Fiduciary rule or not, it is the responsibility of the investor to make sure they are getting good advice. Whether it's your family, friend, neighbor, Edward Jones guy, or Bogleheads, it is a personal decision and you should be in control.

At the very least all this news has exposed many more people to what a fiduciary is and why it is important.

Someone told me that an advisor who was trying to get their business asked to see the expense ratios of their 401(k) that was to be rolled over. Since the expense ratios of the index funds used in the 401(k) were sub 0.20%, the advisor said something like "I won't be able to change those funds for you" which I was very surprised about. But the other assets not in a retirement account were fair game for the advisor.
