Forum's 11th Birthday - Feb. 19th

Post by Mel Lindauer » Sun Feb 04, 2018 7:07 pm

Hello Everyone:

On Feb. 19, 2007, a number of folks signed up to get this new Bogleheads forum up and running. For the math challenged, that means this coming Feb. 19, 2018, the forum will be 11 years old (being one of the math challenged, I used a calculator to verify that). :)

In those 11 years, we've put up some mind-boggling numbers:

* We now have over 68,000 registered members.
* Those members have made nearly 3.7 million posts on nearly a
quarter million topics.
* We've had as many a 1790 folks online at the same time.
* There are usually about 10 visitors or "lurkers" for each
registered member online at any one time.
* Visitors and posters come from all over the world.
* We now have 72 Bogleheads Local Chapters, including four
foreign chapters (Paris, Taiwan, UAE/Dubai and Hong Kong).
* The forum's Wiki is an amazing resource. It's a reservoir of
information on just about any investing-related topic one can
think of. It's constantly being expanded and the existing
information is updated when needed.

So on this special day, I want to thank Larry, Alex, all the other Admins and Moderators, and you, the members, for contributing. Together, we've made this forum the best investing site on the Internet where folks can come, knowing they'll get solid, unbiased information from folks who aren't selling anything.

An early Happy Birthday, Bogleheads.org forum! :sharebeer

Thank you, Mel, for your reminder of how far we have come in eleven years.

I don't know anywhere else on the internet where investors, new or experienced, can receive investment information with no commercial advertising and that is free of conflict-of-interest (which pervades the investment industry).

My thanks to all the Bogleheads who contribute their time and experience to help others on their road to investment success.

Best wishes.

All,

I am relatively new to this forum, but owe all of you an immense debt of gratitude. Since joining this forum, I have radically restructured my portfolio, developed an AA, Terminated my FA, and Retired.

Thank you for providing this awesome resource. I wish I had discovered it earlier (my sign-up date doesn't reflect a few years of lurking, but I still feel like a newbie, constantly learning), but even so the impact on my financial well-being has been enormous. This thread reminded me that a small financial contribution from me was overdue. It's on the way. :beer

I consider the forum to have stated in 1998 on M*. Which means the forum celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

No wait, that's 21st anniversary. (2018 - 1998 = 20. But we don't want the "difference" in years, but total years so must add +1.)

So 20th or 21st, it's one of those. :)

Yes, that's true. We were "born" on Morningstar in 1998 and moved out on our own in 2007, so your math is correct.

Mel,

Many thanks to you, Tom, Paul, the selfless conference volunteers, and our Bogleheads family for the integrity, wit, and wisdom of the forum for these eleven years. Rare enough to find wise folks, just as rare to find men and women of such candor and honesty. Happily for my family and
me, I've found both, in the Bogleheads, at that happy intersection of wisdom and virtue. I am, among men, most richly blessed.
With profound gratitude to you and my fellow Bogleheads.

Semper Fi,

Thank you to everyone responsible. I've learned so much from this site, and not only about investments, going back to the Morningstar days.

To all those responsible for this wonderful forum, I say a hearty

Thank You.

I appreciate your time, efforts, expertise.

And as always, a very hearty โ€œThank Youโ€ to Jack Bogle.
Jack, you have done more for individual investors than anyone.

We all appreciate what you have done to level the playing playing field for individual investors.

Again to BH forum founders and administrators and Jack...my Thanks.

Congratulations to all. I would simply point out what I see as perhaps the greatest impact here: by helping so many people become financially literate...this forum has created a cascading legacy. By that I mean all of the other people beyond the forum (kids, parents, friends) who have benefited from those who found the forum and as a result got smarter and made better choices.

In my case, that "cascade" helped (and is helping) my widowed mother with retirement, my siblings with investment fundamentals, my son's college funding, several friends who needed help, and the charities I can support at a greater level. I'll bet everyone in this forum can come up with their own list.

Thank you.

OK
My question is
where were our Bogleheads accommodated before 2007?

Of course there is a wiki article to answer that question, see The Bogleheadsยฎ. The short answer, on a Morningstar forum as Diehards.

Oh YES. Happy Birthday. I remember the movement from the M* Diehards. Thank you all.
Diehards began, according to my calendar, on March 19, 1998. I found it in early August that year, 2 months before I was to retire. They saved my retirement.....I knew nothing (I thought I did, but I didn't.) I read Taylor, I read Mel, and more. I remember, vividly, dear Taylor chastising me in early 2000 for taking out too much from my investments in 1999, my first year retiree. THANKS Taylor. I can't imagine where I would be financially today, almost 20 years retired,....NO, I can imagine and it ain't pretty.

Thanks to all of those who got this going, but I thank all of the rest of you as well.

And, please consider, all of you, donating to keep this going. At least buy all of your Amazon purchases by connecting from the Amazon links here as we get a little bit from that.

Thank you and God Bless.

The forum started right about the time the financial crisis shifted to first gear. That probably helped to achieve critical mass at the new home!

Congratulations from your sister forum north of the border on 11 years of continuing the amazing work of Jack Bogle. Today, February 18th, the Financial Wisdom Forum happens to be celebrating our 13th year of helping and educating Canadian investors.

To all those who are members of both forums, thank you as well for your contributions north and south of the 49th parallel.
