Bogleheads at the conference. If you plan on going, let people know on this or the linked thread and we can try to sit together.

Also, a few of the nation's leading financial planners will be attending this year's conference. This is an excellent venue to ask them a question or two about financial planning in general, or particular questions you have about your own financial plans.

Our next meeting will be this coming Sunday, September 20, 3:00-5:00, in the second floor meeting room at the Arlington, VA Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22201. The second floor meeting room is on the south side of the library, just to the left of the glass enclosed quiet reading room. The library has a free parking lot for patrons behind the building and free parking in a garage below the building.

The library is between the Virginia Square and Ballston stations on the Metro Orange Line. From Virginia Square, walk four blocks west (left, away from Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn right on N. Quincy, and go one block to the library. From Ballston, walk three blocks east (right, towards Washington) on Fairfax Drive, turn left on N. Quincy, and go one block to the library. The library is on the east side of N. Quincy Street.

The 2015 Retirement Research Consortium Meeting was held Thursday & Friday on August 6-7, 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Sam, Heather, and I, along with one other person who was at one of our local meetings several years ago, were at the conference. The three of us can briefly review some takeaways from the conference.

Also I want to go over briefly a couple of things that were tangential to the conference.
Here is a link to a Bogleheads thread about the conference.
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=171579&hilit=bobk

Here is a summary of the conference by financial planner Paula Hogan.

The rest of the time is open forum at this point. If you have a topic you would like to discuss, post it here.

Two of Heather's friends have highly recommended a Mediterranean restaurant, Kapnos Taverna, about three blocks from the library (@ North Quincy and Wilson) for those who are interested in dinner after the meeting. Link to WaPo review from late May.

It's too bad that Pope Francis will miss our meeting by two days.

Hi Daren,

Our meetings are open and you are welcome to attend them. Perhaps, you could tell us the slant of your story and how our meeting could enrich it.
