When can we file tax returns? (Form availability.)

Post by 555 »

TaxACT says I cannot E-file because the IRS has not released some forms.

"The following forms associated with your return are not yet released.
Form 8949 - Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets
Schedule D - Capital Gains and Losses"

See http://www.taxact.com/forms/

Is this a problem with TaxACT or the IRS or both?

I'd say TaxAct. My Taxwise software has 8949.

To be more specific, all the forms are in the tax software, and I have filled them. I can see all the numbers in these forms. But if you print out a copy (or make a PDF file) it does not include these two forms, and warns you accordingly. And it says you cannot E-file because the IRS has not released those forms.

Sounds like you might have an update issue. Has TaxAct issued any updates that you have not taken in?

Sounds like a TaxAct issue. I believe 8949 and Schedule D are ready to go in TaxWise.

H&R Block won't give me my state program yet, so I have no idea. However, there are lots of pages that say
This interview isn't final. Visit the Update Center for release dates.
My guess is that they wouldn't let me file even if I were finished.

I found a list of forms available vs to be updated:
http://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/cur ... forms.html

Code: Select all

   Win Mac

01/30/2013	01/31/2013 Schedule D: Capital Gains and Losses
01/30/2013	01/31/2013 - Capital Gains and Losses Worksheet: Capital Gains and Losses
YES 01/31/2013 - Sale of Home Worksheet: Sale of Home Worksheet
01/30/2013	01/31/2013 - Form 8949: Dispositions of Capital Assets

The IRS still hasn't revised Publication 17. It's website still shows the 2011 revision.

Yikes. That's pretty slow if the form is available from IRS and TaxACT just has to code it. And they are are not obscure forms.

Camparing the IRS form directory (with date last modified)
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/
With a couple of tax software lists
http://www.taxact.com/forms/
http://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/cur ... forms.html
it's clear the software companies aren't that fast at making updates.

Maybe the IRS isn't taking e-filed returns yet. See this thread

Or become a friend of the IRS on Facebook.

I'm well aware of the Jan 30 date. But that is not the reason that for not being able to file that was given by TaxACT.

I just opened TaxACT and there was an update. It looks like they got these forms ready in time. So it's odd that when I tried to E-file (which I knew I couldn't because of the Jan 30th date) they gave the lack of forms as the reason instead of simply referring to the Jan 30th earliest filing date.

Are you able to file now? I'm using the same software as you but there is still no update.

My "printout" (PDF file) has Form 8949 and Schedule D on it. Also when I started doing the actual E-file (as a test run, to check) it said nothing about the forms, and it looks like I can E-file any time. I might do it soon.

This is the message I get when I try to file:
The IRS hadn't yet finalized at least 1 of your tax forms when you purchased this program or last updated. To be sure you're up-to-date, we'll update your forms before you file. Our next update should be available by February 7, 2013.

Why? Did you lend a lot of money to the feds and your state this year? If not, are you just eager to pay off your debt to the government? (your version of payoff your mortgage) Are you subject to a penalty for underpayment of estimated tax so the sooner you pay, the sooner the penalties stop piling up?

Enquiring minds and all that.

All I know is that I try and keep myself out of situations where I have to act in desperation or in a rush. I like to take my time and be sure I have not made any mistakes* or that I am not going to get a corrected something in March. I am not filing this week or next. To each his own.

* It doesn't always work. There is actually a slight thrill when I get that letter from the IRS with CP2000 written on it.

This
http://www.taxact.com/forms/
says they now have all forms for individual taxpayers. In other words they got it ready in time for the Jan 30 date for IRS to start taking returns, though some of the forms appeared at the last minute.

Okay, finally got the update (Federal only, Massachusetts isn't available yet).

I've E-filed my Federal return.

A few reasons why it might be a good idea to file as soon as possible:

Decreases the chances of identity theft.

Paper Savings Bonds will be issued in the month of February.

I don't do this, so that reason slipped my mind. It certainly is a reason not to delay.

I seem to be on some hit list to send corrected something. It started in earnest when I was an expat and my employer kept sending me corrected W2 to adjust for various items they had overlooked. I was getting corrected somethings as late as August one year.

Fortunately, I was in extend+file in October most of those years so I would usually wait until a couple months of no corrections accumulated -- then I'd start. One year I couldn't file until January of the next year (I actually got an extension of the extension).

I'm having issues with FreeFile Fillable Forms: I haven't a clue what this error means. Best i can see the field it refers to is completed.

Field/Xpath: /efile:Return[1]/efile:ReturnData[1]/efile:IRSW2[1]/efile:WagesAmt[1]
Issue : The XML data has failed schema validation.

For me, I want to finish my taxes as soon as possible so I know how much I owe the government. Until I do that I can't know how much I have extra to invest. Of course I still won't actually pay them the money till the deadline :).

See if your question is answered about two-thirds of the way down in the "Field/Xpath Errors" section of the following document:
