Favorite Vacation/Trip

Post by acejacksingh »

Hi BHs,

Some friends and I are planning a trip this summer and I'm looking for Boglehead ideas! We're all under 30 and would like to keep it under $2500 (or less) for a week long trip (that includes flights, hotel, etc.) Most of us are located up and down the East Coast (mostly in DC). Pretty much open to any ideas, but it looks like the trip would be domestic due to budget constraints...

Trips I've enjoyed in the past:
Beach Trips (Cancun, Ocean City (MD))
City adventures (NYC, Boston, Atlantic City, and Seattle)
Outdoors (fishing, hiking, camping in Shenandoah VA)

Trips I would like to do:
Road Trip
Vegas
Skiing (but that won't work for the summer?)

Thanks!

One of my favorite vacations that was also relatively inexpensive was renting a car and driving up the coast of Oregon over the course of a week. Lots of interesting places to see.

If you wanted something closer to the east coast, flying into Miami, driving down the Keys, and spending some time in Key West is also a lot of fun.

West coast of the US by car would be pretty nice. Could include Oregon. Also cities- SF, Portland, Seattle...

Personally I would avoid LA. San Diego is nice however.

You do NOT want to go to Florida, or anywhere close, in the summer.

If you are not familiar with west coast weather- you will find it cool and pleasant anywhere along the coast even in the summer. Inland could be very warm.

There are probably still openings in that "So You Think You Can Be a Porn Star" camp. You get a keepsake video at the end and it will probably be a once in a lifetime experience.

Maybe you want to try out various kinds of Marijuana, so DC and Jamaica would be worthy destinations.

Maybe you would like to give us some hints of the kinds of vacations that you liked in the past and the kinds that you did not like?

I never take 'long' vacation, but oddly enough, my favorite vacation, was also my longest.

Two years ago I took a full week off, flew into San Diego, rented a convertible, and drove up the coast to San Fran. It wasnt so much the sites that was amazing. After getting off the plane in SD, sun in my face, I just smiled thinking that I have another 5-6 days of this.

Fly to Costa Rica and split a VRBO rental between you. That has been our favorite vacation so far. Here is the place we stayed and will probably be back next year. Beaches, kayaking, sea turtles, fishing, diving, horseback riding. Pretty much everything is here but there are a bazillion rental options in Costa Rica

http://www.vrbo.com/220000

Here is another place we stayed at up in the mountains that was also great if you don't want to cook and want rainforest instead of beaches

Let's just say that I no longer work at my day job. My colleagues in my new profession tell me that Costa Rica has very nice adults-only hedonistic resorts.

How early in the summer can you go?

Because my inclination would be to say go to Vegas and use that as a base to hit up a couple national parks. But you'd want to do that in May, not July.

Some possibilities
1. Combine Vegas and Road Trip to Grand Canyon, Zion Natl Park
2. Fly to San Francisco/San Jose, in addition to SF, do short trips to Napa, Yosemite, Big Sur
3. Yellowstone, Grand Tetons
4. Fly into Moab and do trips to Arches, Canyonlands

For a shorter trip (3-4 days), you can hangout in downtown Chicago soaking in the summer festivities, street life and museums although you can very easily spend a week or more.

For me a trip that combines some urban and some nature (National Parks) has typically worked out well. If you plan in advance, you can stay inside the NP (cabins or lodges).
Unless you stay in the very top hotels and eat out every meal in fancy restaurants, $2500pp is very much doable for most domestic trips.

For one of my favorite cheap vacations, all you need to do is drive to somewhere scenic, put a backpack on your back full of food and camping gear and return to your vehicle two weeks later. In between you get to see lots of great views and where I go, some of the best mountain fly fishing on this earth. Since I have all the gear, it really only costs me the gas to drive out west to the mountains.

If money weren't an object, the best vacation I ever took was spending three weeks riding a dory boat down the Grand Canyon. I would do it again in a heartbeat and will once my kids are a little bit older and can come with me.

I'm with Livesoft on this one. Need more info about what you're looking for to make a good recommendation.

So what are you and you're friends looking for? Beach and relax? Adventure and hike / bike / do something more extreme? Both? Are you ok with touristy things and crowds or do you want something more off the beaten path?

Is the $2,500 pp and does it include food?

How many people are going and is it couples or all guys or girls?

Spend a week as tourists in D.C. Get a hotel in a funky part of the city, or at least near a Metro station. Decide on the things you'd like to do ranging from bars/restaurants to film/theater to museums/embassies/thinktanks to parks/walking/hiking.

When you don't have to work and don't have to commute, D.C. is an exciting place.

Vegas is great because, in addition to the over-the-top strip attractions, there are some amazing places within driving distance. Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, Mount Charleston, Death Valley, Zion, etc.

For that price could also consider Belize. Beaches, ruins, caving, maybe a little sailing. Might depend a bit on the season though.

If you're going with a big group of people and you want to socialize, relax and have a nice beach, I would rent a mansion in the Outer Banks.

If it's a smaller group of people who are all into adventure and nice beaches, I'd consider Maui. You could rent a Jeep, stay in a bungalow in Hana for a few nights, jump off some waterfalls, and also stay in a resort for a few nights. But that's a long flight for just one week.

I just returned from 2 weeks in Akumal, Mexico--beach, snorkeling, climbing pyramids, etc. Whether it's the East Coast of Mexico or the West Coast (Bucerias, PV, etc.), Mexico is a great place to visit; the dollar is strong, the people are wonderful, it's a great escape in the winter.

But…what I personally recommend is that you save up your money and go to the Galapagos. That was the one trip I will never forget. I've travelled to lots of places in the world. If I had to pick one place that was the greatest, that was it.

Several California trips - both in the fall:

A number of years ago, when our son was little (about 5-8 or so), I had several business trips to California (we live on the East Coast) - so my airfare was paid for. Fares for my wife and son were a real bargain, so we took one week trips there on two separate years. One was flying into and out of San Francisco, renting a car, driving to Yosemite National park and staying there in housekeeping cabins for about 5 days. (One night was in a tent cabin).

A few years earlier, we flew into and out of Los Angeles - rented a car for a week, and drove up the Coast to San Francisco, over to Yosemite for a day, and down to Los Angeles inland, stopping at Kings Canyon/Sequoia National parks to see the Big Trees.

My best trip was my honeymoon to the western US...and I've been all over Europe, the Caribbean, etc.

- Fly to Vegas (cheap)
- Drive to Kanab,UT area
- We hiked around South Coyotte Butte, White Pockets, "The Wave" (Google it), Grand Canyon, Bryce/Zion, Lake Powell and saw some of the most beautiful and unusual rock formations ever.

There isn't much for hotels around that area and camling keeps you in the park so you won't have to drive as much. We got a small kids tent from Walmart for $20 that worked perfrect.

The main costs were:
Flight: $640 or $320/each
Tahoe rental: $450 (White Pockets requires 4x4 and a tour was more that that)
Hotel: $750 we stayed at the Bellagio for 4 nights before flying home. Was perfect after 30-40 miles of hiking.

The whole trip split between each person would cost less $700 per person excluding food, permits, etc. I can't wait to go back!

If you're willing to double up on accomodations and/or use AirBNB Europe is totally doable on that. My wife and I do a couple weeks in europe for around $5k for the two of us. We're doing this itinerary this spring for less than that: http://www.utah.com/nationalparks/grand ... nerary.htm

Did you get permits for the Wave ahead of time through the website, or did you show up that morning for the lottery? I've been wanting to see that place, but tickets are scarce.

My favorite place to escape is Reno/Lake Tahoe.

You have the gaming of Las Vegas but at a fraction of the price and cooler in the summer.

You have a lot of hiking opportunities both near Lake Tahoe and in the Eastern Sierras.

There are a lot of interesting attractions - National Auto Museum, the May Museum, Carson City, Virginia City, etc. to keep the place interesting.

Another option would be Logan, UT as they have a lot of arts festivals in the summer months and some of the most beautiful terrain in the country.

There are many cruises with airfare, including the Mediterranean, available for well under that figure and especially low with inside staterooms. And, even lower in off season.

Two other nice vacations we took were cruises to Bermuda. I liked being "at sea" for 2+ days both going and returning. There were about 2+ days in Bermuda. Others may like cruises that stop in many different places, often every day - but that kind of cruise does not appeal to me.

No better time than the summer to visit California. I love the Caribbean and I love the Florida Keys and Mexico, but you are taking a trip during rainy season and it's a bit of a gamble and also hot/humid that time of year.

There is so much to do and it's difficult to narrow it down for a one week trip because there is so much to offer. Big Sur, Pacific Coast Highway, Carmel/Monterey, San Francisco, Sonoma/Napa......

If it were me I'd try to pick three destinations for the week. That is a lot of moving around but you can get from SF to Sonoma two hours or less depending on traffic. So I'd start in the south around Big Sur or Monterey/Carmel, a few nights in the middle of the trip in San Francisco, and then wind the trip down in wine country for a couple of nights. Sonoma is a perfect place to wind the trip down IMO, a slower pace after an otherwise busy week of sight seeing and travel.

Climber-

I hate to say it, but we just went without permits. There impossible to get and the even the daily lottery was packed...I mean PACKED full of people! It's off the same trail to the Buckskin Gulch, so we just hit it on the way.

Permits to South Coyote Butte were fairly easy to get online, but you had to get them the first or second day they became available - it's a few months prior to when you want to go.

After spending a week in the area, I'd recommend doing the following in this order:
1. Buckskin Gulch - from Wirepass Trailhead to White House Campground. 21 Miles and it took us 12 hours with 50lb backpacks. Next time we will pack lighter and do it in 8 hours. You can get here in a car.
2. White Pockets - No permits, no people and awesome formations. It's a 2 hours 4x4 drive and our rental Tahoe had no problem.
3. South Coyotte Bute - Easy permits, no people and looks like the Wave on steroids - miles 1 hour 4x4 drive and you pass coming back from White Pockets.
4. The Wave - Unlikely to get permits, tons of people and a relatively small area. Easy access and you could get here in a car.

Yeah, Vegas would be the top of the list. You can make a trip there as cheap (off-strip hotel, buffets with coupons, cheap/free attractions, people watching, quarter video poker) or as expensive (production shows, fantastic dining, luxury accommodations, spas, high-roller gambling) as you want. And, as mentioned, the side trips (Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam, etc.) are great when you want to get out of the city.

I'll also second the recommendation of the Oregon Coast trip. Maybe combine it with some Oregon wine country, a visit to Portland, and/or some Shakespeare in Ashland. You don't have to choose between City/Beach/Outdoors in that area--you can have 'em all in one weekend!

Another road trip idea might be a Route 66 ramble. Fly into one of the big cities on Eastern side of the route (Chicago, St. Louis, Tulsa, etc.) and rent a car. Drive along the old route for as long as you have time. Drop off the car and fly back. The one-way rental will not be cheap, but it will save having to drive all the way back.

I have enjoyed vacations or all kinds, but I think my favorite recommendation is to combine different locales and activities, executed flawlessly with the family in the summer of 2012, visiting Mt. Rainier, the Oregon Coast, and Seattle and providing an excellent national park/mountain, beach, and big city experience. We loved it!

A similar adventure could probably be created in the northeast (Acadia, Cape Cod, and Boston or something similar) or in the southeast (Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Nashville or Atlanta, and Outer Banks). Check the distances as I may be way off. ;)

Cruises are great value and a lot of fun with groups. For approx. $100 per night per person you get all food, lodging entertainment. From DC you could take a cruise out of Baltimore and pay no air fair. Or fly to Florida cheap on Southwest. Summer is off season so you should get good rates. Book early and save even more. I prefer Carnival as it tends to have a younger crowd. Larger ships offer more choices on entertainment and food.

*Beach: Soak in natural hot springs, go whitewater rafting, sailing an alpine reservoir, kayaking, river surfing, and sunbathe at sandy beaches.
*City adventures: Denver is a happening city, especially for your 30s generation.
*Outdoors: breathtaking scenery, endless outdoor recreation, world-class fishing in Gold Medal rivers, lots of camping, hiking in forests, mountain and rock climbing. Sunny days, cool nights, few bugs.
*Road Trip: beautiful byways and some exciting high-altitude passes. Rent an off-road vehicle for a day's adventure.
*Casino gambling in small mountain towns.
*Ski at Great Sand Dunes National Park. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IrR14RlPWRU

My favorite vacation was my honeymoon on Maui, but that wouldn't fit your budget.

For your budget, I would recommend South Beach. It will be crazy hot in the summer, but that will also help keep the cost down since it isn't peak season. There is plenty to do to keep you busy for a week: great beaches, good food, and lots of places to wander. You could also take quick road trips down to Key West or over to the gulf side for a couple of days. Just make sure to stay hydrated. 8-)

With that budget you could rent a house in Key west or the lower florida keys. Fly to Miami then rent a car drive down. That's my favorite place in the US if you like that kind of thing. We rent a boat, fish, snorkel, walk around Key West, it's a good time. Vegas is always fun but can cost more than $2500 for a week and about 5 days there is my max. You could book a Caribbean trip to a middling all inclusive resort via cheapcarribbean.com if you want a relaxing week of just beach, pool eating and drinks. Punta cana or Cancun offer pretty reasonable all inclusive packages. Europe would put you over budget.

We were in Europe for a week for about $4500 (when the Euro was $1.25) - family of four, all-inclusive thanks to Norwegian Airlines (granted, we Airbnbed our stays and limited our eating out expenses, else that would have been more expensive as well though not by a lot). I would say that for a similar trip, if OP could get similar airfare, they could swing it for $1500 a person. We were in Paris and Berlin for two days/three nights apiece.

I suggest a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine.

Eastern: Hike some part of the Appalachian trail
Western: Ditto Pacific Crest Trail
Midwest: canoe some place in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota or across the border in Ontario in the Quetico Wilderness.
South West and West: can't recommend the SW in the summer unless you are at elevation. Have seen canyon temperature highs of 119 F. and routinely well over 105. But having said that have spent many weeks rafting the Colorado, Green, Salmon , Snake etc. o n private/ self supported trips. Permits are hard to get, too late for this year, but commercial outfitters will have openings.
South: Gulf coast beaches, condos, riverboat casinos, fishing, golf, be prepared for heat and humidity.
Pacific North West: Hike Olympic National Park, walk beaches, fish for salmon, kayak very cold water bays.
Victoria BC is worth a visit.
California: wine country.

I hate to disagree, but I doubt this is a good idea. The crowd at cruises is significantly older than the OP. Also, if they really want to scope out a city, cruises, with their 8 AM to 5 P.M. stops can't be fun.

If I were in your position and hadn't been to Vegas, that would be the easy choice. I went there for the first time three years ago and still ask myself why I waited so long to go. One of my favorite places in the world, though I enjoy gambling. Not sure I could stay four there for a week, four days at the most. As others have stated I would visit other sites within driving distance of Vegas as well.

If Costa Rica fits into the budget, that's also a good choice. I enjoyed my time there. If it were me being the sports fan that I am, I would go to a city that would allow me to take in both a baseball game and an NBA playoff game or NHL playoff game. Chicago, Toronto, Boston are cities I would consider. There are also other things to do in the cities.

I have been to Costa Rica in April and it was great but very hot. I thought summer was rainy season so may be hot and wet. I live in Maine and hate to leave the State in summer as there is no better place to hike, bike, kayak, white water rafting, etc. Acadia National Park is gorgeous but busy in the summer so try going further "Downeast" and no crowds, beautiful coast, plenty of places to hike, bike and kayak. If you prefer the great northern woods, climb Mt Katahdin or canoe the Allagash
