I am joining the ranks of the “class of 2018” and plan to retire on December 28. I will be 56. The one more year syndrome and a sense of obligation to the company held me in place for several years, but it’s time to be done.

Congratulations to others who have retired, and to those who will join the ranks in 2018!

David Jay has recently given me a retirement literacy tutorial :D. It is just settling in my head that I can retire this year. If I do, the date would be September to reach an anniversary date and a bit better retirement benefits. Just need to let it bake in my head a bit.

After running the numbers 'til I couldn't see them anymore, then running them past the wonderful, insightful, and generous Boglehead crew, I've decided to take the plunge at 56. My date is Nov 1st. Only ~6 more months - people say "oh the time will fly," but it sure doesn't feel that way. I have so many better things to do.
I. Cannot. Wait.

I've decided it's time. I'm planning to make Friday, July 13 my final day (which somehow seems appropriate). I'll be 47.

After only one OMY (one more year), which was a really miserable year, I did it Next week is my final week. My co-workers have remarked they've never seen me so happy. My want to do list keeps getting longer and longer. I feel like I could be busier without a job than with one!

we'll be ok remommyc. thanks for asking

There was a lot of discontent and management upheaval last year, so everyone has been on borrowed time, so to speak. Exiting a year or two earlier than I had planned, but such is life. Will actively look for a senior level job, but with ageism being what it is, not sure how successful I will be. But hey, the upside is that I have an extra couple years for Roth conversions! :greedy

remomnyc - Congratulations on making it through One More Year :beer Your last week will sail by, enjoy your retirement well-wishes, say your good-byes - and good riddances :P - then tell the boss you're punching out and looking forward to a well-deserved retirement.

Does it count if I’m going to be a stay at home parent starting June 2018?

We’ve hit our numbers but my spouse is planning to enjoy the work gig for a few more years. I can’t complain since it’s nice to have the healthcare and it pads our numbers.

I’m in my late 30s now so perhaps this might be like a test run and I'll reevaluate as the kid gets older. But it’s nice to feel like I don’t have to.

Bayview,

Don't stay on the job if making TSP contributions is your only hurdle. I retired on March 31st and compressed my full $24,500 in TSP contributions into the eight pay periods I had in 2018. If you'd like, you can accelerate your TSP contributions. The biggest downside is you'll not receive the government match for the full year.

Welcome to the retirement club! So far, I'm far busier than I thought I'd be.

In 2013 transitioned to part time, to kinda part time, to hardly any time. Now in 2018 officially no time = retired. The glide path worked well for us. Now age 58.

Retiring on May 31, 2018!

I can legally say I retired at 55 although I am turning 56 in June. Result of early planning and sage wisdom from my father.

I actually did not know my father was a bogglehead, but it became apparent after he had passed away and I found most of his savings were in VG. However, when I think of retirement and my father, I remember as he approached age 65 in the late '90s he started selling his TI stock (the company he would retire from after 30years) and moving to much lower risk funds. With great discipline he ignored the tech frenzy and followed the rules he had learned as a lifetime member of AAII.

Personally, I am trying to follow his steps by ridding myself of bad investment habits and reallocating funds along the bogglehead approach.

Enjoyed your story about your father :happy It's interesting, but I've met several Bogleheads who began their investing learning with AAII (The American Association of Individual Investors) which seemed at that time to be one of the few ways to learn investing from other like-minded individual investors, rather than from your broker

And utkenb, what "bad investment habits" do you have, or is it too embarrassing to even mention

I informed my two bosses (one for money, one for operations) earlier this week that I would be retiring between the end of August and end of November 2018. The discussions went a lot better than I had thought! Later in the week they made a couple calls and a couple emails regarding some plans for my replacement and then the cat got out of the bag big-time. So no date yet, but I have a solid range and the wheels are turning for a decent transition. I passed up an early retirement offer this spring (no incentives - just waived some of the penalties) as it would have been terrible timing work-wise and it really wasn't in the my personal plan either. I've have had end of August 2018 on my calendar for retirement since 1990! :happy

Great! We penciled you in for the end of August and if your plans change, we'll update on re-boot.

Sounds like you have all your retirement ducks in line with good communication, ease of transition, personal plans, whew since 1990!! and even the cat out of the bag! Now all you need is a HUGE retirement party - how about THIS ?? 8-)

I will be joining the 2018 Class on Friday, September 28. At that point, i will have just achieved 40 years with my employer, which has been a personal goal of mine. I will also be hitting 65 years of age during October 2018, and need to retire before Medicare eligibility to keep my spouse on company insurance until she joins a future Class. My daughter tells me that I will be blessed with a 5th grandchild shortly before that time, and I'm looking forward to the next phase of my life.

Welcome to the class Stinky! That's a nice accomplishment - 40 years with your employer :!: Hope it was a nice working relationship, and now you can look forward to a nice, well-earned retirement. You know, 40 years is probably twice as long as you lived with your parents growing up

Congratulations on grandchild #5! But we already know what the next phase of your life will look like - babysitting grandkids, feeding grandkids, taking grandkids to park, napping with grandkids, carpooling grandkids, taking pix of grandkids, and with luck, celebrating grandkids' graduations and weddings and gadzooks! great-grandkids :D

Thanks Miriam!

My last day was June 1st so I suppose I’m now in the ranks of the retired. Deleting my daily alarms felt like a rite of passage. But overall, it still feels more like a staycation right now but I imagine that will change over time. Heading to a wellness spa tomorrow to get serious about relaxing!

Cheers to this forum for helping me get here and best of luck to those still on your journey to wherever you want to be.

Congratulations on joining the Ranks of Retired!
Yes, isn't this a great forum - we even learn how to catch mice in the attic, cook oatmeal with Dr. Pepper, and how to whiten our teeth :D

How nice! Let us know how your journey goes :beer

Oh is this a great Retirement Literacy Tutorial!

David Jay has 3 terrific retirement planning threads - he really has his act together 8-)

Bogleheads retiring in the next two years might want to read these threads as helpful roadmaps for the Retirement Adventure.

Retirement Plan Review Please
Two Years to Retirement-Please Review and comment (1 Year update)
Roth conversions after start of SS benefits for low expense couples92018 version)

Thank you David Jay for your Retirement Literacy Tutorial and these very helpful threads :D

It really is a wonderful tutorial. The way he stepped along, asked questions, clarified, and showed the full picture. Oh, and what I had to pay attention to: taxes! It was an amazing experience to sit at home and receive this help.
It is also broad enough to apply to others. I was more than surprised to see that there was a way to move tIRA or 401k money to roth and not pay taxes.
It is bookmarked and I go back to it and use it to work on my own document and list to refer to when trying to make plan.
I find myself wanting to retire and nervous about it too.

On the fence with one more year syndrome. Have over 25x expense and a good plan but still learning. Trying to see tax srategy Roth conversion and the like. Found the forum 6 months ago and huge help. 56 now DW 50 . health care expense biggest concern. Too many what ifs.. hopefully will get the courage to pull the trigger. Becoming a first time Grand dad next week might do it. Wish me luck. Much thanks.

Tick Tock, baby! I have 8 working days left. Just said goodbye to a bunch of statewide colleagues. Those folks are the source of great joy & support and have been for 35 years. Replacement starts Monday so we will have a week+ to either enjoy or irritate each other. Hoping for the 1st option but have enough PTO that if the 2nd arises I can make myself scarce.

Ok, twhite5262, we'll keep you on the back burner and you can let us know what happens when being a First Time Grand Dad comes next week :happy

As for the One-More-Year-Syndrome, look at these threads for some ideas
