HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY BOGLEHEADS FORUM

Post by Mel Lindauer »

Hello Everyone:

Feb. 19, 2017 is a very special day. It marks the 10th birthday of this Bogleheads.org forum.

Born out of frustration over the lack of moderation at our previous home, this moderated Bogleheads.org forum has been a remarkable success. Over the past 10 years, we've had over 3,000,000 posts on more than 200,000 topics. We now have nearly 57,000 members and about 10 times that number of guests (affectionately known as "lurkers"). Our viewer numbers are off the charts. We get more than 70,000 unique visitors per day from all around the world. The forum averages around 4,000,000 hits per day.

Our Community's wiki is the repository of a wealth of investing information, contributed by nearly 250 Boglehead editors who want to help other investors gain financial literacy. There are currently more than 900 pages of content covering a multitude of investing topics such as asset allocation, taxes, rebalancing, and a host of other important subjects, all written and kept updated by those Boglehead editors. Our wiki editors continue to add additional important information on an ongoing basis. The wiki averages about 25,000 visits per day, but there have been days when that number approached 35,000.

The Bogleheads message has been expanded even further by the publication of two Bogleheads books -- The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing and The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement Planning. We have a number of published investment authors who freely contribute their knowledge to the forum on a somewhat regular basis. Even Vanguard founder, Jack Bogle, posts here from time to time.

We have established 70 Bogleheads Local Chapters, including three foreign Chapters (UAE/Dubai, Paris and Taiwan). These Local Chapters hold regular meetings that spread the Bogleheads investing philosophy and help investors at the local level.

While all of this is certainly impressive, what really makes this Community so very special is the QUALITY of both the help and information offered by so many selfless Bogleheads who want to contribute in any way they can to help this Community help others reach their financial goals.

Happy 10th birthday, Bogleheads.org forum. Thanks to all of the Bogleheads who contribute so much to make this the very best investing site anywhere and who've made this anniversary possible. Special thanks and kudos to forum owners Larry Auton and Alex Frakt who've kept this forum ad-free through their personal generosity. Onward to our next anniversary!

Best regards to all.

I do remember the heady early days--amazing that 10 years have passed already! A big thanks to "Phoenix" who started it all with "A Port in the Storm".

From Phoenix's inaugural post on February 19,2007:
Welcome to a new forum for Vanguard Diehards. This forum's purpose is to enable intelligent online conversation among those who call themselves Bogleheads and who use Vanguard's family of funds.
We are indebted to Alex Frakt and Larry Auton for running this forum and keeping it ad-free. Please support the forum by clicking on the Amazon link or by making a direct contribution.

Much thanks to all the wonderful administrators, moderators and contributors for their selfless work!

Best,
Mud

Bogleheads is the best. Thank you everyone and special thanks to the moderators and those who keep this site running. I'm grateful to have Bogleheads as a resource for teaching my children about investing and personal finance and thankful for what you all have taught me about how to navigate the financial world (and so much more).

Merci! :happy

An amazing group to be a part of! If not for this forum I'd still be in a high cost mutual fund with an advisor that had his best interests at heart.

To my beloved Bogleheads,

Heartiest congratulations on the tenth birthday of the bogleheads.org forum.

What a decade! What a service to investors! Yes, “if you build it, they will come.” And with 4,000,000 hits per day, it’s fair to say that intelligent, self-motivated investors came in droves.

As I wrote in my foreword to The Bogleheads Guide to Investing, your group pays honor to this principle of Alexis de Tocqueville, expressed in his 1840 book Democracy in America:

“[Only by] the intellectual and moral associations of Americans … and the reciprocal influence of men [sic] upon one another are feelings and opinions recruited, the human mind developed, and the heart enlarged.”

It’s particularly poignant that your tenth birthday comes just two days before my twenty-first birthday. This is a great week for celebration!

Mr. Bogle,

We appreciate so much you coming onto the forum to express your feelings and congratulations!

Of course, you laid the foundation for this remarkable forum over 60 years ago when you developed the index fund, began Vanguard, and proceeded to champion your great cause without relent from the rooftops. You are the soul of this wonderful forum and the spirit of its "service to investors."

We learned from the master :D

Jack....
Best Wishes on your upcoming heart transplant anniversary!
Your books, your appearances on financial TV, and this forum have been so very, very influential in my investment decisions.
It just seems so inadequate when I say "Thank You", but I'll say it again... Thank You!
Wishing you many, many more years of Bogleheading!

10 years already? HB, BH :D

If it were not for Bogleheads and Jack Bogle, the Internet would be just a place to shop. Or who knows what other forum we would have got ourselves attached to.

It goes without saying that we have the best financial advice. But I love the way people ask all kinds of questions here.

If we were having a thread on favorite threads, mine would be Cody's "noise in the attic" that was not in the attic at all. It was the right combination of persistence, help and surprise ending that makes a perfect story.

Wow, thanks to everyone who makes this forum possible. It is certainly special to hear from everyone espeically Mr. Bogle, and Taylor and Mel and so many others! Happy 10th anniversary to the forum team. What a successful enterprise! I have always gotten very good advice here when the Boglehead's Guide and Jack's book of Common Sense Investing didn't already answer my questions.

Happy Birthday!

I assume the site is financed purely by donations. And I know that time from the moderators and IT people are donated as well. Is there some dollar amount needed that can be shared so we can tailor our donations? Or like other non profits, a goal be mentioned and progress towards it mentioned on occasion? I would hope all participants donate !!!

I should explain. Jack Bogle's 21st birthday applies to his heart operation. See: Vanguard founder Jack Bogle: 65 years in the investment industry

The rest of him is a bit older. :)

Congratulations on reaching a double digit age. What a long strange trip it's been.

Thank you to those who took on this labor of love and turned it into a REALLY BIG DEAL: tashina at the very start; Mel, Taylor, Alex and Larry in short order; and countless others since.

I check in very rarely these days but it's a pleasure to see the buzz of activity as everyone, out of the goodness of their hearts and with no thought to putting a nickel into their own pockets, provides terrific financial advice to anyone who asks. Kudos to all.

agree. Bogle Heads saved us from two "friends", each at a major house who between them had us in something like an 19 fund portfolio.

+1 It does my old heart good to see de Tocqueville quoted here (or anywhere), especially with Jack's modern nod to the influence of women as well as men. It's amazing how well de Tocqueville understood the collective American mind, doubly amazing how, nearly 300 years later, his insights remain pertinent.

Happy birthday, and thank you to all the people who make this forum possible.

To those who may not know this forum's history, Phoenix started this forum and subsequently handed it over to Larry Auton (mingstar) and Alex Frakt. See: Bon voyage

Also: Subject: [diehards.org/forum] diehards.com/forum (?)
Alex Frakt wrote:To clarify...

When Larry and I started this site in 2001, all it contained was a couple of pages about the bogleheads approach and a better interface to and a search index for the Vanguard Diehards forum on Morningstar.com. When we decided to do the site, I registered both diehards.org and bogleheads.org. We had a mild disagreement about the name, but in the end decided to go with diehards.org as the site name. If anyone happened to type in bogleheads.org, it redirected to diehards.org.

When we started the forum here (or, more accurately, gave a permanent home to the experimental forum that Phoenix had started a couple of weeks previously), the site was still called diehards.org. Originally we listed the posts from both our forum and the Morningstar (M*) Vanguard Diehards forum on our home page. But eventually, as the number of posts decreased on M* and took off here, we dropped the M* listings. At that point, it no longer made sense to use diehards.org as the primary site name, so we switched to bogleheads.org. But I kept the diehards.org registration active, so if you type in any diehards.org URL, you will get the proper page on bogleheads.org.

Happy birthday and many thanks to those that make this forum special. I just checked the history and see that I joined the forum on 2/25/07 and made my first post on 3/13/07. I guess it took me a few days to "catch on."
This sounds like a good occasion to make a donation either directly or by an Amazon purchase (maybe both). anyone else?

All of you--Mel, Taylor, Alex, Larry, Phoenix, and all the administrators-- have done a wonderful service in setting up this site. I am appreciative every time I log in to the the forum or research in the Wiki. There is NO WHERE ELSE a curious investor can obtain such high quality, reliable information. Thank you for donating your time, your energy, and your expertise.

Most of all, thank you Jack Bogle for being their inspiration, for looking out for your fellow man/woman, and for walking the walk on helping the individual investor. You are my hero.

Best,
