My name consists of 2 Old Norse Runes

Othala is the rune for ancestral home, the hearth, and sacred enclosure. Fehu represents our power and possessions gained by own hand, the measure of our earned wealth.

I managed 10+ part-time workers (read: college students) at my last job. I was trying to repair something when one asked, "Can you get me the tool that looks like a dinosaur?" After I quit laughing, I handed over the channel locks, saying, "Here you are, Tyrannosaurus Wrench!" She replied, "I'm not going to live that one down, am I?" "No, T-Wrench is way too good to just let go."

The next time that happens, ask if they want the left-handed or right-handed version. (I couldn't pass that one up. :D )

My first post in over six months. My initials and user name are cfs. Meaning:

c - Name of biblical places in Samaria and Judea
f - Name of a town in the Iberian Peninsula
s - Name of a town in the Iberian Peninsula

All these places have retained their original names after millennia. I plan to visit all of them before the expiration of my birth certificate. Already then, that's all I have to say about my initials and user name. Now closing for good to continue flying low under the forum radar. Thanks for reading ~cfs~

What's the word for something that clearly isn't self-descriptive? That's how to describe mine.

nisiprius wrote:"that Nisi Prius nuisance, who just now is rather rife,

it just popped into my head at a moment when I was trying to think of a screen name that had no particular connection with my real world identity. It's a line from a song in a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, The Mikado, in which a character, Ko-Ko, is making a list of people who could be eliminated and "never would be missed." It's some obscure legal term relating to court procedures in Victorian England. I'm not a lawyer, certainly not a judge. I've done a little bit of Googling and clicking and have concluded that Gilbert and Sullivan connoisseurs have no idea what, or more likely whom, Gilbert was talking about.

Despite the complicated origin of the phrase, "nisi prius" simply means "trial court" or "trial judge" -- a usage still common in New York, strangely enough. (This is one of those phrases that's understood by people familiar with reading legal opinions in historical context, but it seems never to be defined clearly for those who aren't in that group; searching the web didn't turn up anything that matches the fairly clear use of the term among those knowledgeable about legal history.) I think Gilbert & Sullivan were simply impugning a type of unfunny judge who tries too hard, presumably something their audience was familiar with as a matter of background context. Their list of targets in that aria reads sort of the way a "society" humorist today might make fun of particular predictable types of people in high society.

Well, Boston is short for "Botolph's stone." A small city in a land previously referred to as "near the great blue hill," now known as Massachusetts. Dan is for the name given to me by my elders...

Okay, fine, I'm terrible at coming up with usernames. My name is Dan and I'm from Boston.

Tinscale refers to toy trains and accessories that are not made to scale (accurately proportioned). The word "tinscale" comes from the old tin-plate toy trains, which were not made to scale.

Model trains and accessories, by contrast, are authentic replicas of real trains, correctly proportioned right down to the smallest detail.

I joined the forum at a time I was playing with toy trains with my grandson.

That I enjoy steady consistency. Such as:
1. Finishing 4th in the English Premier League
2. Being knocked out in the round of 16 in the Champions League
3. Being teased and tormented by the team I love (I was raised a Red Sox fan, and appreciate the Fever Pitch connection).

Mine is from main character in Star Wars: The Old Republic (wish I'd kept more videos of him). I miss that game. For you WoW players, it sounds like a play on Malygos, but actually it's a blend of Calyx (one of my first WoW characters, a nelf rogue) and the Latin caligo (fog or gloom) with an s tacked on since it sounded better that way.

I lived in Central Africa and was riding my motorcycle with friend when there was a Matatu mini-bus driving super aggressively and tried to run us off the road. I turn to chase him and he got stuck at the next intersection. I was wearing Oakley gloves with polymer knuckles and proceeded to smash his side mirror. So then I became "MatatuPuncher" Also my Hash name.

Named after Psyduck -- a 1st generation water/psychic duck Pokemon whose psychic powers comes from the constant headache it has (it's why it holds its head constantly). Dimwitted-looking in a normal state, it gains tremendous attack power when the headache becomes too severe.

(For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psyduck)

One of my favorite Pokemons (besides Wobbuffet -- a second generation Pokemon) because it reminds me that even the most dimwitted should never be underestimated.

Mine.. Wolfgang Pauli is a tribute to my dog in college. When I was at Cornell in the early '80s my fraternity (bunch of engineering nerds - one of which actually ended up flying space shuttle missions) named our giant german shepard Wolfgang Pauli after the great physicist who created the "Pauli Principle". Everything we subscribed to was subscribed under this name ( a lot of mail was addressed to our dog). So, to this day, most things I sign up for I sign up under Wolfgang Pauli.

<geek> In my transition from engineering to programming, my first big assignment was to augment a Fortran compiler to discover DO loops in source code that could be implemented as a single vector op codes, rather than a set of scalar op codes with test and branch op codes. That process was called "vectorization", so naturally one who enables vectorization must be a "vectorizer". </geek>

Ok....this might not catch on but...............if you could change your USERNAME...or have a subordinate....USERNAME....what would it be?

....for me.......fishing and golf are my favorite hobbies. However......if I could have a subordinate USERNAME it might be......CCABW.......which stands for Chief Cook AND Bottle Washer..........that is what I do.....everyday........ :sharebeer

I retired at age 56...and my lovely wife continues to work full time (she brings home the bacon). Therefore, my responsibilities extend far beyond the fishing and golfing thing. In truth....I only get to do that a few times a month.....most of the time I am .........CCABW

One reason I switched to this user name because doing a google search for "blu-ray" shows too many results to be identifiable.

I had another username on this forum before this name and it included my initials and I noticed that if I googled my username all of my bogleheads.org posts would show up in the results so - if anybody (at work etc) knew my ID they also could find my financial status with a minimum of effort! : )

makes sense to me anyway :?

2ndly, I enjoy flying RC aircraft (don't have a quad copter) and have for some years.
Now that I'm retired I plan to fly my RC planes more often.
My avatar is a photograph of a red tail hawk taken from my little red RC model Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser some years ago.
Apparently the hawk came in to check out my little RC plane  and decided it wasn't editable or a threat and fortunately didn't attack. :D
