My Christmas Present To You

Post by Taylor Larimore » Sat Dec 22, 2018 1:43 pm

Bogleheads:

Seventy-four years ago, on Christmas Eve, during the Battle of the Bulge, I was a 20-year old scared paratrooper in a snow-covered foxhole protecting the important transportation town of Bastogne, Belgium.

My foxhole was in the front yard of the Steveler family who brought me warm food and hot-chocolate between the fighting. The Germans had us surrounded and demanded our surrender. Our commander said "Nuts." You can read about it here:

A Freedom Shrine Document -- This is my Christmas present to you.

Note: This Christmas is special because I have invited my Miami family and descendants of the Steveler family to join me for Christmas together in the Bahamas aboard the cruise ship, Majesty of the Seas.

I wish you were with us.

Best wishes.

Taylor,
Thank you for your service.
And also the "cold" beverages that you served me when I visited you a few years ago. I feel honored to have met you.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

When I lived in my former town there was a decorated hero of the Battle of the Bulge. I knew his sons well. He, however never talked about his service, but it came up after a newspaper interview he did some years ago. He was a very quiet, unassuming man, but did great things when duty called. He came back to small town NH never raising a flag to what he did because it was in the past. I'm glad some people speak up as we who are not a hero of that type would like to say thanks for your service. Taylor thank-you.

Although I've never met you, I assume from your posts that you are very much like the WW II vets I got to know at the American Legion Post where I was a member. These guys were very matter-of-fact about the incredible things they had done (going ashore at Normandy, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, having their ships sunk from beneath them, doing sub patrols in the Pacific, tail-gunning over Germany, etc.) and to a man said they were just doing a job that had to be done. When the war was over they returned home and built lives that Tom Brokaw documented so well in his book. Thanks for all you've done, Taylor, both in uniform, in the years thereafter and In your efforts to spread the gospel of sensible investing. Merry Christmas and enjoy your reunion!

Taylor,

I was thinking about your WWII service and thinking that I needed to thank you.

From a second generation paratrooper to one of the first, thank you for your sacrifice. Also thank you for your dedication to spreading the word about low cost index investing. You have been a consistent voice of reason.

Merry Christmas and God bless you.
