Oklahoma City (OKC) Bogleheads Local Chapter

Post by petulant »

Welcome to the local Oklahoma City (OKC) Bogleheads chapter. We started out mainly because of my deep sense of rivalry with Tulsa--if they have one, we should too!

A small number of us met on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at All About Cha in Bricktown. We had a good discussion learning about our different phases of life and investing.

We didn't have a meeting in March, nor will we do so in April. Right now my plan is to pause all meetings for the OKC chapter until the coronavirus emergency wraps up. That said, if there's a lot of interest here in a conference call or videochat meeting, please post and I will try to set it up. Until then, stay safe and healthy everybody!

As an update, we have a total of three interested--stw, myself, and another in a PM. Come out of the woodwork, OKC people--if Tulsa has one, we should have a bigger one! >:D

We have enough to start a new chapter! Why don't we set up a first meeting? We could have interested people introduce themselves and talk a little bit about their interest in the group.

Would people be available on a Saturday afternoon for the meeting? I would think May 4 would be a good day.

Also, what part of the metro is everybody in? I am in central OKC, and I think that's probably a good area if we've got people from Norman and Edmond both interested.

I am in northwest OKC, but have no problem driving to anywhere in the metro. Saturday late afternoon or early evening is usually good (If spouses are invited!).

Looks like you have enough to make it official. If you'd like to be the Local Chapter Coordinator (looks like you're already doing the job, setting up the meeting), PM me with your first name and an emai address you'll use for this purpose.

I suggest something like OKCityBogleheads@gmail.com.

Once I have that info, I'll add tha to the Local Chapters Map so others can find and contact you.

Let's make your group official.

Right now I have heard from slightly more central/NW OKC people than others, so I'm thinking that might be the best...Kamp's at 10th and Oklahoma might be a good spot since it's very close to I-235 for Norman/Edmond people.

May 4 is what I am thinking. Maybe at 3:00 in the afternoon?

If it is Saturday, May 4, I would not be available until after 4:30 pm because of work. Then again, I can't be 100% as far as attendance until I double check family plans/kids schedules.

Well since we're meeting at Kamp's at 3:00 you can order food, but I don't plan to eat. They do have a full bar and a cafe too.

EDIT: Thanks to those who came to the inaugural meeting today! We introduced ourselves and spoke a little bit about our Bogleheads journeys--we range from those more recently starting with serious saving (like myself) all the way up to a retiree.

Right now I would like to target a monthly meeting for our chapter. I will target a Saturday in late June--I'm eyeballing June 22 at 4:30PM (central) for now. This time we might shoot for a meeting in Elemental Coffee, again in beautiful midtown OKC. Please let me know know by June 1 if you have any issues with this time! I'm also putting up a poll to look at topics. You can access it here:

https://doodle.com/poll/tm4d8bak6cptembc

NOTE: If you vote, it will ask for your name. I encourage you to enter your username.

So Kamps is okay with a bunch of people showing up and not buying anything? I thought that was what restrooms at Starbucks were for?

Like I said, Kamp's has a cafe and a full bar. All of us came in during an empty Saturday afternoon and bought drinks from the cafe. I guess some of us are more familiar with coffeeshops than others.

Thanks, Petulant! Great meeting yesterday. Nice location, very pleasant. I really enjoyed the discussion, such a pleasure!

And, though I don't usually hang out in coffee shops, I did enjoy a decaf latte with whipped cream and a splash of caramel from a very nice barista -- sweet.

I'm looking forward to the next meeting on 22 June.

Sorry to hear that. Since we are just getting going, perhaps we should consider another meeting sooner. I had been thinking monthly.

Just a suggestion: Petulant (& All), would it be too soon to have one in about two weeks, Saturday, 18 May? The following weekend, 25-27 May, is Memorial Day weekend. I will be unavailable the first two weekends in June and July, but if those are the best times for others I will just look forward to catching up in August.

Thanks again for the OKC chapter!

Well, based on the time doodle, we will meet again on Saturday, June 15, at 2:00pm (central).

I propose we meet at Elemental Coffee (815 N Hudson Ave, OKC, OK 73102) at the selected time.

Based on the topic doodle, this month we will talk about tilting to small, value, and other factors. The agenda would therefore be...

1. Briefly recap the last meeting
2. Introductions for new attendees
3. Discuss tilting to small, value, and other factors
4. Any other issues

...although we will have a flexible and laid back environment.

Hope everybody can make it!

Thanks to everybody that could make it to the monthly meeting today! We had a very interesting discussion about adding factor tilts, especially value and small factors. Elemental Coffee was a great venue with good coffee and friendly staff (at least I thought :D ).

Here are the doodles for the topic and date/time of the July meeting. I'll collect the responses at the end of June and set the schedule.

Based on the polls, we'll meet on Saturday, July 27 at 2:00PM. Let's meet again at Kamp's 1910 Cafe, which is at 10 NE 10th Street in the heart of Oklahoma City.

For this month's topic we'll discuss international allocation (saving stock-bond for a time when arensin is available). But we will have a laidback environment and can introduce new members, discuss any questions people have, and just have a good time in general.

Hope to see you there on July 27!

FYI everybody--I had a recent death in the family and will be at the funeral on Saturday. I have asked a regular attendee to help guide the meeting on Saturday, but if he can't make it, I'm hoping somebody else steps up. There has been some strong interest from new attendees in the meeting, so I am optimistic that you all can have a strong meeting without me.

Hello, petulant. So sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you and the rest of the family are doing okay.

We did have an excellent meeting, with six people total (four first-timers). We spent most of the time introducing ourselves and talking a little about our work backgrounds and investing experience. We did talk about US vs international and stock/bond allocations. Quite a nice variety of approaches and personal backgrounds, in my opinion. For example, two of us are 50/50 US/International, and two are 100/0. Many roads to Dublin.

Thanks again for organizing the group and the meetings. Hope to see you next month. Kind regards to you and your family.

You Know What I Mean -- thank you for reporting back. Glad to hear the meeting went well. I have created some new doodle polls for the August meeting. I will review the results of the polls and set a time around August 7.

Here's a poll for time and date:

Here's a poll for topics:

Once the poll concludes, I'll post a new date, time, location, and topic. Otherwise, hope you all have a good start to your August!

P.S. Don't forget to list your username rather than your real name when responding to polls!

Thank you all to those who voted. Based on the results, we'll meet on Saturday, August 17, at 1:00pm. I propose that we meet at Leaf + Bean, 321 N Oklahoma Ave, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We'll talk about Boglehead principles this time, focusing mainly on staying the course.

For those who like to hear and learn different perspectives on bonds, international, and other investments, it can be tricky to know when to stay the course versus making a shift in light of a slightly more persuasive argument. We'll talk about that and more.

This afternoon a few of us had our August meeting. We met at Leaf + Bean (321 N Oklahoma Ave in Oklahoma City), introduced ourselves, discussed some issues important to us, and talked about staying the course. For some of us tinkering seemed like a danger, and we talked about simplicity and using decision points to reduce the risk of unhelpful tinkering.

For next month's meeting, I have set up some polls to set the time and topic. Please have a look and around September 1 I'll check and set up the meeting details. The topics are either official principles or sub-listings in principles from the Bogleheads investment philosophy wiki page.

For the meeting time: https://doodle.com/poll/nv2i8tdg8n4r6gxk
For the topic: https://doodle.com/poll/ayv5z7dz7ydg6ddy

Remember to list your username, not your real name, when you vote. And please try to mark a few different options so we can try to have the greatest possible overlap.

Otherwise, hope everybody has a great rest of their August and wonderful Labor Day!

Remember to list your username, not your real name, when you vote. And please try to mark a few different options so we can try to have the greatest possible overlap.

Otherwise, hope everybody has a great rest of their August and wonderful Labor Day!
Hope you're all doing okay after the severe weather last week. Since we didn't get any responses to the poll for September, I am cancelling the September meeting. The same links all work to vote for October meeting topics and times.

I'll check back around October 1 and see where we're at. Thanks.
