I have learned (and continue to learn) a lot from many nice well informed people here on Bogleheads. Also, sometimes I get a good laugh out of it.

Because life is complicated. Taxes, risk management, life cycle events. Setting your asset allocation and forgetting it is a theoretical goal. But like cruise control on a car, you can’t just set it and doze off.

I don't spend all my time here but I definitely spend some time here. I do that because I learn here. I've learned a great deal about simplifying my investments, tax efficient investing, tax loss harvesting, ideas for better places to hold our HSAs, how DAFs work, withdrawal options for retirement, and the list goes on and on. Often times I read about something here and then go on to research the topic elsewhere. The Bogleheads forum is the best resource I know of for discussing and learning about personal finances.

No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
Almost, at times, the Fool.

I gained some specialized knowledge about life insurance and annuities during my working career.

I’m happy to share my thoughts about these products with others.

And, now that I’m no longer employed, I can say what I REALLY think about some of the awful products that some life insurers sell.

I've learned a great deal about many things--not merely investing. So much is on this site. And lots of very informed and smart people--I'm always hoping a bit of that stuff will rub off. I pop in almost daily, sometimes twice a day. Just to see if there's something that catches my eye. I was surprised the past week in talking with two Vanguard reps centered in Vally Forge that they didn't know about this site, nor about the Bogleheads. They do now.

Yup, that’s the nutshell. But Bogleheads also has some fascinating economics and big finance discussions I learn a lot from. Plus, the consumer issue discussions are the best on the web.

All of my time? Well, not that much really, but as noted up above, the discussions are intelligent and useful. While I can hold my own in a discussion of the taxation of tithables in colonial Virginia and how to interpret the surviving lists, or a discussion of the more esoteric aspects of Hening's Statutes at Large, I can't hold a candle to the knowledge of the members here when it comes to investing. If this were a history forum or a gardening forum, I'd be spending more time on i

This place is great for specific questions that occasionally come up related to personal finance or taxes.

Also, it’s a treasure trove of real life examples of human psychology sabotaging otherwise well-thought out, reasonable investing plans. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory type of stuff. I learn more from these types of threads than anything else. Helps me recognize my own personal biases and limitations so that hopefully I don’t make the same mistakes going forward.

I found Bogleheads during the lowest point of my life, halfway through my PhD and in the middle of a divorce that was emotionally and (at the time) financially devastating. The divorce was almost completely about money, I wanted to learn everything I could to set myself up for the future and to protect myself. I'm in a completely different place a decade late; happily married with two kids and pretty darn close to financially independent. Logging onto Bogleheads is just part of my routine at this point.

I browse a couple times a week but I don’t post very often. Mostly I’m here to get a chuckle about people worrying about whether their kid should go to Harvard vs. MIT, a 3-car garage is necessary to exist, or they can afford a $1.2M house with an annual income of $600K.

One real financial impact Bogleheads has made on my life in the past couple of years was the refi thread—at the time it prodded me into action. It was very nice to have recommendations and data of what rates other people were getting.

Edited to add:

I spend a lot of time on this forum; but not all of my time. Sometime it’s a waste of time. For me it’s often a diversion. But the upside is that there’s a lot to learn here, a lot of financial and investment knowledge to track, and plenty of handy advice from interesting people.
