Hi, I just joined Bogleheads today and looked for a Rhode Island chapter. Did you ever get one started? I am located in Providence.

Right now I'm in RI though.

Another inquiry for RI -- was a chapter ever started?

OK, you now have four Bogleheads who are interested in starting a RI chapter. All you need is one more person to express an interest and one of you to agree to be the Local Chapter Coordinator. That person doesn't have to be an investment guru; rather, the local chapter coordinator simply schedules the meetings and notifies the members of the place and time.

If you get that fifth member, whoever agrees to be the coordinator can contact me via PM with your name and e-mail address (I'd suggest a gmail or yahoo address used for just this purpose) and I'll give your group the next available Local Chapter # and add your group and contact information to the Diehards Local Chapters Map so others can find you.

Good luck in getting the fifth person so you can get the chapter going.

Still waiting for one of you Rhode Islanders to step forward and let me know via PM that you'll agree to be the Local Chapter coordinator. As I stated previously, that person doesn't have to be an investment guru; rather, the local chapter coordinator simply schedules the meetings and notifies the members of the place and time.

Anyone interested? Just PM me with your name and the e-mail address you want to use for this purpose (suggest a throw-away google or yahoo e-mail address that you[ll use specifically for this purpose since it will be public).

Someone contact me so we can get this chapter off the ground.

Providence/RI Metro Group, and Meeting January 14th

Post by tarmangani »

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]

Hi all,

An fyi--we're thinking of starting a Providence/RI Boglehead chapter, provided there's enough interest. Forum legend siamond will be coming to the East Providence Public Library (41 Grove Ave, East Providence ofc) at 7:00 PM on January 14th, weather permitting, to provide an introduction to Bogleheadism. It's a pretty introductory lecture designed for the general public, but it'd be great if you'd be willing to come and express interest in starting a chapter. Some folks on staff at the library are interested in starting the chapter, and this lecture could be a nice way for us to meet one another.

Cheers, and hope to see you there.

All righty, if the OP promises to stop making me blush, I'll try to make it too...

I plan to discuss the basics of passive investing and the basics of asset allocation (e.g. 3 or 4 funds portfolio). I'm happy to chat afterwards for as long as people wish. And yes, it would be great to have a few more experienced people in the room to help interact with the new attendees.

Very good turnout last night for siamond's talk. As usual he did a great job. It's always nice to receive an empirically-supported refresher of the basics.

As we got over 10 signatures for a chapter, I'm going to contact Mel to get it started. Note that going forward we will likely be meeting on Saturdays (same location, Weaver library) in the morning-ish, and we're aiming for quarterly meetings. If you're interested in joining and didn't pass your email address to us last night, please pm me.

32 attendees! I was VERY impressed. Quite a successful community outreach. By all means, let's try to leverage on this early success.

On an administrative note, should this thread be merged with the earlier one? Rhode Island Chapter Established

I didn't want to combine the threads if this is a different chapter.

Hi folks,

We're having a chapter meeting this Saturday (March 30th) from at 10:00 am at the East Providence Public Library (Weaver location, 41 Grove Ave). There will be a talk about tax-efficient fund placement. Even if this topic does not interest you, please come, as the talk itself only serves as a way to anchor the morning's meeting. The meeting allows us all an opportunity to network and meet/speak with one another. Refreshments will be provided, and you can even has as many books as you can feasibly carry.*

*Library card permitting.

Thanks to all who came last Saturday. We had I thought a nice crowd, and it was great to meet and talk to other Bogleheads. I'll be emailing out my presentation to attendees later this week.

As I mentioned, we're looking for volunteers to present. Our next meeting's June 22nd at 10:00 AM, same place (East Providence Public Library, 41 Grove Ave). For those who don't know, by the way, you can also park "in the back" in the library's actual lot by taking North Carpenter to Orchard St.

Also, I'd like to apologize to those members who had emailed the chapter (ribogles@mail.com) and had never received a response. I had a typo in what address emails were forwarding to, so I never got those emails. I've now added you folks to our mailing list. Incidentally, for those who'd inquired about it, there's nothing you need to do to become a member other than attend the meetings. Again, all comers at all experience levels are welcome.

It was a pleasure to meet and greet other Bogleheads in person, and the presentation was excellent, thank you Mike. The group and individual discussions afterward were very enlightening as well. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next meeting. I am still a 'newbie', and still learning!

One observation I had in hindsight: I felt some folks might have missed out on some of the discussed information when we broke up into small chat groups (quite randomly, not planned). I might suggest trying to extend the post presentation discussion for everyone to get involved. It can be intimidating for some folks to ask questions in a group, but that should be encouraged.

Hi folks,

I've added a few new people to our mailing list (welcome). I am pasting here the press release for our meeting on the 22nd. I hope you can come. To randtor's point, I agree that discussion should be promoted, especially for a new group where the members don't know each other well. So, the meeting will be anchored around the below topic, which I will introduce, and we will be sharing information. Please come a bit extroverted and willing to share your thoughts (I say this, by the way, as someone on the Myers-Briggs indicator that is like 90% introversion).

We will also distribute an agenda to plan the next two meetings and their topics of discussion. I have I think two volunteers ready to go for those presentations, but I want to confirm with them.

We hope you will join us at the second meeting of the Providence-Metro Boglehead Chapter on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Weaver Library. We will use this meeting to get to know one another a little better and to share information on upcoming presentations. We will also discuss the following:

Sharing the Good Word
Saturday, June 22, 2019 10am -12pm

Sharing the Good Word about the Bogleheads and investment can be challenging. What are rhetorically effective and persuasive ways to spread the Word? We've all benefited from others sharing with us. How can we do the same for our children, grandkids, spouses, friends and maybe even (though not at all recommended!) in-laws.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the 22nd!

You had me look it up on Wikipedia... Yep, this is definitely a significant shortage of this type of rhetoric nowadays in some contexts...

Good morning folks,

We'll be meeting next Saturday (the 21st) @10am @Weaver in East Providence again. This time we'll have a presentation on the Rule of 72 from someone (mercifully) other than yours truly; refreshments, general conversation, as usual, to be expected.

Hope to see you there~

Start a new thread asking if there's any intetest in starting a new Local Chapter in your city/area.

If you get five or more and one of you agrees to be the local Chapter Coordinator, I'll make your group official and add you to the Local Chapters Map so others can find and contact you.

Our next Metro-Boston meeting will be on Saturday May 9th, 10:15am to 12:30. It will be an online meeting, based on Zoom. All details will be shared by e-mail. Participants from Rhode Island are welcome to join.

The agenda will be the following:
1. A presentation about Investing Basics
2. An open discussion about the ongoing crisis

Most of you will be familiar with the material from the first presentation, the intent is two-fold:
a) an opportunity to invite family members and acquaintances who are new to passive investing
b) to give you some material to help you speak by yourself with newbies
