Best websites like Bogleheads

Post by rsw748 »

I have found this website only recently and it is invaluable to me. I feel If I had found this site 5,10 years ago I would have been in a much better position financially now.

So that I would not regret later related to the other areas of life, I would like to ask people here for their favorite websites like bogleheads on the following topics:

parenting
kids Education
Health & Fitness
House Maintenance
Auto Maintenance

Thanks so much in advance!!

For all of the above,,,,,,Bogleheads site
But I see people posting only the financials related to some of the above topics but I don't see any non-financial discussions. I do believe people use separate websites for each of the above topics.

You might find the City-Data forums helpful.

For home related discussions, I've always found That Home Site - http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/, to be quite good.

I'm not a parent, so I don't have any advice on either of those.

Auto maintenance is best addressed by a forum/site specific to your car if you have a vehicle with a following. I've always enjoyed cars and have learned and saved a ton by visiting forums specific to my vehicle. If you have a generic car, get yourself a Haynes manual and call it a day: http://www.haynes.com/

Health & Fitness is a very broad topic, similar to cars, I would pick a site specific to your goals/interests. They'll give you ideas and help you stay motivated.

Home Maintenance: check out DIY Chatroom or Doityourself.com. Both have forums filled with many ex-plumbers, electricians, etc. I've used these forums religiously on several home improvement projects and get many helpful responses

Health and Fitness: try Teambeachbody.com. Also a forum from the makers of P90x. They have a paid option so just watch yourself if you join that you don't buy something you didn't mean to. Happened to me. Lots of good advice can be found though.

Youtube has some great stuff for situational things like repairing a faucet, fixing a lawn mower, removing a wart, etc

I wouldn't say any one site is great at any of those. You are better served knowing how to do quality searches on Google. Some times it makes sense to do a image search on Google and click on a image that pertains to your subject, example a specific type of repair for a car or device. If you Googlefu is weak there is a course for that.

http://www.google.com/insidesearch/land ... ching.html
http://www.powersearchingwithgoogle.com/

Being in IT I have a mental database of sites that provide quality feedback (solutions or additional troubleshooting ideas). It's rare that a off the wall problem hasn't been experience and rectified before.

Agree, but I hate having to wade through all the bad and unrelated videos and youtube's suggestions they are promoting for $$. If there was a video share site that was edited for quality I think it could be really successful.

While I hesitate to call it similar to Bogleheads you might want to check out The Motley Fool
They have a multitude of message boards many of which I find to be interesting, informative, and useful. I think all of the subjects you inquired about are addressed in one way or another by one of their boards.

For parenting, I have consulted parents.berkeley.edu for more than 12 years now. (I came across the site while looking for ideas on making a fire truck birthday cake. That child will turn 15 next month!) I am not a member--and therefore cannot post--because I don't live or work in the area, but discussions on a WIDE range of topics (newborns and sleep, kids' birthday parties, allowances, grades, school decisions, the teen years, estates, wills and trusts, difficult neighbors, declining libidos) are archived. Discussions are very thoughtful and informative. People who live in the East Bay area of SF will get the most use out of specific recommendations for services, etc., but there are a lot of topics that are not particular to a geographic area. I recommend clicking on the "What's New" link on the site.

For older homes pre 1959 or so, http://historichomeworks.com/forum/index.php

However, there is still a lot of good information on there that can be applied to newer houses as well.

Not many sites have moderators who are willing to volunteer the time and energy necessary keep this site the way it is. Without the moderators this site would slip into chaos within hours!

Not sure how old your kids are. If they are in middle school or above, there is a huge amount of info and knowledgeable/helpful people at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ I learned so much from that forum when my kids were going through the process. It really helps if you know how the system works.

Health and Fitness: http://scoobysworkshop.com

This site is aimed primarily at young men, which is NOT me!

That said, I've been following Scooby's advice for about 5-6 years, ignored the heavy lifting and other stuff that is beyond my interest or capability, and I've not only learned a lot of great stuff, but I am really physically fit for my age (mid-60s).

Every exercise contains detailed information and videos.

It's fun and it's free. Even the nutritional advice is really useful. I've lost weight, built muscle, and am in the best shape of my adult life.

There's a women's section, but it's small. The site is mostly aimed at young men. Scooby's videos get many thousands of hits--he's an icon, really.

reddit.com/r/personalfinance (maybe more relevant if what you like about Bogleheads is in part helping get people on the right track financially).

For house maintenance I recommend http://www.gardenweb.com. Be certain to navigate to their home forum. For auto maintenance it's probably best go to a marque specific site, or perhaps http://www.bobistheoilguy.com. And though you didn't ask specifically for an audio/visual forum, http://www.avsforum.com is great.

Don't be discouraged if the first few threads you read are not what you would hope for. They bury their treasure pretty deep over there, but it is my go-to web site for my soon-to-be-applying son and slightly younger daughter.

These are my favorites:

parenting - http://www.google.com
kids Education - http://www.google.com
Health & Fitness - http://www.google.com
House Maintenance - http://www.google.com
Auto Maintenance - http://www.google.com

Seriously, the areas are so broad, there isn't a specific goto site. Some topics are fairly local. While parenting and kids education general items are well discussed at Berkeley Parents Network, the specific local information about programs and services are fairly useless. Health and Fitness sites range from those that are overweight and need medical attention to those training for the Ironman Triathlon. Figure out where you stand in the spectrum and find a forum that addresses your specific needs. For House Maintanance, that could mean things like plumbing, roofs, or appliances. Auto Maintenance depends a lot on what make and model you have. Several of the more popular brands and cars have fantastic fans that contribute tons of very useful information that only impact your particular model. Don't overlook Youtube when looking for repair information of any kind. Some Yahoo groups can be great if you can narrow down your concern.

If you don't own a Ford Truck and aren't about to embark on a DIY head gasket repair job, this won't interest you in any way, and ton's of these kinds of irrelevant topics would make what you want to find nearly impossible (needle in a haystack). However, if this is exactly what you need, the 15 minutes spent could save you hours!

Wherever you go, I would recommend using another alias. I recall another thread where someone here was able to identify another person from another website asking a similar question!

www.Reddit.com

you really have to look through for the topics you are interesting.
