Bogleheads:

I posted this on another topic:
Re: What kind of people show up at a Bogleheads chapter meeting?

digarei:

I remember the first Southeast Florida Chapter Boglehead meeting in our Miami condominium. We considered moving valuable nick-knacks out of the living room for fear they might be stolen.

It was one of the dumbest thoughts I ever had. We never had a nicer group of people in our home.

Best wishes.

I could potentially attend a meeting, although I am not sure, but don't think I can help with organizing this time around. Time seems to be perpetually crunched lately. I know clevername has been very busy too.

I'm game to meet up on a weekend some time, but I've been crazy busy lately so I can't organize anything. Even low key events can be tricky to coordinate so I'd rather not bite of something that I can't really commit to. I'm definitely interested though so maybe someone can step up and get something together - sorry it can't be me :/ See you all soon hopefully.

The South Florida Chapter is preparing for a meeting, but with this 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity, we move slowly 8-) 8-)

BOGLEHEADS LOOKING FOR A MEETING PLACE

Post by Taylor Larimore » Sat Jun 20, 2015 8:25 pm

Southeast Florida Bogleheads:

Our last meeting was in Miami. We have been asked to hold our next meeting further north to accommodate Bogleheads living in Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach.

Anyone willing to offer their home or business for our next meeting, preferably on a Sunday? Mariam2 has volunteered to help prepare. I'll pay for a home lunch.

Best wishes.

The email address is sflbogleheads@gmail.com - check your spelling.

I just logged in to that account for the first time in a while and found an eye popping amount of interest and support for our local chapter. I apologize for my inattentiveness in recent months and will take some time this week replying to everyone and helping to coordinate the meeting next month. Thank you all for your patience and interest, stand by for further updates.

"bogleheads" is misspelled and that's your problem. If you're gonna be one, you gotta learn how to spell it. :D

Post by clevername » Mon Jun 29, 2015 9:32 pm

I just sent a group email to everyone who has ever emailed sflbogleheads@gmail.com in the last two years. It's looking good for Sunday July 26 in Ft Lauderdale but the time and location is still tentative based on interest, availability, location of the majority of attendees, willingness to travel, etc.

If you haven't done so already, please send an email to sflbogleheads@gmail.com with your approximate location, number of people in your party expecting to go, etc and stay tuned for further updates. I won't spam you, it's just for roll call and easier communication etc. I think there's a lot of interest and we might have a fairly large turnout so we'll need to plan diligently.

Thank you!

South Florida Bogleheads! 8-)

Just a reminder that our meeting is scheduled for this Sunday, July 26, 2015, from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. in Ft. Lauderdale.

Marisara has generously offered her office for our meeting and we have a nice room.

Apparently Taylor's portfolio is doing quite well because he has offered to pay for our food and drinks :happy

Our fearless leader, clevername, is putting together the program - have a topic?? send him a PM or email at sflbogleheads@gmail.com.
For those who already signed up, you should have received a confirmation email from clevername with the address. If not, let him know.
There is still space available, just PM or email clevername, or PM me if you are coming.

Looking forward to a wonderful meeting!

Myself and guest had a great time hearing others Boglehead journey.

Special thanks to President Clevername and the Boglehead Sage Taylor Larimore for organizing and putting this together.

Also, thanks to members that donated the wonderful conference room and excellent location.

The South Florida Chapter had a wonderful meeting this past Sunday with 24 Bogleheads, including a very special guest - without whom none of us - I really mean NONE of us - would be here right now. His name is Larry Auton, co-founder of this forum.

First, we can now report another reason why Taylor's portfolio is doing quite well.
Prior to the meeting, Taylor needed to know the number of Bogleheads who were coming - because he would be bringing one Subway sandwich - ONE sandwich, not two, not a few extra - ONE sandwich for each person.
He nixed the potato salad. He nixed the cole slaw. He even nixed the potato chips.
He is not only remarkably smart, kind, helpful and wonderful, he is also frugal!
The sandwiches WERE delicious, and we thank you Taylor for feeding us well 8-)

Taylor missed no opportunity to remind us to stay the course with low cost index funds, and he brandished the current issue of Money magazine with a feature story on Jack Bogle, vindicating index fund investing.

Our surprise guest was Larry Auton, the Boglehead Forum's server admin - without whom we would not exist.
Larry was in South Florida the day the Forum server slowed waaaay down last Friday. When Taylor contacted him about the slow server and found out Larry was in South Florida, Taylor invited him to our meeting.

What can I say - it was like being in the room with the King of England and Sir Winston Churchill

Want to know how Larry became a Boglehead? That was back in the Morningstar Vanguard Diehard days. He told us he was at a "career junction" when, what he called "a big bucket of money," fell into his lap. He knew that would never happen again and he had to invest it wisely. So he researched and learned about investing, came upon Jack Bogle's books and Vanguard, dumped his bucket of money into Vanguard funds and "has not turned the knobs since."

He looked at all of us and repeated slowly: "Have not turned the knobs once. Do not turn those knobs!"

Larry described how he and Alex created this Forum website (you can read it on the Wiki). It's easy to be spell-bound by Larry's computer savvy, but he's such an understated fellow, he said: "It's really only a website, it's just a website, it could be anything. It's the people using it that make it phenomenal." It was obvious to all of us how special this Forum is to him.

Many, many warm thanks to Taylor and Larry for the wonderful meeting! :D

Also, at our South Florida Boglehead meeting, we had a fascinating discussion led by Boglehead Charlie H., a former SEC bulldog, about investment fraud. Thank you Charlie!

And again, thanks to Marisara, we had the perfect room for our meeting, and to Kathleen, who logged in several miles running back and forth to the door to let everyone in, and to our chapter leader Clevername, for moderating the meeting and pulling the curtain, or we would have stayed all day. 8-)

Hi. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a CFP (or CFA) advisor recommendation in Miami.

Since last year, I’ve been managing my family’s US domiciled brokerage account with the help of a broker. I’ve been selling off risky positions such as high yield bonds and individual stocks and moving toward passive buy and hold index funds (VTI). However, after discussing it with my family, we’ve decided to move on from the broker model toward a CFP Advisor as recommended in Bogleheads Guide to Investing (no conflict of interest).

Given our needs, the advisor must meet the following criteria:

- CFP certified (or CFA)
- Fee-only: we want someone whose incentives match ours
- Must follow the bogleheads philosophy (3 fund passive investing) and has experience implementing it
- Experience working with Non US Citizens, especially Latin America clients. This is important because of taxes, estate planning, etc. We want our investments to be done in a transparent way to avoid unexpected taxes and fees.

Personally, I would like a CFP advisor with the passive buy and hold mentality of the bogleheads. He should be able to lay out a formal investment plan based on the family’s risk preference and make recommendations with regards to its implementation.

To this point, I have found the following options for fee based CFPs in the Miami area (zip code 33131):
http://www.cfp.net/utility/find-a-cfp-p ... l/Results/

I also have this list of NAPFA fee only advisor firms:
http://findanadvisor.napfa.org/Home.aspx/Search

If anyone in the forum has worked with any of these CFPs or companies and is willing to recommend them, please let me know. This would be very helpful. You could also recommend CFAs or advisors that are not in this list but who could nonetheless help me with an investment plan.

Thank you.
