This is indeed sad news. My condolences, LadyGeek.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with this journey. This is a new field for me to learn, and one that many do not speak of widely. My paternal aunt just passed away, and my parents have offered to help her daughter with the details. Perhaps this will help give me the opening I need to discuss their plans (and the need for planning) with them. Your lessons give me somewhere to start.

I would love to have some funeral home directors/owners weigh in here. This has become an industry that takes advantage of bereaved relatives who might not want or have the mental stamina to negotiate or ask important questions. Fortunately, I didn't have this situation, but I am thinking of what I should do so my children are informed.

I realize I am getting off topic here, which is the passing of your husband.

This should probably be a separate thread.

In the meantime, Lady Geek, I hope to see you at the next Bogleheads meeting, if I am able to attend the next one.

Dear LadyGeek,

Words are difficult to find to express condolences. I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your husband.

Thank you. Thank you for being there for us at the conference during a time that's so difficult for you.

Also thank you for sharing a bit about your family's experience at this time and the information to help others deal with some of the financial aspects of losing your dear spouse.

Your words about the hospice care really hit home for me personally. My mother was a hospice nurse and she once gave me some advice when my father-in-law had had a stroke and we knew that we would lose him. We, the children, wondered if extraordinary treatment for him would be the right way to handle what might come. My mother-in-law wanted it, the children were not so sure. My mother said that supporting the spouse who is making the decisions is so important because she would think about these decisions for the rest of her days. This little re-focus from the patient to the surviving spouse made it easier for the children to accept that she would know what was best for my father-in-law and the family. They were very fortunate to spend more days together then we all expected.

Hospice care is so important and the people who do this work are angels. I hope your days become easier and thank you again for all you do for us.

It does take a special person to devote their career to hospice.

Before my husband went on hospice, I had some detailed conversations with the doctors regarding the PA Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form. What's that? It's the state of Pennsylvania standard advanced care directive, which is legally binding. Although I had my own Advanced Care Directive with me, every facility that my husband was admitted required me to complete that PA form.

As his final days approached, those forms became much more real. There were a few sections that were obvious to complete, but a few required some thought and discussion. Doctors interpret those forms differently than an untrained person, so take the time to discuss that form with someone who is following your case. We ended up writing-in a few instructions (the form lets you do that). Also, you can change that form at any time.

So, supporting the spouse who makes the decisions is a good approach.
